UK- Monica doing a Ross

Some of you may remember my ill concieved post from last year badmouthing Ross/Schwimmer. Anyway, I still believed that Ross was being badly written etc at the time (check deja.com if you must see me embarass myself...)

However, what has happened to Monica this season? She's gone from being arguably the most stable of the six, with Rachel going from selfish and niave to sophisticated and self assured, Joey going from being two dimensional to becoming probably the funniest of the cast. Chandler's went from being Chandler to, well, skinny, flaky Chandler, back to Chandler again, and Pheobe's stayed pretty much the same - pregnancy and all.

I feel, though, that the biggest changes (and not in a good way...) have been meted out on Ross and Mon. In season one both where pretty stable and normal (sorry for the unimaginative use of adjectives...), even though Ross' marraige had just collapsed, and Monica had zero luck in relationships (AND her credit card was stolen!!). I felt last season Ross had become an embarrasing characture of himself. And this season I don't know what to make of Monica. From the loudness (I KNOW!!!!!) to the obtuse competiveness, I at times feel repelled by who was, IMO, one of the most appealling characters in the show...

Does anyone else see what I mean, and if so, can you offer any reason why the writers would want to turn Monica into, an at times, very annoying nutcase?

According to Larissa, who has inside information and tends to make an annoying amount of sense, they do this stuff because they think people think it's funnier and more interesting this way. It may also be that, for a group of writers who appear to me less talented than the original crew, turning characters who were calm and subtle into caricatures is the easy way to get laughs. Why is Joey still funny? Because his humor relies on him being stupid, to a large extent, and that is easy to write. They don't need to make him annoying as well.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Mark Hunter doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Ratings, ratings, ratings. That's all they really care about these days.

All of the reality-driven reasons for the change in Monica that I can think of have been refuted by Larissa, (CCA's marriage, general health, stopping smoking, retinal surgery), which leaves us with the conclusion that the change is a deliberate one designed to enhance the character.

I don't know about you Mark, but for five seasons she was my favourite character. Now it's as though she's left the show, and the new actress is doing her own interpretation, (like successive Doctor Whos).

Hopefully the change is not CCA's idea, and she'll demand a reversion of her character in the Season 7 contract negotiations.
