Its sometimes confusing when a show's title is a set of initials. I managed to work out what 'CHiPs' means- California Highway Patrol, and of course 'M*A*S*H' = Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.
But I still haven't figured out what 'f-r-i-e-n-d-s' actually stands for. Any suggestions?

No, that's how the TV series rendered it. The novel and movie were just MASH. However, _posters_ for the movie used M*A*S*H, and it would not be surprising if some later editions of the book copied it.
