General question about transcribing scripts

When anyone is doing this do you just play it on vcr and write by hearing or from captioning? and what about when it is dl and played on computer? Just curious as to how it is done. ~Mary

Here's what I did--sat down and replayed segments from the VCR over and over until I got it right. To verify the final draft however, I downloaded the ep. and played it on the PC while reading the transcript along with it. In my case, I needed the download because there was a 45 second blank spot in the broadcast (which was, therefore, blank on my VCR copy). Although I also had help from members of the newsgroup who confirmed what I transcribed in that section.

I had thought about setting my cable box to show closed captions and then record them so I could pause at each one. It would have saved hours out of a six-hour task, but alas, I couldn't figure out how to set captioning from the cable box. I think it can only be done on the television set itself. Nevertheless, I was able to use to captioning on my replay of the video to verify the first draft. I changed a few words as a result. The only problem was that when I paused the video, the caption went away and it would take several seconds to catch up when the tape was restarted.

Darryl, I have noticed that with DVD subtitles/CC for movies. The trimming is very slight. I haven't noticed that done with television programs though. I am hearing impaired and rely heavily on CC or subtitles. ~Mary

It's very noticable in the Friends DVD's. I only have 2 DVD's (of episodes 701-708) and the captions are quite different than what is actually said. A lot of lines are cut down, and the slang also. What can I say - it's much less funny to read the captions than to hear what they're actually saying. It's a shame, because English is not my first language so not all the times I understand what they're saying, and the captions don't help either.

On the live broadcast of TOW Rachel's Phone Number the closed captioning was very close, but I did find a couple of places where is was not exact. Nevertheless, it really would have helped if I could have used it to create the first draft.

I can't play it on the VCR because I'm not from the US, I downloaded the episode and play it very slow, repeating parts again and again and restarting my computer a lot of times because it crashes after awhile.
