Would it be so bad....

...if extra characters were added to the cast?

I mean had Ross actually married Emily and she became a cast member? Or if Phoebe found someone and he joined the show as a regular? It seems like it might be a way for these characters to continue to evolve and stay interesting. I'm still single, but most people my age have been married or divorced. Other shows like "One Day at a Time" and "Make Room For Daddy" added spouses. Otherwise we know when a character is going to come onto the show, they're only going to appear for a while, and then disappear. And usually it seems like it's some way of trying to stir up the fire that Ross and Rachel had the first year.

When Emily came along and swept Ross off his feet, I hated her at first. The reason? Because I liked her.

What I mean is, I was a strong R&R fan, and because I liked Emily as a character I found myself liking the R&E relationship, which meant I was betraying R&R. I hated Emily because I couldn't think of a reason why Ross should not be happy with her.

I've mellowed out a bit with R&R now (not that I wouldn't be very happy with them getting back together), so I have started to think how much better it would have been for Ross if it had worked out with him and Emily. I think she would have passed reasonably well as a reg.

BTW I saw an add about a new show about to start here in Oz, which I think comes from the UK. Can't remember what they called it, but it co-stars the actress who played Emily, and seems to be some sort of comedy involving relationships. Does anybody know the program I'm referring to?

Yes, and it was brilliant. Warning, nomad, don't get too emotionally involved with this series, the second series will really upset you, if you loved the first. :) Not because it's bad.... can't say more for spoilers.

But it goes back to the arguments of how you add cast members into this group that has been together for so long. Ross, Monica and Rachel go back to being kids together, Chandler was a college chum, Phoebe was Monica's roommate (across the hall from Chandler) before the series started. The last one added to the group was Joey and he became a roommate and bosom buddy before the series started as well. I don't see how you integrate someone else so easily. Even Emily wasn't that great of a fit (well, she wasn't supposed to be -- there was supposed to be that Emily-Rachel thing going).

In the UK we've just had a rerun of 305 "TOW Frank Jr." where Joey refers to a $5 note as "Mr. Lincoln".

This sort of thing happens fairly often in US sitcoms, and sometimes it's a puzzle to know if it's a few bucks or a lot of money - I know that George Washington is $1, and Andrew Jackson is $20, what are all the others?

Anyone? Please?
