"Friends" has been a rip off of "Seinfeld" for years.

Just watch how much of the humor on Friends is "Seinfeld-esque"..it's bizarre that people think that "Friends" is an original show when the material has been crafted to resemble Seinfeld to the tee. Talk about taking advantage of another show's success.

i totally disagree the humor on seinfeld was bitter and angry friends is perhaps the most amiable and joyful show on tv since the andy griffith show

Meanwhile, as far as American sitcoms are concerned, "Friends" is hugely popular, "Frasier" trails well behind in second place, third is "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" (sadly relegated to children's TV), and then nothing.

IMHO, this is completely untrue. Don't get me wrong. I love Seinfeld. This show always made me crack up. But it's different. The show Seinfeld has a very own kind of humor, which always has a kinda sarcastic/ironic tone. Friends on the other side is much more harmless, and does contain much more 'physical humor' (well except for Kramer who always used to storm into Jerry's apartment) Of course Seinfeld, Elaine, George and Kramer were a cool gang. But the show rarely had something to do with their friendship itself. George buying cheap envelopes for wedding invitation, which causes his fiancee to die: That's Seinfeld. - Joey saying: "How you doin'?" or Ross depressively whining: "Hi": That's Friends. Of course there are jokes, that might work for both shows, but then again, those would work in any other sitcom as well.

I'd say, humorwise, Friends is somewhere between "Mad about you" and "Seinfeld"...

I can't see what you mean, if you're talking about the kind of humour, but the whole Seinfeld-consept was to make shows around trivialities, suchs as toup�s, manouvres and similar - things that stand-up comedians talk about all the time. Friends has had some shows with the same settings, but calling it a rip-off is far off. Besides, Jerry Seinfeld is/was the worst actor ever - EVER - to act in a sitcom...

You are so right - and I've watched fair few Seinfelds, hoping to hear Maggie Wheeler talk in her normal voice. The show is fairly well made & acted, and individual scenes are usually well written. Unfortunately the four main characters are *unbearable*, and the plotting is nearly always dreadfully contrived to make the various storylines loop upon themselves and cross-connect with each other.

I often enjoyed Jerry doing his stand-up in the teasers & tags however, for he is a much better comedian than he is an actor. And here I think we have a key to a major difference between the two shows. In "Seinfeld" most of the stories are dramatised stand-up routines, but "Friends" is rather more character driven with soapish continuities.

The only episode I've really watched is the one in which CC guest- starred - big surprise! :)

Yeah, and she was sadly under-used. The only episodes I somewhat enjoy are those where a secondary character is even worse so they don't seem so bad, such as the "Soup Nazi" (which was a good idea), but even then the plot was (typically) resolved in a way which I did not like. Fans of "Seinfeld" *would* like that, and I'm happy for them, but my point is that this demonstrates how different the show is from "Friends".
