I'm just curious. The Gellers are at least half Jewish. Rachel's mother is played by Marlo Thomas (she's Jewish, if I'm not mistaken). And in "The One With The Race Car Bed," Dr. Green says he wants to say hello to the Levines--a Jewish surname.
It might be that the Greens just have a lot of Jewish friends...but do you think that Rachel is Jewish?
I'm not judging or anything, by the way. Just curious.

Since we have four of them figured out (Joey is Roman Catholic), are Phoebe and Chandler both Catholic, too? Or do you think they're Presbyterian? Or what? :)
I don't think Phoebe is a part of any religion. I guess if I had to guess, I would say her ideas are close to buddism or maybe wiccan. Phoebe's definitely spiritual, just not very religous.
Chandler, I have no idea about, I would guess he was protestant, but not practicing. Joey sure isn't following his Catholic beliefs.

Yes, I pretty much agree with you. (The Catholic joke is a jibe at my own family and the "Chandler" I know in real life, who is the product of a Catholic "prep" school ("public" school in the UK).) Chandler is unlikely to have been particularly active in *any* religion at home from the age of 9, but might well have found a religiously-slanted school upbringing (chapel, etc) quite comforting in his teens.

But I think that's how it's meant to be: Kauffman & Crane devised their characters to come from a mix of ethnic backgrounds, none of which were particularly strong-going, so that they would all get along. Britain is a much less religious country than the USA is, so the secular atmosphere of Friends makes it more popular here than some other American sitcoms.

Well, Chandler protested about him not being Jewish and yet Monica didnt', I think if htey wanted to get it right then Monica would have said that she wasn't Jewish also. I wonder if the issue of religion will ever come up in their relationship. Although neither one seem to be actively practicing religion. (I who only goes to church 2 times of year)
