Raunchiest Friends lines

Pretty interesting how the new show "Coupling" is regarded to be extremely raunchy and "pushing the envelope," when Friends, especially in its early years, had some pretty raunchy lines itself, with tremendous sexual innuendo. In the beginning, at that time, I think it pushed the envelope on what you could see at 8:00pm.

Raunchiest Friends lines I remember: Ep 215 (TOW Ross and Rachel--You Know) When R&R were making out in the planetarium: Rachel: Oh God! Ross, it's OK, it's OK. Ross: What? Oh, no no no, you just rolled over the juice box. Rachel: Thank God!

Ep 113 (TOW The Boobies) After Chandler accidentally saw Rachel's breasts: Ross: If you saw her boobies, she gets to see your pee-pee. Chandler: You know, I don't see that happening. Rachel: That's right! Tit for tat! Chandler: Well, I'm not showing you my "tat."

Ep 219 (TOW Eddie Won't Go) Rachel: How can I grow if you don't let me blow? (referring to the wind) Ross: (confused) I, uh--well, you know I let you do that.

There are many more than that, but that's just a sample. "Coupling" is probably just Friends to a greater extreme.

The BBC version of Coupling has stronger language to me, not just innuendo. We'll have to see what they do in the US with it.

Coupling is more like what you'd get if you crossed Friends and Sex and the City. For one thing, in Coupling there are more multiple relationships -- eg, Susan has slept with all three of the men, Steve has slept with two of the women, etc. There aren't a load of fake orgasms, like on SATC, but the sensibility is much closer: they talk about stuff that most people (especially in England) are too embarrassed to mention. I'd say offhand that the characters in Coupling are much less likable than Friends, but that is a common characteristic of British comedy, where perhaps the short series mean that it's not so necessary to have the characters be the kind of people you want living with you. Some of the best British comedies -- AbFab, Fawlty Towers, Till Death Us Do Part (remade in the US as All in the Family), most recently The Office -- succeed because their characters are exaggerated, loathesome archetypes.

I still personally don't find a lot of Coupling funny, but (after being rather snide about it a while back) I feel I should say that many of my British friends think parts of it are the funniest things they've ever seen on TV.

But I watched the interview on the DVD with the writer (who I believe posted here briefly some weeks back), and from what he says the show's genesis was actually far distant from the Friends idea. It began as a piece about his and his wife's courtship, and evolved to include the circle of friends in the show.

I can't recall the episode nor the exact dialog, but there was a little post breakup exchange between R&R with Rachel saying she had liked that thing Ross did with his finger.

Anyone else remember the details of this one...I know I didn't dream it.

Do you mean in 701 The One with Monica's Thunder where Rachel tells Ross that he was always good at the "stuff" and that she liked the way he used his hands? Ross was so pleased with that remark that he kept showing Rachel his hands when he was insinating that he wanted sex with Rachel. That eppy was so funny. Esp when Rachel said "come on Ross, let's go have s*x" LOL
