Is there a Newsgroup consenus about when (or indeed if) Ross went mental and when he stopped? People seem to give Ross a hard time but I reckon he is a great character (second of course to Joey) and is very well acted. DS seems to put on a role much more than the other actors who seem to play themselves.

They are all good, but everyone has their favourites.

I wouldn't say there was a consensus. If you assume that Ross as originally written was NOT mental, then it would appear they tried to make him so in Season Five. Producers thought he would be funnier that way; audience and critical reaction was mixed, at best. I can't tell you the exact moment that Ross started getting better again, but he certainly seemed to be more like his old self in the season seven finale when I watched it last week.
I boycotted much of season seven because I was completely fed up with Mondler and I couldn't watch Ross be crazy anymore. With the storylines shaping up for next season as has been rumored, it appears that C&M may finally recede back from their perpetual place at stage center EVERY EPISODE, and Ross will be more normal again. So I'm back.

Schwimmer's pretty under-rated - but unfortunately, the "Mental Geller" thing did not help his acting reputation. I have read in places where this talented man was rated as one of the five WORST actors in sitcoms because the Ross he produced for almost three years was so unpalatable and unbelievable. I wonder if his appearance in Band of Brothers will up David's reputation? Did anybody get to see it? (I don't have HBO.)

Whenever I watch vids at a friend's house and they haven't set the time, I have to put a flap of cardboard over the flashing or I can't watch anything. It looks really pernickity.

It seems to me that none of the characters are how they are in real life, but they do all act the same way. All the other films the six have been in, they have all acted as they do in Friends.
Or maybe it's because I'm so used to seeing them that its hard to see them do anything else.
