They did the same thing with thanksgiving, the holiday episode a week early, then a re-run. Is this something to do with not conflicting with sports? Or a rating tactic?

IMO, it's a rating tactic. Generally, the ratings for holiday are lower than usual, so it's better for a network to air the show after holidays.

It's about the rating IMO. I think They (the guys at NBC and not the freaky alien life forms observing us from outer space) belive that during the holidays less people would break their celebrations just to watch some TV and don't know if that's true but during Thanksgiving, it might be also about colliding with the Parade show or the NFL game that the guys on friends also watch.
