I can't remember. The first thing I can remember of how we (the audience) met Phoebe is when she was moving her stuff from Monica's apartment to be "rewired". But how did Monica meet her and was convinced enough so Phoebe could be her roommate?
That'd be cool to have in a flashback episode, though.
What I meant to say, we know how Monica and Ross know Chandler (best friends and roommates), Rachel also went to the same school as Monica, Joey moved in after Chandler put up an ad when Kip moved out...
But there's the big empty about Phoebe... How could she have moved on from living on the streets to Monica's apartment?

The episode you described IS a flashback episode. Have you seen 101? Rachel coming in wearing a weddingdress?? That's where you meet everyone.. and eventually because of the conversation of the group you know Phoebe lived with Monica Phoebe moved her stuff out the apartment BEFORE the first episode.
