I recently rewatched the scene in episode 624 where Chandler proposed to Monica, and I have to say.... why oh why oh why? It was painful to watch, and both the dialogue and acting was embarrassing.
Don't get me wrong... I normally love friends, but this scene could have been so much better. I know a lot of people loved that scene... so don't bite when I ask:

funny i also cringe everytime i watch it. worst- chandler pretending to choke up..ouch. but still, the dancing part at the teaser to "oh my darling you are wonderful tonight" is my favorite moment in all of Friends.

Terrible scene. The single most poorly *acted* scene in the show's history. I thought Chandler's proposal the previous year - a sweet, sincere "It's a four" while looking deep into Monica's eyes was much more effective. I also thought their wedding vows were much better done. I was watching Niles propose to Daphne the other day, and I was struck with how much better that one went, how much less forced and overemotional it seemed, even as Frasier was hustling a small orchestra out of the apartment. Chandler and Monica's proposal failed because the writers tried much too hard to pull our heartstrings, and the dialogue was beyond that pair's skill level to pull off. It was one of the scenes that made me certain Courteney Cox was the weakest link of the cast.

I disagree. I thought his performance in "Fools Rush In" had some superb dramatic moments where he was able to do quite a range. I blame the proposal scene on the writing. I, too, thought the Vegas "it's a four," scene should've been "it."

Ya I think that was pretty bad...but They had to make an episode so they did what they could to make a half hour show. What would you all have done different?

At the very simplest level, I would have said this: "No fake tears, please." And some attempts to insert comedy somewhere, somehow, would have been nice. Anything that made it a little bit more grounded and honest.

They did attempt *comedy* with Monica screaming, "there's a reason why girls don't do this" which wasn't really funny. They should write serious scenes without the forced humour. Or the humour should be provided by other characters/scenes. When Ross and Rachel broke up, we got the other four stuck in the bedroom to provide the comic relief which worked really well.

The vegas scene was better, but the proposal certainly wasn't as bad as it is painted to be. I know the critics seemed to be very impressed.
I however, was a little disappointed, becasue I know for a fact that Courteney Cox can do so much better. Her dramatic acting is usually of a very high standard. I haven't seen enough of MP's work to comment on him.
The proposal wasn't great, but there are plenty of other scenes in Friends that contained acting of the same standard. It wasn't the worst, although it was very badly written. I prefer C&M to R&R, but I am willing to admit that R&R have never had a scene quite as badly written as that one.
CCA is definitely not the weakest link imo. Actually, I don't think there is one. The whole cast is very good. I find Cox to be amongst the most talented of the cast members, along with David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow. All six are very good, but those three are of an even higher class.

I hate to say it because at times he seemed to singlehandedly carry this series on his shoulders, but at the moment Matthew Perry is the weakest link. I think his off-camera problems hurt his on-camera presence. His comic timing hasn't been the same for years. The brunt of the show's raw comedy falls to LeBlanc.
