"The Dick Van Dyke Show"

When Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore were recently on "Larry King Live" they talked about how Carl Reiner told them "The Dick Van Dyke Show" would never go beyond five years because it would be too difficult to keep the show creatively and artistically superior. Sadly, I have to ask if you feel the same should have been true for "Friends." After all, few sitcoms that lasted beyond five years really maintained their quality. "I Love Lucy" had to move the characters to the country in season six. "All in the Family" lost Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner and equally as important stopped taping before an audience. The strange twists the Ross character underwent the last few years would be a strong argument for ending the show now. The idea of the show moving full circle by sending one of the friends behind the Central Perk counter would also make the case. After all, it's one thing for someone trying to make it out on her own to settle for the first job she could get. But in a booming economy, we're supposed to believe that Joey couldn't find any thing better? Or is it that Joey is still such an idiot that he couldn't handle anything better. If that's the case, maybe the show should end. I would hate not having "Friends" to watch each Thursday night. But I'd rather have top notch "Friends" coming over rather than a pale comparison to its older self.

David I can see that you have put alot of thought into your post, but when it comes to 'Friends' I don't need to put in much thought to my response! I love the show!! plain and simple...It would be terrible to not have it to look forward to, and see all the characters ever evolving. Anyway in my opinion there is no such thing as a bad 'Friends' episode. But alas it will all come to an end one day I know, but I believe all the cast have a pretty firm grasp on their own use-by dates. As each of them, especially Jen Aniston & Courtney Cox Arquette, mention in many interviews that they are quite aware of the longevity of their characters and the show itself. Renate
