It�s never too early to speculate on the future of "Friends."

The deal between Warner Bros. -- the studio that produces the long-running sitcom -- and NBC expires at the end of next season. And the history of high-stakes negotiations between the two entertainment giants indicates any new deal will be expensive.

"Of course we want them back and of course we want the show back, absolutely," NBC entertainment chief Jeff Zucker tells the New York Post. So does that mean they�ll be back?

"Nobody knows," Zucker says.

Warner Bros. is the studio that changed the face of the TV industry in 1998 when it squeezed NBC into signing a $13-million an episode deal to renew the network's top-rated medical drama, "ER." That prompted all networks to negotiate for at least part ownership of almost every show they air to help keep the renewal fees from getting out of hand in case a program becomes a hit.

The "Friends" talks will be different from the famous "ER" negotiations. That deal was struck when "ER" was in its prime, while "Friends" has begun to show its age.

The smart thing for the Friends cast would be to announce that next season is the last--end it while the show still has some dignity left. It's not like they need the money...

No kidding, I still hold out hope John Wells pulls the curtain on ER after this season. It would just be safer for all involved IMO.

There was an awards show where Lisa and Jennifer accepted, and Lisa said something like "Thank you and I hope you join us for our one last season". I thought it was kind of strange that she was slipping in her own wishes since there is nothing official, or maybe she's sure that she and the other friends will not renew their contracts after next season.
