Elle MacPherson and general grumbles

In TOW The Princess Leia Fantasy, Chandler mentions the mental images he gets while doing it, and he mentions Elle MacPherson. Isn't it a bit dodgy to mention a celebrity, then have them appear as a different character? Do they think we don't notice?

The fact that I'm even posting this shows how superficial Friends has become recently. I don't want it to end without tying things up, but every week I'm draining the show for laughs. Pray for some decent storylines!!!! You can't just make fun of the characters all the time and call that a comedy!

I seriously doubt that the writers even remember that line. They don't seem to pay any attention to the show's history. Not that I even remember that little line. But even big events they forget about, and they change the character's personas at the drop of a hat. For instance, in one episode Monica is being picked on by the employees at the restaurant. Joey asks her why she doesn't just fire them and she comments on how she can't handle confrontation. Compare that to the episode in which Joey and Janine are dating and she totally goes off on, and threatens, Janine. It's a complete turnaround. I know all people change and evolve, but she did so rather extremely.

It's what I call the "Lucy" syndrome, only to a lesser degree. On the show "I Love Lucy," the characters/set props would not be consistant from show to show. Sometimes she could sing, sometimes she couldn't sing a note...I mean, it goes on and on. I know that usually sitcoms aren't as bad, but I always feel that they should be given a little freedom. There is a constant story line, and they should follow that as closely as possible. But when it comes to side stories, I don't think continuity is that big of an issue. Each story should stand on it's own.

Now, if Elle had decided to come on the show as herself, then I could see them resurrecting the old comments.

It would be perfectly valid for a character to say to Janine, "Hey, has anybody ever told you that you look like Elle Macpherson?", and for Janine to reply with something humorous. Make up your own replies now...

Nope. It's easy. Elle Mcpherson was mentioned but never appeared in the story. Janine roomed with Joey for several episodes. The notion that they are the same person is actually an illusion. They could just as easily get someone else to play Elle Mcpherson in a future episode if they wanted to. Granted it would not be par for the course on this show, but it's possible. It's really not a whole lot different from Giovanni Ribisi playing some guy who dropped a condom and then coming back and playing Phoebe's brother. They look like the same person only becasue the same actor plays both roles. But that's only because they didn't bother to make him look different in costuming. The fact remains that Phoebe didn't recognize him because he didn't look *to her* anything like the guy with the condom. The fact that the same actor played both roles is an illusion for our benefit.

Yes, and but would you remember if a guy dropped a condom in your guitar case about a year ago? His appearance the first time was so short that it wasn't really her seeing him differently to us, but just her not remembering him. We remember him because we study this show *way* too much :), but in her world funny things happen all the time. (OK, I'm stepping on a weird area here!)

But back to the Elle MacPherson thing, imagine if Elle was playing Janine at the same time as another person was playing Elle? Now *that* would confuse the new friends fans! :)

IIRC, Eire is just ahead of the UK, whereas Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden are slightly behind, and other European countries trail badly.

Britain has seen up to 610 I think we get a new episode every week.... and we are about 9 or so episodes behind the USA
