Where's Emma

It has always bothered me that the writers used a pregnancy as a plot device for an entire season, but now the baby seemed to be inconvenient to the rest of show. And it really bothered me that Rachel would accept a position in Paris that quickly without heavily considering the implications on her family. Where was Emma staying? Was Rachel going to come back for her? Absolutely, totally unrealistic. April

Think about it!!! We're not seeing these FRIENDS all 24 hours of their day, but only for a few minutes out of each day -- just the highlights of their days. Besides, Rachel said Emma was with her mom.

Just enjoy the show for what it is -- a brainless sit-com -- enjoy it!

I don't even think her brother and their family were at her wedding. And her new husband gets all of 5 seconds screen time, she is a newly wed and is never around him - seems like a strange thing too and also against character. This season had the characters falling away from how they usually would behave, all over the place. I was waiting for Joey going to L.A. but that didn't happen. I was hoping for some goodbyes from Ben, Ross's first wife and her wife. I know Ross isn't moving but it would have been nice if they got some air time this season - after all the "ex" Janice did. Also Monica's parents, Rachel's parents, Chandlers parents (Now that would have been funny - especially if they had Kathleen Turner as his mom again), Phoebe's real mom - etc. Seems so much just left there.

At any rate, I will miss them all a great deal and don't know what show will make me laugh like that again.

that's true, and that throught crossed my mind too. He made a big deal about Emily coming over here because he didn't want to leave Ben and move to England (back in season 4), so that seemed out of character that he wasn't concerned about Emma being another country.

ok...how's this for a theory so you can sleep better at night.

perhaps, ross and rachel would/could made an agreement that emma would spend a total of six months out of the year in NYC...and the rest of the time in Paris. it's called joint custody. just a thought.

Might be just my interpretation of things, but it has always seemed to me that Ross hasn't been as involved in the parenting with Emma as he was with Ben. Maybe because Ben was a boy, or because Ben was the first -- but the interactions between Ross and Emma haven't been played up as much. It looks like she's almost just incidental to his life. I don't think that was developed too well in the writing.

It's amazing how many people complain about things when if they'd simply watched the show properly, they'd have the answer.

Emma's location was specifically mentioned last night, and so was the reason why she wasn't (yet) going to Paris.

And it's also amazing how many people complain things on tv series when they clearly don't grasp that not only is it fiction (so it doesn't have to follow true to form) but there are real limitations on what can be done.

There are rules for dealing with small actors. They can be on the set for a fairly limited time, even if they wanted to and their parents wanted them to. So there is no way that there can be a real actor there playing the role to the extent needed of a real baby.

They likely aren't great actors, either, so even if the show was allowed to keep them on the set all the time, they'd not be there. They'd start crying, want food, want to sleep, do all the real things that babies want to do, but which may not fit the script at that time. YOu don't want actors waiting around, not when they are getting big salaries, along with the equipment and crew, waiting for a 6 month old to wake up from their nap in order to do a scene.

And finally, babies are a prop. They can't do anything, so their only purpose is to show people like you that they haven't disappeared. If the baby was on the set all the time, it would force the parents to simply carry some dead weight around constantly, merely to show you that the baby was still there. It gets in the way of the rest of the scenes. No, that isn't a realistic representation of having a child, but after all, this is a tv series not real life.

Take note that many shows, after a few episodes where the newborn is shown and talked about, ages the kid so they are a more manageable age. If a baby that can only be carried around is a liability on a show, a baby that can merely crawl may be even worse since it will crawl. But someone a few years ago can talk, can move around, can be part of the episode. So goodby baby Emma, hello 5year old Emma.

I know its TV but isnt it unusual to get to bring home babies on the same day they were born. Little far fetched. Of course the other thing out there, and being in NYC I can relate. It is not humuanlly possible to get from JFK airport in Jamaica NY to Newark Airport located in New Jersey in 20 minutes, no matter what time of the day or night it is. But I deal with it as it is only TV, and most of the audience outside of the NY'rs have no clue

Remember, because of the phone call, everyone got off that plane. Who knows how much time it took for the airline to recover from that.

George on Seinfeld once made the trip between airports in good time, though I don't remember what the time was.

That part was a tad too unreal to me (even for a sitcom). In the first place, good luck getting a plane to stop just so you can get off unless it's a real emergency -- and in the second place, a phone call like that these days probably would have triggered a major security alert.

The bringing of the babies home the same day didn't strike me as unrealistic, I know women who have gone to birthing centers (or even hospitals) and came home same day with the babies, especially if they are women with no insurance.

(Did anyone else think the babies' mother would have made a great pair with Joey? :)
