Spin-off?

It seems to me that if all six cast members cannot be talked into a ninth season, the network's next likely step would be to try to negotiate a spin-off series for one or more of the stars. Most spin-offs fail miserably, but there are exceptions, such as "Frasier." Of course, it would depend on which actor(s), if any, would be willing to do it.

Has anyone given any thought to possible spin-offs? I could easily see a show built around Ross as a teacher and single dad, and I suspect that David Schwimmer could carry such a show. (Of course there could always be guest appearances by some of the others.)

Another possibility is a show with Chandler and Monica raising a family, although it doesn't sound like a very appealing idea to me. (ANOTHER sitcom about young parents? Zzzz.) At least a show about a single dad would be a little refreshing.

It's hard to imagine a show built around Phoebe and/or Joey, because their characters (IMHO) aren't especially complex.

I also don't know about a Rachel spinoff, although if Marlo Thomas would co-star, a show about Rachel and her mother might be interesting.

What do people here think? I know a spin-off will probably sound horrifying to some, but think of it from the network's point of view -- they'd be crazy not to try it, if one or more of the actors were willing. And a starring role might be more appealing to one of the actors than a ninth season as part of an ensemble of six.

I think a spin-off won't be bad idea to try. If they don't have any fresh ideas for friends, of if a star doesn't want to do it, it's better to finish it off at the 8th season with a good ending (although im one of the few that would still love to see the show continue and feel it still hasn't gone bad, maybe not as good as before, but i still think it's great).

But I don't think a spin-off would do that well. I'll still watch it, but I would much rather have it for all the cast. They could try it for a year and see the ratings, but it would be much memorable without a spinoff.

So the most logical Friends spin-off would not deal with any of the Friends. It would be, a show about Gunther.

Although I can't help thinking Monica's Restaurant would be interesting. Or Phoebe. But you'd have to dump too much of the characters' history (eg, the marriage to Chandler).

i think that a friends spinoff would be cool. but i think the person to base it on should be phoebe. you hear so much in reference to her former life& upbringing , that it would be very interesting to see a show about that in itself. of course all the other friends would have to have regular apperances on the show.

A spin with Ross being a single dad , hmmm.. where have I heard that one before...uh, FULL HOUSE, he does resemble Bob Saget, and then Chandler and Monica can live with him and help him take care of his Kids...

I agree that DS's character could provide enough material to go with in a spin-off series. The other characters are funny in their own right but there is nothing particularly interesting or deep about them enough to work with on their own show. Mmm, sounds like it's got interesting possibilities...
