I'm probably one of the biggest R&R fans out there, but I have to ask the above question.
With the way the writers are struggling to find good stories for a couple (i.e.: Mondler), would it even be worth it to have them try to write two couples at the same time? Now that I think about it, it could be a huge disaster.
We really want them together--any true "Friends" fan knows that they are the true couple. If not for Ross and Rachel, Chandler and Monica would not have gotten together in the first place. For them to just suddenly decide to date in what happens to be the final episode...am I the only one who would be disappointed?
I think it would have to be more of a teaser all year... kind of like all the episodes that led up to that kiss in the coffee house when they first got together. That was extremely satisfying (for the fans, I mean :-))... so I think if it was a kind of 'she loves him and he loves her, but they don't know the other one loves them'... and they discover it and reunite at the end of the show... Maybe at Chandler and Monica's wedding??? I would be happy with that.
What do you mean by "true" Friends fan? If you hate or don't care for them, you're not a real fan? I actually like them (more than C&M, but not by a large margine), but that seems to be an insult for those who are die-hard C&M fans.
I'd say the only real test of a "true" friends fan is one who tries to make objective evaluations about the show's progress, acknowledge its struggles, and point out that which still enthralls us and draws us to it.
One need neither love nor dislike either couple to qualify.
I'm not insulting them. I'm not taking away anything from Chandler and Monica. But "Friends" was built on the Ross and Rachel romance; it was the first issue the show dealt with.

Thank you, Lewis, for pointing this out.
Wendy, one of the silent but "insulted" C&M fans...and a "true" fan, too!
this ia a little hurtful.. I'm a true friends fan.. it was not my fault that I had not heard of Friends much until season 3.. and then when I really got into it I watched all the old episodes..many many times and loved them a lot.. but season 5 was my favourite I realise that R+R are very important.. but I don;t tknow if I told you guys this,, but way back in early season 3 one of my friends told m that Chandler and Monica were "soo gonna get together" I didn't really believe her.. and I wish I did
well.......the thing was they were sort of meant to be too !!! and they are a true testiment to "no matter how disastrous your lovelife.. you may very easily find someone.. and they may actually be a lot closer than you think"
I think that maybe people are taking this "true" fan thing the wrong way. Maybe I'm wrong, but my interpretation of it was that someone who has seen all or most of the episodes and understands it's history, no matter if their a fan of R&R or not, realize that their storyline was the dramatic focus of the early seasons and was used to hook many people into the show. The storyline was established in the very first episode with R&R both essentially starting their lives over after failed relationships. People who understand the show realize that this storyline needs to be resolved for the sake of the fans who were drawn to the show through their relationship. Any resolution to this show would be incomplete without a resolution to this storyline.
As for the "true" couple thing, I think it's another case of using the wrong words and hopefully being misunderstood. My take on it is that as far as main stream(media and casual viewers) thinking goes, R&R will always be thought of before C&M. You see it when shows like Spin City make mention of R&R when discussing one of their couples. It's just the way it is. I presume it's because they were first and there was so much hype about them at the time. It would be next to impossible for any couple to match that type of hype and be thought of in the same way. Of course avid fans realize that C&M have had a longer relationship that has advanced farther, but I don't think it's been enough to overthrow R&R in main stream thinking. It's like if you ask kids which baseball team is best, the Chicago Cubs or the Texas Rangers, most kids would probably pick Chicago even though the more successful team is Texas. Chicago gets more attention from the media.
Rock's was pretty short, but I believe Kane lost the belt to Austin the night after winning it and Mankind lost it to HHH the night after winning it at Summerslam. I'm sure there are others also, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
Yes this is how I feel about R&R. I Feel their relationship is very important *although you might not see this in most of my posts* I was in suspense week after week about their relationship for 2 years. I vividly remember it. Ross's crush, Rachel finds out, Ross finds out, they get together, they break up, get together, and then big break up..and now. They are in the wish wash.
They've used their relationship as the main focus of the show for many many seasons, and as the main cliff hanger for most of the seasons also.
Yea, also, R&R's *relationship* has been showed throughout all the seasons of the show CLEARLY, and spoken about the most. Even though their actual relatinship isn't as long, the hype and before and after the relationshps stories about *their relationship* have been going on for much longer then C&M.
You see it when shows like Spin City make mention of R&R when
and still is, when they got married at the end of last season.. When Ross said Rachel.
I didn't mean to isolate anyone when I said that a "true" fan...I don't even remember exactly what it was. I know that we all have different opinions on best couple (me, R&R), best episode (me, "TOW Everybody Finds Out"), best season (5), and worst season (6). We all argue over if Chandler and Monica took up too much of this past season.
But you need to agree that the ORIGINAL couple from "Friends" is R&R. Like J. Robinson said, their storyline needs to be resolved, and I'm fearful of whether or not it can be done well with the current slump the show is in when it comes to writing for a couple--or the show as a whole.
If I offended anyone, I'm sorry. I did not use the correct words and don't mean to start yet ANOTHER couple war.
this is all true.. R+R are the classic and most outstanding on-off relationships the longing tension to be someone .. and not knowing that the other really likes you anyway.. or they don;t know you do.. (or something like that *lol*)
but I think that the C+M relationship.. so completely different stands out in a different .. the sudden.. overnight relationship between two close friends..... I know some people who refer to best friends getting together suddenly as C+M-ish.... the idea of two people looking all over the place.. hopeless in love and relationships and finding their perfect partner is just accross the hall.. one of their best friends.. for me.. that's special... although Ross and Rachel have a totally special kind of chemistry
is it wrong to like both but have a preference?? I don;t think so... let's not have another couple war.. varied opinions are always brilliant.. but not heated arguments .. :)
now Chan and Mon have the best.. but before they had many disastrous relationships. Ross had been married 7 years.. ....but you know I think they all had bad luck in relationships.. even Joey.. which is suprising cos he ends all of his.. but a couple of times he was really in love and it didn;t work out >. :(
It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
Monica and Chandler both had 2 relationships with people they truly cared about before finding each other.
Ross has had three and the have all ended a *lot* worse than any of C&M's previous relationships. He has been through hell in all of his major break ups, Carol damaged him for life, Emily turned him into mental Gellar and the Rachel thing isn't even finished yet. Phoebe has had a total of one long term relationship and she married a (presumed) gay ice dancer whom she was in love with, then she divorced him so he could marry another woman. (ouch, that's *got* to hurt) Joey may have already dumped the woman he was meant to be with in favor of another girlfriend of the bi-week. He really should have moved to LA with Kate and pursued his acting career in a place likely to give him a job based on his looks.
I knew that they were going to get together at the end of season 2. My mom was talking about my friends *dedication* and we were talking about how we've been watching the show since the pilot. I had forgotten but Iwas a huge fan of the show during season 3 especially I even have a friends T-shirt and that's when I got the friends cassette tape.. I actually remember that rather clearly now that I think about it. My friend and I were both really into the show and I was in 7th grade.
I actually thought they were going to get together on TO at the beach. and had some inclining that they were going to get together during season 2.
Yeah, right! I say, any true "Friends" fan knows that there is no true couple, it all depends on people's opinions. I'm not trying to start a couple war here, so don't even bother flaming me. I just had to let that opinion of mine be heard. And to answer the former question, yes, I do really want R&R together, because they're very different from C&M and would be written in a very different way as well. But if their reunion means the end of C&M, then no.

couple,
me. I

A good point to having both C&M and R&R as couples at the same time is that we might get some storylines not involving them as couples. When R&R first got together, a suprising amount of episodes *didn't* revolve around them as a couple. We could get more Chandler & Joey stories, first of all. We also might get to see long-term stories for Phoebe and Joey. On the other hand, when you take what's been spoken here previously, a real problem with getting R&R back together *before* the final episode is that you will then have to have at least a few episodes involving them as a couple together, which (according to MNL) was the problem that led to the breakup in the first place. (Which I'm a little hazy on: from the pilot episode R&R were designed as characters who eventually get together, and once it happens they simply aren't interesting together? What's up with that?)
I'm a true Friends fan, and I don't! I think they're wonderful when they're arguing together or Rachel is putting Ross in his place. But as a romantic couple I cringe. While I think Monica and Chandler are perfect together. Each to their own.
I really think "Frasier" is a different universe altogether. "Frasier"'s writers are...let's face it...better. They've been able to pull off Niles secretly loving Daphne for 7 years. The "Friends" writers were only able to do it for a year. And they've stretched it out further than the elastic from Roseanne's underwear will go. It has not been done tastefully (actually, the list and Chloe were well-done, but the letter, Emily, and the Vegas marriage...well, weren't). And now that they can't even write for Chandler and Monica well, it's not possible for them to write for another couple that pairs two of the four other main characters.
Sure, they did it...but not all that well, IMO. I pretty much got tired of the show making Daphne so incredibly clueless over Niles' affections (and everything else about the show, frankly). I also didn't quite understand the connection, as I did with Ross and Rachel, who were (and are) better friends than Niles and Daphne, who I see merely as cordial acquaintances. Now, I haven't watched the show in over a year, so maybe things changed drastically, but I have Charmed to occupy my time at 9 Thursday.
Kinda like how Rachel, or any other memeber of the gang really realizing what a huge crush Gunther has on her. I swear one of the funniest moments on the show was when Rachel made the comment about finishing the crossword and having no one to hug, followed by Gunther rushing to reach her and then falling on his face w/ out her even seeing her..Poor guy lol.
I think with Chandler and Monica happyliy engaged, that should bring Ross and Rachel closer together. Who knows, Courtney Cox-Arquette could get pregnant while the show's on summer break, and the writers could write in the pregancy as Chandler's responsible for getting Monica pregnant, that way, they could speed up the wedding wait from May 01' , to either November 00' or Feb. 01'. The sooner the better.

Yeah, you know, I always thought that Rachel and Gunther should hook up. Free coffee for Rachel for life, and Gunther would have the woman of his dreams!

they could really have fun writing just one episode where Rachel and Gunther go out.. no.. it would just be hilarious.. and we would get to know more abot dear old Gunther Centralperk *lol* of course.. not serious.. just as a joke episode.. *lol*
I know! Some guy at work is bugging Rachel to go out with him (maybe a superior??), but he has some annoying habit so she doesn't like him... and they have some office dinner or benefit or something... and all her "friends" are busy, so none can take her, but she doesn't want to go alone because he'll bug her all evening... and Gunther overhears the conversation and offers to go... so she agrees!
Well, they need to do *something.* Aniston and Schwimmer do their best work together, and we need to see Ross do something besides mope and whine. A big long tease, ala this season's Frasier, where they mutually decide not to date and keep indicating accidentally that they are unhappy with this idea, would suit me better than the Big Splash Then Ignore Them For Six Months that we are seeing now.
I think the key thing to look at when answering this question is that Schwimmer and Aniston do their best work together. They've got the kind of screen chemistry that is very rare. If your theory is to put people in situations where they have the best chance at doing well, you'd put them in an ongoing storyline that would ultimately lead to a reunion. It's gotten to the point where storylines where they are not together aren't taken that seriously. Everyone realizes that R&R's main storyline in this show is their relationship with each other. The writers would be smart to just stop trying to ignore it at some point. It gets a bit absurd when in one episode Ross practically admits he's still in love with Rachel and then a couple weeks later his feelings have vanished. Just buckle down and put the time and effort into creating a storyline that lasts the majority of the season and resolves this relationship.
well.. Mike.. I don;t know.. I'm not an R+R fan.. but they were, are and always will be a major hook of the whole show... I think the classiest and least-tacky way of putting them together is for them to realise near the end of the series.. that they didn;t find anyone better.. and they were really great together.. and they should have another go at it to overdwell the storyline would be a slight on them as a couple
of course I accept my bias as always loving C+M.. and getting the better ride but I resent the word "mondler" no matter how appropriate people think it is
sure Raphael.. whatever way they do. they need it to be very well written.. they don't want to make too much fuss about it.. but it would be a major event
although I presonally don;t mind when they do.. although I have a feeling they will definately get back together sometime...
my one true love of Friends comes from C+M.. and although everyone is extremely justified in their opinion on saying they are boring.. I'm a romantic person and a comic person.. so I guess either way I am pleased :)
but don;t worry.. I do believe R+R will be back.. come on there were soo many hints that both still have feelings
the "wierd for me" for both of them.,. when it came to Jill and Paul... that's gotta be a sign.. of things to come...
So do I, there are only 1 or 2 episodes where I have actually seen "mondler". Many people get mondler confused with C&M being a couple ..being 2 completly different characters.
No, they aren't confused. The term is taking on a new meaning. Whereas before it meant a scene in which both behave alike, it is becoming shorthand for the degree to which Chandler and Monica have completely taken over and dominated. They are more than just characters - they have become a phenomenon.
Chandler was *so* in the wrong story, wasn't he? If I was a writer on the show, he'd have tried to teach Joey a lesson about friendship while secretly obtaining a replacement fridge without Joey suspecting.
Actually, my wishy-washyness has nothing to do with the difficulties of writing for two couples at the same time. These writers seem to have trouble writing for one couple at a time.
No, my dilemma is between the idea of them getting back together versus the virtue of letting sleeping dogs lie. The last thing I want to see is some contrived story arc where they end up together again because of some ridiculous plot twist.
Yes, I WANT ROSS AND RACHEL BACK TOGETHER! No anullment, no divorce, no more bullshit. Just good quality entertaiment. No more Ross and Rachel dating other people, just each other.
