JOEY RATINGS PRESENTED BY DAN
WEEK 04
JOEY CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE, DROPPING IN THE RATINGS FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE WEEK AND AGAIN FALLING TO SURVIVOR, WHILE THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE DOMINATES PRIMETIME
September 30, 2004: Fast National Ratings from Nielsen Media Research
The first presidential debate took center stage on Thursday night, preempting the networks' normal programming. However, before the debate, both NBC and CBS stuck with new episodes of their regular shows during the 8:00 hour. Joey was unable to stop the audience losses in its fourth week, hitting a new low again with a 9.0 rating and a 15 share, down from last week's 9.6/16. When the final numbers are released, they are likely to show the episode with just 14 million viewers, well below the least-watched new Friends episode of all time. Survivor: Vanuatu, Islands of Fire continued its undefeated streak, as shown by the preliminary ratings.
- Survivor: Vanuatu, Islands of Fire: 11.2/18
- Joey: 9.0/15
- Will & Grace: 8.9/14
Airing on ten broadcast and cable networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, CSPAN, and Telemundo), coverage of the first presidential debate reached an estimated combined audience of more than 55 million viewers, well above the 46.6 million who tuned into the first debate in 2000. This is great news for John Kerry, who made a clear case for why he would do a much better job leading the country. Polls conducted among undecided voters who watched the debate showed Kerry with a decisive victory. In the ratings, NBC drew the most viewers in both the presidential debate coverage from 9:00 to 10:30 and the post-debate wrap-up from 10:30 to 11:00.
1. Presidential Debate (NBC): 10.2/15 2. Presidential Debate (CBS): 8.9/13 3. Presidential Debate (ABC): 6.6/10 ----- 1. Post-Debate Wrap-Up (NBC): 8.4/12 2. Post-Debate Wrap-Up (ABC): 6.4/10 3. Post-Debate Wrap-Up (CBS): 6.0/9
Overall, NBC averaged a 9.5/15 during primetime, slightly ahead of CBS's second-place 9.1/14. However, in the "commercial" segments of primetime, which does not include the debate itself, CBS kept up its winning streak with a 9.5/15, distancing itself from NBC's 8.8/14. In great news for Joey fans, NBC announced earlier on Thursday that it has picked up the freshman comedy for the remainder of its first season, adding on at least nine additional episodes. Joey will again attempt to increase its audience for the first time next week, when a new episode kicks off NBC's regular lineup of all-new programming.
