The use of drama in comedy has actually been quite common with other sitcoms in the past. Take "All in the Family". They occasionally had some very serious issues. "Mad About You" is another one. There are many others, too. I even remember a bit of drama in some episodes of "The Honeymooners".

Some of the suggested explanations of the pregnancy around here in this group are real soap opera, that's for sure-such as the baby being Chandler's, etc. It depends how it's all handled, I guess!

They can use Rachel's pregnancy for some good storylines in Season 8. She would keep a secret to some of the gang for half the season like Mondler did with their relationship in Season 5 and Ross' divorce to Rachel in Season 6.

The difference is that Monica, Chandler, and the rest know that someone is pregnant. I don't know how she can keep this a secret very long.

Friends has always been partially a "soap opera" (I'm not sure what they call those in the UK.) With most sitcoms, if there is a change during the show (e.g., someone moves out) everything has to be back to normal when the episode ends (e.g., that person moves back in).
Friends is different. It makes you watch week to week because things actually happen. Joey moves out, and he stayed moved out. When he moved back in it made sense. When Joey and Chandler won Monica's apartment, they actually moved in and kept it. When Monica and Rachel got it back, it was hilarious.
I guess what I'm saying is that Friends is more than a mere sitcom/comedy. It is also trying to tell stories of the characters, not just 24 minute independent incidents. Sometimes these stories are funny, sometimes they're sad... but that's life.

It really hasn't dealt with many dramatic issues really, I mean other sitcoms have had much more dramatic stuff happen in it then Friends, I don't want to spoil anyone who didn't watch the season finale of Dharma and Greg, but that was much more serious then this
