Hi all,

I was watching a couple of back episodes over the weekend on tape - random series, random episodes, & it occurred to me... They suckered us all...

While everyone's going for the big Ross & Rachel thing in the background there was always a thing going on with Chandler & Monica.

It's for the most part in almost every episode. There's a touch or a hug, or a comment or a straight line, but there's always something.

Here's my 2 cents worth: I reckon when they planned the series that they had always planned on C&M getting together, after all, they offered MP the role after they turned down his "Maxwell's House" script. CC was offered the role of Monica after she tested for Rachel & she was the biggest named cast member to join. The series is set in Monica's apartment & Chandler lives "Across The Hall" which was one of the original names for the series.

I think the whole R&R thing just got out of control & they killed it off as soon as they could. After all, what got the biggest cheer - Ross Kissing Rachel for the first time or Monica ending up in bed with Chandler in London... I read the script of that episode months before I saw it & still Couldn't believe it when I saw it...

Anywhoo... that's my 2 cents - what does anybody else think ?

I think it has been stated as a blunt fact on this newsgroup that the very first person they wanted to pair Monica with was Joey. They had changed their minds by the end of the second season, and the Age of Chandler began to be a serious idea, but your theory that Chandler and Monica were meant to be together from the start is dead wrong. At one point in the planning process, they considered making Chandler gay.

As for who got the biggest cheer - oh, man, don't EVEN go there. The successful take of the first Ross and Rachel kiss was performed after the audience had left. Monica, obviously, popped up in front of a live audience. And if you are trying to say that that everybody loves Chandler and Monica and nobody cares about Ross and Rachel, let me just state, mildly, that both couples have serious detractors and rabid fans. I am not sure what you mean about Ross and Rachel getting "out of control." You may argue that it had run its course and was risking getting dull (as is the case with Chandler and Monica now) and I'd say the comment had merit. The only thing that's ever been out of control about Ross and Rachel is the degree to which the will they/won't they phase they are now in has annoyed millions of viewers.

Not trying to say anything of the sort, I agree that this subject is past it's prime (on both couples), but I think the pairing of C&M has a stronger basis as they have been living together & have known each other for so long. R&R never even lived together, (I was actually very pro R&R before the writers messed it up)

What I mean by it is the fact that the personalities of the characters became greater than the personalities of the actors. (even this weekend I saw a trailer for "Three to Tango" starring "Matthew Perry from the worldwide smash-hit tv comedy Friends", I'm paraphrasing a bit, but these actors are in danger of becoming only known for their characters (& to be honest MP did seem just like Chandler on the big screen, but they probably just cut the trailer that way).

I agree in full with this statement. Please don't get me wrong here I'm an avid friends fan, even went to LA just to see the show (8,000 trip), I just think that the characters played by MP & CC have evolved as the ones most possible to survive a relationship (if that's the right phrase). Wether that was an accidental working of the writers or not. I also firmly believe that the show went drastically downhill when Jesse started - did they pull the best writers from friends to work on this ?

Well, we know they'd changed their minds by the end of the second season, but all we really know is that it was in their original vision of the program. Who knows what made them change their minds?

Yes. What I'm telling you is a fact verified by Friends insiders, not my personal opinion. This *did* happen. By the time they wrote TOW the Flashback in season three, they had already changed their mind and decided to have it be Chandler instead.

Again, what I'm saying is a verified fact, not speculation. By the time the pilot debuted, they had decided against that direction, but they did bandy it around for awhile. What we finally see on the screen often bears little resemblance to what was considered in the early stages.

That's an entirely different matter. Saying that you think Chandler and Monica work better than R&R is a valid opinion, and I understand why some people feel that way. This is *entirely* different from saying that the writers meant to put C&M together from the beginning (they didn't) and that C&M got a bigger cheer than R&R did. (Apples and oranges.)

Oh, there's a serious problem with this, but Ross and Rachel didn't cause it. Every successful sitcom actor has this problem. Notice how little the cast of Seinfeld works these days? And the writers didn't break up R&R because the actors were typecast. They broke up R&R because they had run out of ideas for them as a couple.

Oh, well, I won't argue with you there. I think C&M have a pretty sick and dysfunctional relationship right now, but that's because of bad writing and very poor *recent* characterization for Monica - not because it *had* to be that way. This is a good idea, poorly executed.

This is the writer's fault. Monica was *not* this bad before she started dating Chandler. And this is not only my opinion. Somebody recently posted URL for a television review which depicted Monica, writing in her diary, discussing how she decided to be a one-dimensional person who tells Chandler everything he wants. Monica As Perfectionist has always been here, but Monica as Emasculating Bitch is new. Bad writing.

Goodman wrote for Friends in Spring 98, and VC in Autumns 98 & 99.

Bilsing/Plummer/Boyle *began* on VC then transferred to Friends.

Astrof/Sikowitz left Friends after Winter 96, and a few years later they wrote some VC episodes in Autumn 99.

Only Kunerth & Goodman could be said to have been pulled for VC, but were the some of the best writers on Friends? They wrote...

You can't compare the two things. Everyone was waiting for R&R to get together, some of us couldn't believe it took so long, and in fact one *might* argue that there were four 'first kisses' (105/124/207/214) ;)

On the other hand, Monica coming up for air in Chandler's bed was a total surprise, and IMHO it was far better to learn about it AND actually see it at the same instant. One of the greatest moments ever in Friends.

The theory that I most agree with is that the producers felt that R&R worked better as two people than as a couple, but they came to regret splitting them up so they resolved never to do this to C&M. However I am not adamant in this as I haven't heard from Marta Kauffman herself.

Britain has only seen up to episode 617, so if R&R have been reunited or C&M have broken up, please don't write in to say so. Don't even post with a spoiler space because that alone would signal this has happened.

The main reason you can't compare the two is a technicality - according to JA and DS, the audience's reaction to Ross and Rachel's first kiss was such that it was impossible to film a successful take in front of the audience. I have quotes. :) You can't compare the two because they were filmed differently, and to try to do so would be just insane.

Exactly, but the point is anyone who wants to avoid spoilers WILL NOT be able to avoid them unless they give the NGs a wide berth for at least a week or so before the finale, and in Tennant's case probably at least a week after, if not a couple. The risk for spoilers at finale time is just too great - and the absolute worst thing that can happen is when you've avoided spoilers for so long, and then right before you're going to see it, someone lets slip. People will put it in the subject line without thinking, put it in the subject line *while* thinking, put it without spoiler space, etc. It's just unavoidable.

I'm serious here, you will *not* be able to avoid it, regardless of however many warnings we give you - I can guarantee that someone will put spoilers in the subject lines and structure it so that every person will see it whether they want to or not. If you want to avoid the spoilers, the only foolproof way you're going to be able to is by leaving the group at least a day before the episode airs.

The exact same thing happened to me, except it was a lot earlier on in its cinema lifetime and it got spoiled by Donna Air, the eternally annoying but thankfully now ex-Select MTV presenter.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch features a movie reviewer by the name of Joe Pollack. Every single one of his reviews is a complete plot spoiler. Hence, many of us don't even bother reading his reviews.

The reviews on my movie page are not spoilers at all. They are in the movie section in new movies of my domain. Check it out.

The South Park movie also needs to be seen cold, as it were, I think - I saw it in the cinema the day I got my GCSE results (and hence without anyone telling me it was fantastic beforehand) and loved it, but the second time I saw it I was kinda like, "Okay, I laughed so much at this movie *why*?!" I still thought it was funny, of course, just not as funny as the first time around. It's the kind of movie where the jokes get old if you've seen them more than once, unfortunately. :(

Tennant, let me echo her. The finale is a pretty big deal. People will be putting the subject in their headers. Consider that certain.

What you (Tennant) should do, is perform a search for the words finale, Spoiler, Spoiler, Spoiler and Spoiler. Technically the 4 instances of spoiler would be replaced by words relating to the finale, but then it occured to me that you may or may not know about Spoiler, spoiler, spoiler or spoiler at this stage, so actually this is a terrible idea. Forget about it.

I have to agree, also. I'm not sure at what point they start getting closer, but certainly by the S3 finale where Chandler tries to make Monica go out with him (or something like that! My memory is a little rusty!). However, I remember the last time I watched S3 that there were signs then that C&M might happen!

I quite agree. Excellent moment, but about 70% of that is *surprise* because no one saw it coming.... (well, not like that anyway!) :)

Actually Britain has only seen up to the end of S5 - where there is some suggestion that R&R may have got back together. Remember, if it's a cross post to UMTF you need spoiler space for the *entire* of S6!!!

This is where you start to go wrong. They orginally thought of pairing Monica and Joey up..and were thinking of having Chandler be gay.

It was equal shock for me. I dont think that it got out of control, but got the way they wanted it to. They didnt kill it as soon as they could, it started from day one and is still going now.. We will never hear the end of R&R not that that is a good and bad thing. But many things have happened between them.

One more quick comment..-look out for the wrath of claire & Tina & and many other R&R fans...
