TOW ROSS'S DENIAL

An improvement on the first two, I'm glad to say, though still far from a classic.

Like last week, only 2 storylines though better balanced this time.

Firstly, Ross's denial.

Phoebe sets up a campaign to convince Ross that he still loves Rachel.

She asks him how Rachel reacted to lack of annulment, guessing rightly that he'd kept quiet. He claimed she was upset at having to move, and said he'd hugged her, whereupon Phoebe asks if he'd smelled her hair, a sign she insists means he still loves her. Phoebe warns Ross that Rachel isn't in the same place he is, he insists otherwise as 'he ISN'T in love with her'!

Later when he finds a prospective flat for Rachel, she hugs him again, but Phoebe is watching causing him to end the hug prematurely. P. again insists he has more than friendly feelings towards Rachel.

Phoebe then tells Ross not to do anything stupid, advice which falls on deaf ears. He guiltily turns to Phoebe who makes a 'told you so' speech.

Later still, after talking to Joey about Rachel living with him, Phoebe overhears and blurts out 'Yes' to Joey asking Ross 'Is that what you really want' (getting back together with Rachel)?

Secondly, the moving/living arrangements.

At first, Joey offers Rachel Chandler's old room, bur she declines after hearing about 'naked Thursdays'!

Later, Chandler & Monica are discussing what to do with Rachel's old room. Monica wants it to be a guest room, and C. wants a games room, but Monica turns this down flat. This arbitrary rejection causes him to walk out in a snit.

He reassures Joey that they're still moving in together, as Joey has already placed an ad for a roommate : 'Female, non-smoker, non-ugly'!

In Central Park, Ross directs Rachel to a workmates vacant flat, but when that falls through he impulsively suggests she moves in with him!

Rachel is fantastically grateful, though it's clear she's unaware of Ross's feelings.

Meanwhile, Chandler & Monica apologise to each other for their earlier spat, but end up having an even bigger one about whether Chandler should have his barker-lounger in Monica's apartment.

He storms out again, alarming Joey by saying the move is off, as he's already interviewing female room-mates.

Rachel overhears and immediately tells Ross that she needn't move in with him any more. Instantly he charges over to (successfully) reconcile C&M, though hardly for the purest of reasons.

The ever-smitten Gunther then offers Rachel his apartment, but can't answer when Rachel asks him where he's moving to.

Ross then appears and tells Rachel he's got C&M back together, so she can live with him, but she freaks him out when she talks about their dating other people.

He then totally panics, trying to scare C&M away from sharing a flat, but merely prompting Chandler to say to Monica 'It scared me out of living with him'!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments :

Lots of transparent motives in today's show : Joey & roommates, Ross (on various occasions), and Gunther too.

First song from Phoebe for a while.

Ross's mental state is deteriorating even more.

Rachel doesn't currently reciprocate Ross's feelings.

Phoebe's constant nagging got a little tedious.

But that doesn't mean that she doesn't still love him.

Or maybe Phoebe also has feelings for Ross?

Agreed. Without giving away any spoilers, there are some hints later on which suggest that it maybe isn't as one-sided as it appears at the moment.

Doubt it - towards the end, her constant teasing of Ross *because* of his love for Rachel, rather than because she thought him an idiot for not getting the annulment or something that would have made more sense, was just mean. If you had feelings for someone, would you tease them mercilessly because they had feelings for someone else? No, you'd be pretty damn upset, and certainly not in a mood for teasing them - if anything, you'd be the one feeling stupid. But instead of using her knowledge (and occasionally perfect logic) to convince Ross to tell Rachel the truth, or get the annulment, or whatever, she instead chose to tease him mercilessly about loving Rachel. There is also evidence to suggest that Phoebe enjoyed being the only one to know such a secret, which makes it even worse. It's a very mean-spitited thing to do - taunting someone for being an idiot for something they've done is understandable in a way, but taunting them for loving someone is just horrible.

Hmmmmm. (Tennant rereads the above several times, then rewatches 603).

Well first of all, you are quite right, Phoebe definitely *does* enjoy being the only one to know Ross's secret.

Second of all, it seems to me that Phoebe is just trying to be a good friend, giving Ross advice that he doesn't necessarily want to hear - as indeed does Joey towards the end of 603.

But third of all Tina, I trust your thoughts on this, for you wouldn't accuse her of teasing him mercilessly unless you meant it, so is this what happens in 604 onwards??? (If so, don't tell me.)

Many thanks, Tennant

Without giving anything away, Tennant, I'd agree that at times Phoebe was teasing just for the sake of teasing, and wasn't being any better a friend to Rachel than she was to Ross.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Claire Abraham doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Yeah. I may have exaggerated a little with the 'merciless teasing' thing (which coincidentally hasn't shown up on my server yet...?!), but Phoebe *was* just teasing for the sake of teasing at times, not because of his actions, but because he had recently rediscovered his very deep running love for a friend of hers. How does that warrant constant teasing?

Gotta say though, I *loved* Joey in this episode. :)

Whoops! Oh dear! I replied to Claire's message of 22:47 before moving on to this message of 22:56. So not so "merciless" after all, Teens? ;-)

Well never mind Tina, because I do agree Phoebe *is* teasing Ross somewhat, which is not really all that nice of her. And Claire makes the excellent point about her not being a good friend to Rachel. But Phoebe has often complained before that she is always the last one to know a secret, and now she's rather childishly revelling in the situation.

What do you think about the way she was after Ross's elevenses?

He was good, wasn't he? Whatever you think of his priorities, Joey had got himself all organised, while Chandler was endangering the best thing that's ever happened to him for a video game. But would I be right in guessing that you wish that the brunette had said "position", eh Tina? :-))

I said I exaggerated a tad. That doesn't make it any better.

You mean after he offered Rachel his place? Well, there was some room for some friendly teasing *then* - hell, *I* would have teased him about *that*! But instead of teasing him for that, she basically just kept on teasing him about his feelings for Rachel, which I didn't find very fair. I just didn't find her teasing in general very nice, but luckily it was funny enough in other places for keep me from being too grumpy about it.

So long as it kept Elle McbloodyPherson out of the picture, yes! :)

Damn. Newsreader deleted it again, and I didn't notice that the space was just empty carriage return. But hasn't that episode been shown in the UK now?

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Claire Abraham doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Only on Sky (satellite/cable), which means not everyone's seen it. Basically, those with Sky see a new series start in January, those without don't see it until July. Theoretically we *shouldn't* have this problem next season (if there is one), because C4 (the terrestrial channel that shows Friends) has just got back all the rights off Sky, but in practise this won't happen because C4 are probably going to start up their own pay-TV channel to rival Sky One (the channel Friends is shown on on Sky).

On the newsreader problem: try Agent. :) You have to pay $30 to use it, but it's *very* good. Plus, you get to do little quote intros like mine. Plus, anyone who's using anything that's not Outlook Express is very good, in my book. :) (I don't care about the fact that Bill Gates is the spawn of the devil, I just don't like any of Mickey$oft's programs. :))

No, what I meant was the playful way Phoebe bit into Ross's cookie, so he grabbed it back, then she drank from his cup, which he rescued, then she made a lunge for his magazine, which he saved, but it was only a feint, for she triumphantly took the cookie & coffee again, and consumed them!

Some might say there was a whole subtext to this. ;-)

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Tennant Stuart doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Tennant, you're seeing stuff that just isn't there. (Look, us R&R fans do it *all* the time, don't argue with me! :)) Phoebe was winding Ross up about his love for Rachel, like she had been all of the previous episode; there is *no* way she was flirting with him (when Phoebe's *really* flirting, you'll know about it - remember TOW Everyone Finds Out?), and there was nothing in the script to suggest she was either - indeed, given that she *was* teasing him about loving Rachel, it wouldn't have been nearly appropriate for her to be flirting with him there. If Phoebe *had* been flirting with him, it would have been to get the truth out of him about Rachel, but in a different way - as it is, she already *knows* by this point that Rachel is at the very least Ross's weak spot, and that he's still in love with her, whether he's willing to admit it or not. She's not flirting with him at this point; basically all she's doing is pushing his buttons to get a reaction out of him, and she knows that any implication that he still has feelings for Rachel is going to be the thing that immediately gets one. Like I said; teasing just for the sake of teasing.

But if you're going to take that train (trail?) of thought, I could just as easily say that when Rachel said that living with Ross was going to be awkward because they would eventually be dating, she *was* actually thinking along the lines of dating each other, but quickly added the 'I'll have a boyfriend and you'll have a girlfriend...' line when she realised she had just said outright that they *would* be dating again at some point. Otherwise, why did she stop right after saying 'you and I are gonna be dating'? Why not just say 'you and I are gonna be dating other people' right away, sans pause, if that was definitely what she meant? ISTM that she's still figuring that somewhere down the road they'll be 'on' again (TOW The Wedding Dresses).

Ahah! (Smiles) Okaaay, you're getting me on your side... :-)

That really *was* flirting, but perhaps even super-flirting ??? ;-)

Okay Tina, you make an excellent point, and I basically agree with you, that Phoebe was not flirting with Ross like she flirts with other men in her love life, (let alone the exaggeration of Everyone Finds Out), in any attempt to get Ross for herself. But don't you think that her demeanour whilst stealing food from under his nose, would be surprisingly girlish for a woman in her thirties - unless she was being just a *bit* flirtatious?

I accept that you can read Phoebe's mood & motives with great precision, but be warned that many men in Ross's position would get the wrong idea...

I see your trap here (apologies if you didn't intend one) and to be honest I'm inclined to jump into it. Maybe Rachel stopped right after saying 'you and I are gonna be dating' because that's how the script was written, to arrive at the joke - and in the same way I should not read too much into Phoebe girlishly stealing Ross's food, for exactly the same reason.

Do we not all read too much into the show Tina, when all the writers are doing is writing for the moment, with little real regard for the overall direction of the show, while Kauffman & Crane concentrate on their new & less worthy projects?

Sorry Tina, "ISTM" is a new one on me - please?

Oh yes, here we are in complete agreement. Although some people still doubt this point, there is unequivocal evidence that Rachel is still in love with Ross, not least her absolute declaration in 502 "TOW All the Kissing"...

RACHEL: I'm still in love with you, Ross.

(She can't help laughing at how ridiculous she sounds - out of stress?)

ROSS: What? What? Was that a joke? 'Cause it's mean.

RACHEL: (Laughing) I'm so dead serious. I'm totally serious.

Fond regards, Tennant

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Tennant Stuart doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

:)

It was certainly exaggerated flirting. But when she flirts, she *always* seems to go about it in that way, making it almost blatantly obvious that she's flirting. She wasn't doing that here, because she already *knew* Ross still had feelings for Rachel and was just teasing him about that more than anything else. And I think it was even towards the end of TOW Ross Hugs Rachel that her teasing went from friendly teasing to not-so-friendly teasing, to be honest. Friendly teasing is me joking about my mate's drunken antics at a New Year's Eve party whenever a certain song comes on the common room radio; we all generally agree that teasing someone about fancying someone the way Phoebe was teasing Ross about loving Rachel was crossing a line from friendly teasing to not-so-friendly teasing, and that teasing them for *loving* the person is definitely out.

It's Phoebe. Don't forget, she *is* quite different to a lot of other people, so girlish behaviour at her age wouldn't be surprising.

Really? None that I've talked to about it in the last week got that impression. :) I have a group of about 12 very close friends at college, both male and female, and none of them saw Phoebe's antics as flirting of any kind - put it like this; if you thought Phoebe was flirting, I *dread* to think what you would think about me and my friends. :)

Oh, but of course I intended a trap. :)

Yes, that's what I meant - the writers didn't write Rachel's line to be read into like that, but they must have meant for the initial implication to be there because the joke wouldn't have worked otherwise. Just the same as they didn't intend it with the Ross and Phoebe thing earlier. Both can still be interpreted as such, though - but I still reckon my Rachel analysis has stronger ground to stand on than your R&P thing. :P

Exactly my point. <grumble> Another reason why VC and Jesse should be cancelled - they're crap, they need to *die*! Okay, people?! :)

Actually, even last season there was more direction than this year, and my dislike of last season because it lost a lot of its ensemble quality is widely known, so that's a compliment of sorts. (Doesn't mean I like it any more, though. :))

It Seems To Me. There's a whole big list of commonly-used acronyms somewhere, except I can't remember the address (it was that long since I needed it)...

I think the problem is that after that, that was the last we heard of it until the end of the season. We should, fingers crossed, be hearing more of it in the upcoming US episodes, but whether they're going to drop that again after sweeps is another matter. :( I think there is certainly evidence to suggest that at the very least, R&R have a *very* strong friendship which has withstood a hell of a lot of crap, but as we all know, there is also just as much evidence to suggest that they're still in love with one another.

Hey, Tennant, come over to the WB boards. Rachel secretly harbours feelings for Chandler, it's soo obvious. The way she fantisised about having a one night stand with him. The way she stuggled up to him after he tried to help her out with her love life while she knew that there was only one man in her life other than that geeky brother of the bitch that stole him away from her. :) The way she didn't object at the time when he kissed her but objected later so she didn't let her secret desires out.

And in the episode where she dreamed about her & Chandler, she also dreamed about her & Joey, her & Ross, and even Joey & Chandler. Everything else I mentioned only proves that Rachel & Chandler are friends, whilst there's proper evidence that she's still in love with Ross.

Nah Ross was just a warm up for her, she wanted to know if she could date a friend but didn't want to risk exposing her feelings to Chandler. She even set up the whole on-a-break thing and got Chloe to sleep with Ross so she'd have a good excuse to break up. Before that she'd tried to get Chandler to break up with Janice by telling him really bad advice. Then at the beach she saw Chandler attempting to pull Monica, so Rachel got it on briefly with Ross to try and make Chandler jealous. Rachel didn't go to London to stop the wedding she went because she wanted to see if she could use the 'we're in a different country so it doesn't count' excuse on Chandler.

Chandler of course knows about this attraction and attempts to divert Rachel before she reveals her feelings. For example the lesbian experiences question while in the recliner and Joshua coming to pick up Rachel up in his dream sequence.

But you're saying "merciless" is a bit hard on the Phoebe of 603? There's still a long way to go yet for us Brits (though we're catching you up) so I shall keep an eye on the girl to see if she goes too far.

My personal opinion is that Phoebe *thinks* she is being a friend to Ross even if she isn't, but she's being no friend to Rachel at all, and must know it. Whatever happened to "women talk"?

But so far (603) we've seen what Ross, Phoebe & Joey think, but we've been excluded from Rachel's side of the equation.

The way Phoebe can get mean-spirited from time to time has always kind of bugged me. They don't have her do it that often (IMHO) but when they do, it clashes rather drastically with what a sweetheart she usually is. Phoebe liked that Ross trusted her by telling her that he and Rachel were still married, but thought the whole thing was headed for disaster. (No matter what Joey said about knowing C&M's secret relationship, knowing a secret is pretty damn cool.)

Phoebe: Rachel is one of my closest friends. (Pause) Although, being the only one who knows anything about this does makes me feel special. Okay!

Maybe Phoebe figured Ross would rather come clean with Rachel than get teased by her (Phoebe). Ross would either realize and admit he was still in love with Rachel and tell her so, or get so annoyed he would prove he wasn't still in love with her by telling her about the non-existant annulment. Basically, I think Phoebe wanted Ross to take some course of action before things got too out of hand and he did something stupid. Or not do anything at all, which also turned out to be pretty stupid.

She's hiding it well then.

Get out the pool table! :)

Yes perhaps she is, but only because she doesn't know Ross is hiding his feelings from her too, (he should be talking to her, not Phoebe & Joey).

But we know for a fact that in earlier seasons Rachel loved Ross, and hid her feelings well then. Being in love doesn't necessarily mean you must have the other person for yourself - it could be that she just wants the best for him, even if that doesn't involve her. See 519 "TOW Ross Can't Flirt".

And she certainly doesn't want to be married because of drunken stupidity. Don't forget that we have only been allowed to see this story from Ross's point of view, not Rachel's. (As of 603, don't tellme about any further).

Well yes, a lot of people disagree with me (as is their right, and I respect & welcome that) but there are as many little P&R hints as there were little C&M hints for the first three seasons. Many of these were less overt than Chandler propositioning Monica, but there is that pool table to consider...

What all this boils down to Paul, is that the writers have their settled couple, so they're playing their soap-opera plots out on the other four.

Often, even when they were dating! :)

Perhaps if she'd been as open about her feelings as Ross had, he wouldn't have been insecure enough to sleep with Chloe?

[Do we really want to open that can of worms again though?]

At this point in the series she seemed pretty clear to me, and in 401 she wrote an 18 page letter (both sides) about the whole matter - and look what good that did her. No wonder she became reticent later on.

The 18 page letter was about what a jerk she thought he was and how lousy he'd been to her and how everything was always entirely his fault and isn't he lucky she graces him with her time. I think Paul was saying that Rachel did not really let Ross know that she *loved* him and he was *important* to her. She took him for granted and, as she admitted to Phoebe, constantly focused on his shortcomings. I really do not understand how on earth you can take that 18 page diatribe of poison and glean evidence of her love out of it.

Which is the reason I have always held the idea of an R&R reunion with quite a lot of doubt, even if they save it for the final episode. I don't want R&R to suddenly reinact a scene from "Now, Voyager" (rent it, you'll know what I mean) in the middle of Central Perk like the 18-page Letter, the List, and everything else they've done to hurt and spite each other (intentionally or not) magically never happened. I've always considered the break-up scene at the end of TOW the Jellyfish to be very funny, but seriously resulted in the staff writing themselves into a corner. Subsequent seasons did little to get them out of this aforementioned corner, and it seems like the Jill storyline won't improve matters either.

Tennant, that 18 page letter was exclusively about what a jerk he was and all the bad things he'd done and how much he had to grovel for her to accept him again. How on EARTH can you POSSIBLY glean ANY evidence of love and respect from her to him out of that in any way, shape or form?

Just in case.

I think you're being rather hard on Rachel here.

She described the letter as "It's just some things I've been thinking about. Some things about us, and before we can even think about the two of us getting back together, I just need to know how you feel about this stuff".

Ross later told Joey & Chandler that "She wants me to take responsibility for everything that went wrong in our relationship. I mean she goes on for five pages about, about how I was unfaithful to her!"

All I said was that the way Ross reacted to her letter could explain her reticence later on. I certainly did *not* draw any other conclusions about the contents of her letter, especially those that you accuse me of gleaning.

And we know little about the other 11 pages of the letter.
