Ep. 623 TOW The Ring

Talk about a crappy episode. I don't know about you guys, but that episode stunk and did not give me one single laugh. It was obviously the worst ep. of the season. Negatives - Paul's crying "gates" were used by Chandler in the 8:30 repeat of TOW Chandler Can't Cry; can't they think of something different? - Chandler delivery of marriage was poor - Why didn't Chan ask the owner to hold the ring? - The restaurant scene was phoney and and too non-practical

This horrible ep. shouldn't be taken by surprise however, as the ep.
before the season finale are usually at the bottom rank of the season.
Season 1: Can't remember ep. and I haven't seen it
Season 2: TOW ? - Can't remember name right now, but it was bad
Season 3: TOW Ultimate Fighting Champion - poor attempt at ridding of the
          character, dumb idea
Season 4: TOW The Worst Best Man Ever - only decent second to last ep.
Season 5: TOW Joey's Big Break - C & J scene was totally not in sync,
          movie breakdown was unrealisic
Season 6: TOW The Ring - once again, poor attempt at ridding of a
          character, also negatives mentioned above in post

I couldn't disagree more. I laughed several times, it was hilarious.

He did but the guy must have forgotten as he was helping phoebe out. The other lady sold the guy the ring..

You have never seen a sympathetic guy that maybe liked that ring better after all?

I don't know, I really enjoyed the episode, I thought it was quite funny. I do think that Rachel's dumping of Paul was kind of weak and his story was kind of lame compared to the week before, but it was still good for a laugh. I really enjoyed the scenes with Phoebe in the jewelry store, and I liked her and Chandler together. I know some people were saying she comes off sometimes as not liking Chandler, but lately she's been really close to him, which is nice. One thing I love about Phoebe is how she contradicts herself all the time, like with Pottery barn, the fur coat, eating meat (In Vegas, how she said "For $.99 I'll eat anything" about the steak special..), in this ep it seemed like she was doing that with the musket. What's peace loving Phoebe doing admiring a gun? It was still funny though because of the way she acted. The scene in the restaurant, yes that was unrealistic, but as I was pointing out to a friend is how unlikely it would be that in real life a guy would forget his credit card and the jeweler would sell it to someone else while he was holding it for him. Realism isn't that funny though, plus it's kind of cute & sweet to see how far Chandler would go to get the perfect ring for Monica. Anyhow, the general consensus of the people I talked to who have seen it enjoyed it. But I doubt there's an episode that is universally loved by everyone anyway :)

Another thing, all those episodes you mentioned from the past I really enjoyed..go figure.

Well it wasn't all that special, but it wasn't all that atrocious either.

TOW The Birth was quite an excellent episode. If you haven't seen it, how do you know it was so bad?

On the other hand, 122 TOW The Fake Monica was probably the worst season 1 episode. You might be thinking of that one.

Folks should note that Claudia Shear, who played the Fake Monica, has a show on in New York which has received much critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards.

Actually, to say this one was the worst of season 1 does not necessarily mean it was at all bad. It might just be the least brilliant episode of season 1.

I guess I just think the idea of Monica looking up to someone who stole her credit card is kinda stupid. Befriending her might be one thing, but this is not what Monica did. However, I think they handled it reasonably well, and it at least made some sense. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as any of the other season 1 episodes, IMHO.

It's not one of my faves either, but I can understand Monica's motivation. She did not feel good about herself at this time (she'd rather have Ross's parents than her own) when here comes a woman who is living Monica's life better than she is. Don't forget that Monica was not paying for all their activities through her stolen credit card, that had been cancelled.

One interesting point is that Chandler calls her a geek for spending $69.95 on a Wonder Mop, yet in 405 "TOW Joey's New Girlfriend" he bonds with Kathy while revealing that he bought a Wonder Broom which she'd admired on TV.
