923 "TOI Barbados (part 1)"

Ross & Charlie begin at the palaeontology conference a day before the others, so Joey goes with them. He looks forward to spending the 5-hour flight with Charlie under a blanket, until Ross reminds him that it's not an invisibility cloak! But to Joey's surprise, once they reach the hotel in Barbados, Ross is in his own element, with even a palaeontology groupie begging him to give her an autograph.

Charlie is entranced to hear Ross practicing his keynote speech; but due to Chandler using his computer to look at pornographic emails, a virus wipes the hard disc, wiping the speech: and Ross has neither a back-up nor a printout. However, Charlie claims she can remember the whole thing, so she gives up her time with Joey to help Ross.

Left to his own devices, Joey is joined by Rachel. Wandering to a pharmacists convention, they steal two name tags - Rachel's is meant for a Kate Miller, which Joey promptly sticks onto her left breast.

Rachel comments that's the most sex she will get, so Joey obligingly pats it into place a few times, gives her breast a good swirl around, then pats it some more. As a goofy smile sneaks onto her face, Joey finishes her boob off properly, but she droops when they go inside.

Ross makes a pyramid out of bath products while Charlie does all the work of writing his speech. He is really impressed, then as he thanks her, their faces come close, and they have a moment. Ross is even more impressed when she teaches him how to fiddle the mini-bar; then after Charlie gets Ross talking about his first marriage, she reveals that her ex-fianc was gay, and soon the two of them are connecting.

Joey & Rachel have a fun time, but when he asks about her love-life, she tries to deny it. Joey knows her too well to be fooled, so presses her until she gives in. But just as she's about to tell him the truth, they're interrupted by Ross, with a hungry Charlie. As Joey takes her to dinner, Rachel & Ross watch the pair depart, and sigh in unison.

                             ---o0o---

Back in Central Perk, Phoebe is preparing for the journey, when she accidentally refers to David as "Mike". She makes a mess of laughing this off, so Monica drags her outside - where Phoebe confesses that while she's crazy about David, she can't stop thinking about Mike.

Meanwhile, Chandler insists he's bad at giving advice, but informs David that Phoebe dumped Mike for refusing to marry her. He suggests that David lets Phoebe know he's open to marriage, but the scientist takes this the wrong way, and decides to actually propose to her.

When Monica (looking very hot in a loose blouse) finds this out, she informs Chandler that Phoebe will reject David's proposal, his heart will be broken, they won't recover, and she'll end up alone again.

When they arrive on Barbados, it is pouring with rain, and the high humidity causes Monica's hair to frizz to twice its volume, making her look like one of The Supremes, or even Roseanne Rosannadanna!

But once Phoebe learns that David plans to propose, she tells Monica that would be fantastic, since Mike would've married her only if she kidnapped him first. Monica phones Mike to warn him of events, then orders him to call Phoebe; making Chandler accuse her of meddling.

At the restaurant, David is about to propose when Mike shows up, and insists that he asks her first. When Phoebe says no, David is mildly triumphant, but she explains that she never needed a proposal, she just wanted to know if she & Mike could have a future together.

Phoebe informs a defeated David that she might have told him yes, but that would be wrong; thus the poor guy regrets all his years in Minsk without her, plus the toe he lost to frostbite. As he departs, Phoebe & Mike kiss, and an even bigger-haired Monica exults in her meddling.

                             ---o0o---

This was actually quite a good episode, as long as one puts aside the high expectations of a season finale. Both stories were rather jolly, as long as one only has hopes for the 'right' couples. And meddling Monica was not too overbearing, as long as one is able to find enough humour in her hair taking on a wild life of its own.

Meanwhile, the script did a fair job of handling nine characters, with everyone getting a fair go, including Aisha Tyler who finally is becoming to come alive; and veteran scene-stealer Hank Azaria, who did very well with the difficult task of portraying the tragic figure of David, realising he wasted his life, and being shafted.

But of course the main event was the ongoing love-square, which is now showing distinct signs of folding about its diagonals. Freed of his usual duty as resident loser, Ross gave good value once he had some quality time with Charlie; while yet again Joey & Rachel were good fun, as long as one is not put off by a certain risqu scene.

                             ---o0o---

After not seeing Emma herself for quite a long while (the last two episodes we just saw her pushchair) we at last got a proper look at her. This time she was no animatronic robot, but a real child; as one can tell since her eyeline was all over the place, presumably looking for her real mother. Those who didn't believe it was a robot before, should now be able to see the huge difference quite easily.

When Rachel reaches out to take Emma from Ross, take a look at her left forearm, where she seems to be wearing a bandage. This becomes obvious later on when she complains to Geller about the monsoon. As nothing was said, it must be Jennifer Aniston who was injured; does anyone know what had happened to her?

Wasn't it sweet to see Ross so excited all his friends were coming to his big conference, that he took so much trouble to get them full passes? Phoebe tried to be supportive, Chandler said he was looking forward to the speech, yet once again it's Rachel who put him down.

Is Ross's joke about an invisibility cloak the first Harry Potter reference on the show? They made nothing of Monica's bushy hair...

If Joey really had been a palaeontologist, would Sarah the groupie have asked him to sign her bra, instead of just a book?

Ross is quite correct, no "The" in "Days of Our Lives", but is Joey used to hearing a narrator say "these are the days of our lives"?

In the past, Joey has said "Days of Our Lives" correctly 22 times, and never wrong once; while the phrase "the days of our lives" has come up four times as part of a normal sentence.

Joey gave thanks to thongs in "508 TOW the Thanksgiving Flashbacks", but has he ever worn a thong? Well, he almost wore a lavender thong in 722 "TOW Chandler's Dad", but he then changed his mind. However, Chandler did wear a hot pink thong, in 213/4 "TOA the Superbowl".

Did you realise that Joey wanting to dig a hole was great continuity with 325 "TOA the Beach", where he dug a huge hole in the sand? Does this mean that Chandler Bing will end up peeing on someone again?

Kate Miller? This cannot be a coincidence. Was this an in-joke, in which case does anyone have any ideas? Or was it foreshadowing, to label Rachel with the name of Joey's long-lost love from Season 3?

Or did Kate marry a millionaire pharmacist for his money, and she will turn up in a new episode, to wreak havoc for Joey & Rachel?

Was the pat-a-cake scene inspired by the Monica/Richard out-take?

When Ross made his pyramid, did he get his building blocks from the bathroom, or did he have to take them from his suitcase?

If Charlie's fianc was gay, did she lie at the soap opera party?

When Ross & Rachel sighed together, was that the first time that they've been on the same wavelength - while sober - in 7 years?

Chandler & Monica have now been happily together for 120 episodes.

How come Chandler & Monica can quite happily talk about science topics to David, yet feign sleep or death when Ross tries to talk to them?

Both David & Monica were right about how a plane flies, though.

Whilst Phoebe first refers to David as "Mike", did you notice that his mug of coffee is *exactly* the same colour as his shirt? It even seems to have the same patterning on it! Well, either that, or David was actually holding an invisible mug of coffee...

Did you notice that the blackboard outside Central Perk still announces "Neighbour Tim", the way it did back in 802?

With all those extras at Central Perk & two conferences, was this the episode with the greatest number?

Okay, when Monica leans forward to talk about Mike to Chandler, all the CCA fans are going to blow a gasket! But wasn't it great to see that she cared more for Phoebe's well-being than bitchy Rachel did?

Yet doesn't Phoebe have back-ups to ensure she won't end up alone?

When Monica's hair gets some extra body, isn't she just adorable?

But why exactly did Phoebe refer to her as "Roseanne Rosannadanna"?

When Chandler & Monica are at the restaurant watching David propose to Phoebe, how come we don't see Joey & Charlie arrive there?

Awww, poor David, to be so badly treated, and yet he was the one with the ring! By the rules established in 624/5 "TOW the Proposal", David should have been the winner, just as Chandler not Richard had a ring.

And how David suffered in Minsk without Phoebe, did she pick the right guy? It was only two years ago that he was the love of her life.

Or was David doomed by Hank Azaria having more clout than Paul Rudd?

                             ---o0o---

PLEASE note that this is about the *first* part of the finale, that's everything while Phoebe is torn between David & Mike.

Erg. I have a hard time pretending this episode is two eps, don't you?

Not "writing" his speech; reconstructing it!

Yes--it's nice to see some focus on his career.

.>Phoebe tried to be supportive,

Really? I didn't think it was so supportive of her to say that David would enjoy attending the sessions only because he needs to stay out of the sun.

Was that a Harry Potter reference? I haven't read the books or seen the films.

?

No.

Only if he's in the habit of watching the show broadcast on TV. It's not as if a narrator comes in and does the intro each day.

A girl can hope. <eg>

What pat-a-cake? What out-take?

He got them from a basket on the sideboard. (Translation: I dunno.)

When she said. . . .

No.

They were settling an argument. It doesn't count!

Why, yes! (That's a lie.)

He developed it in Minsk when he was supposed to be otherwise engaged.

No, but then again I never noticed it in the first place. (I guess I don't have "eagle eyes," like some folk. I have mole eyes, maybe. ;) )

See my post at:

Because they weren't the focus of the scene.

I wanted her to end up with David. :(

I don't know.

Okay, but I reserve the right to pout. . . .

That's what they want you to think.

The acid test will be how the speech is received (no spoilers please).

Well yes, but also look at how much it meant to the poor guy.

Indeed, but I said she tried to be supportive, I didn't say she succeeded.

Possibly.

Really? Practically everyone I know has.

The leading female character is a kind but bossy girl with bushy hair.

Oh well, no point in being a palaeontologist, then.

Good point. But doesn't he watch the show on TV with his friends?

If that should be so, it's amazing that the writers thought they could slip that name in, without every fan jumping out of their seat.

It's a rhythmic clapping game that British children play. It's so old that American children are bound to play it too, but maybe your ancestors changed it to be about frisking for guns or something.

Anyway, as two children sing "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man, bake me a cake as fast as you can", they clap their hands together in time with the words, then clap their hands against their friend's hands, then beat their hands upon each other's chests, and so on.

Sorry, it wasn't Richard, it was Joey.

I'm afraid I confused two different out-takes there.

In my defence, both of them consist of Chandler bursting into the kitchen to find Monica up to her tricks with another man.

What??

LoL, you nearly got me. :)

CHARLIE: I just broke up with Albert Wintermeyer. He is brilliant,
and while that is everything one looks for in a boyfriend,
he had a lot of issues...

ROSS: Oh! like what?!

CHARLIE: Okay, you want the dirt? Alby was seriously insecure. I mean,
he was really intimidated by Benjamin Hobart, the guy I dated
before him, who won two Nobel Prizes.

ROSS: Oh my God! Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who hasn't won the Nobel Prize?

CHARLIE: No... bu-but my first boyfriend Billy did just win the McArthur genius grant..

Billy, Benjie, or (probably) Alby was gay - but Charlie didn't let on, even though she told Ross that she was giving him the dirt.

When then?

It was still a scientific argument, and they don't go to Ross about such things.

Go have a look then, and be truly astonished. :P

LOL, well he should have made his fortune, and swept Phoebe off her feet.

Awww.... poor you!

Ooh, thanks!

I don't mean anything big, they could have just turned up & sat down.

I'm not so sure about that, but better him than Mike, yes.

Ah.

Awww, don't pout sweetie - I've got this afternoon free to do more on the review, and then I hope to complete it on Sunday morning.

I know this is technically true, but since I viewed it as one continuous episode, I think of it as an organic whole--and it's hard for me to limit myself to discussing the first half. :(

Yup

BTW, did you notice that this new baby they have portraying Emma has very different coloring than the one in "Inappropriate Song"? The other had dark hair/brown eyes, while this new one has light brown/blue.

Awww, don't take that away from Ross! :(

Gung'f abg snve!

Are we disagreeing about something? ;)

But to me it didn't seem like a genuine try. In fact, it seemed rather mean-spirited. As a scientist, David probably *would be* interested in the sessions, even though he's in a different scientific field.

Now you know someone who hasn't (contrarist that I am!).

Ah, we're still in HP references. I've seen that little girl in promos and on talk shows.

By that standard, is there any point in being an engineer? ;)

I don't know. We've seen them all watching together when Joey first started, and also when (IIRC) he was reinstated. But do they make a regular habit of it? I suspect not. Though since Rachel and Monica like the show, *the* might tape and watch. Joey doesn't seem particularly interested in the show (beyond it being his job).

Maybe they threw it in for the alert fans to pick up on it (casual viewers wouldn't, I expect).

[snip explanation]

I'm familiar with the game--just not sure of the reference. Who was playing pat-a-cake?

I'm still confused, because I'm not remembering the outtakes you mean (sorry to be so clueless. . . . )

Giggle! :)

[snipped dialogue]

I guess this depends on whether you consider omission a lie. She either left out the fianc altogether, or left out that detail. Perhaps she didn't feel comfortable enough with Ross yet. Maybe she feared he'd judge her for not having guessed (remember she only revealed that once she knew about Carol).

Or perhaps this was part of the insecurity she mentioned regarding Alby. Perhaps he'd been too insecure to face his sexuality.

Totally agreeing about the cuteness of Emma; agreeing that they should watch what they say around her. . . . . They seemed very much on the same wavelength in TOW Rachel's Other Sister (picture them knocking wood, etc.).

Maybe they're more polite about making conversation with casual acquaintances.

[checking]

Oh, yeah--they do match.

True (but you only seem to care about him for learning his last name. I don't care if we never learn it, but I like the character and would have liked to have seen him stick around!).

I guess if I cared enough about such things, I'd watch for them--at least when possible (lots of mommy-multitasking these days--watching _Friends_ while nursing a baby, eating a sandwich, stopping everything to take baby to his changing table and change his diaper [aka "nappy"] [or enlist husband's help for that!], return to previous activities. . . . .)

YW

Not worth the trouble, I suppose.

I know you have ulterior motives!

If it can't be David (and it seems to be the case), I don't mind it being Mike. I do think Paul Rudd is a cutie.

All right, then. :)

Well, you didn't quite seem to be right there with me.

You're not looking at this in the right way.

Do you not remember "CRAP FROM THE STREET"?

I said *practically* everyone. There's an old woman I know who hates anything that's fictional, and a few babies too young to read yet.

Well of course, in the talk shows, she (her name is Emma Watson and she's a year *younger* than her character) wears her own, less bushy, hair.

Sadly, no.

Joey might well watch it just to sit with Rachel.

Could be.

You know sweetie, you have a habit of snipping the bit which would answer your next question. :)

What does "beat their hands upon each other's chests" suggest to you?

That's okay. :)

[Scene: Allesandro's kitchen in 410 "TOW the Girl from Poughkeepsie" where Joey, who is one of the waiters, is patting Monica's left breast from when she set it on fire.]

JOEY: Oh! Ooh-ooh!

MONICA: What are you doing?!

JOEY: You're still a tiny bit on fire there.

MONICA: Oh geez! Okay! Thanks!

(Matthew Perry runs in and starts patting Courteney's right breast, then walks away. Matt Leblanc slowly stops patting her left breast.)

[Cut to that same kitchen in 625 "TOW the Proposal (part 2)" where Richard has come to see Monica.]

RICHARD: It was great seeing you the other night.

MONICA: Well, it was good to see you too. Did you come down here to tell me that?

RICHARD: Noo! I came down here to tell you something else. I came here to tell you I still love you.

(Suddenly the door flies open and in walks Chandler!!)

CHANDLER: What the fu(beep)ck are you doing?!

:)

Telling Ross that she was giving him the dirt was a lie.

True. I'm not having a big go at her, but it does seem that she lied.

Neah, not really, that's just typical parent.

Yes, you can have that one. :)

Any more?

You're saying that they made it up for the occasion?

Right. :)

I actually like him quite a lot, he's what Ross ought to be more like.

Bet you can't pee while combing your hair... ;)

The latest version of my review says...

If you're wondering about Roseanne Rosannadanna, she was a character with extremely bushy hair, played by Gilda Radner on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s. Click on http://tinyurl.com/bvw3 for a picture.

Sigh.

I didn't realize you considered this an intelligence test. FWIW, *all* of the other finale discussions in atf are about the whole, entire, one-hour episode. However, like most babies her (I assume it's a girl, and she is probably a pair of twins) eyeline is all over the place. There is a baby boy who plans Ben Kirk in "Neighbours", and he looks at whoever is holding him, which looks far more natural, but he is a rare exception.

Well yes, it is, it's just that "dejanews" just comes naturally to me since I used it for a long time - to tell the truth I *was* a bit startled the other day to end up at google when I'd typed in www.dejanews.com! ;)

hehe... ;) Apparently a lot of people think so. Once I got an email from somebody who asked me on advice about a certain program since I'd posted a lot about it in various NGs. When I asked him how the hell he found me, he said he searched for posts about the program on dejanews and my name constantly turned up... Google had already bought the archives off dejanews back then, so I wondered what their site looked like and was quite amused to find it was redirected to Google :) But OTOH it shows you're not alone by still referring to the Google Groups site as dejanews.

And on a related topic, if you go to www.napster.com it'll take you to the Roxio website, which is a burning program. Imagine, there'll be a time when people won't even remember Napster or Deja. I'm starting to feel old, especially since I gave a presentation on how to get a website listed in search engines today and told my co-students about the old days where people wrote tons of keywords at the bottom of their page, but in the same colour as the background was, so that nobody would see it. I was the only in the room to have ever come across such a page.

Yeah, I imagine they're hard to train when they're that little. :)

You know, I'm thinking they must have decelerated Emma's age. I recently saw my one year, 2.5-month-old niece. The last time I'd seen her was last summer when she was 3.5 months old. She is much, much bigger than this new Emma, who looks much more like the 3.5-month old from last summer.

The last clue we had to Emma's age was when Rachel mentioned having had sex with Ross "eighteen months ago," placing Emma's age at nine months then. I wonder if they intended to freeze her at that age until they get around to advancing her sometime this fall.

He's a better friend to them than they are to him.

But it's quite common to use "crap" to mean "stuff"--it doesn't provide that much insight into Phoebe's psyche, and I don't think it provides a clue regarding her comment about David. It just seemed like a joke on par with the remarks the others were making.

I don't buy that she's so embarrassed about her intellectual pursuits. She wasn't shy about wanting to learn in her lit class.

Maybe, but that's probably what the actress who plays the mother has done, by getting involved with the child's family as his 'big sister'.

That's what Rachel said in 914 "TOW the Blind Dates" - but we have had another clue since then, since Monica reminded Chandler in 921 "TOW the Fertility Test" that they'd been trying to have a baby for over a year.

That's right.

What I'm saying is that Phoebe can be reticent in expressing support.

The way I look at it, 90% of the speech was Ross's, or whatever percentage you care to attribute to the main academic content.

What Charlie wrote, (and don't forget that all Ross did was play with some bath products), was exactly the same speech but in her own words, with a better turn of phrase perhaps, that made it more interesting to listen to, and less soporific.

As someone else complained about, how computer illiterate are these people? A virus cannot wipe out the entire hard drive just by being executed, at least on Windows based machines, as all the required files for the OS are protected, you cannot simply delete them. And what makes the whole thing even worse, it was an Apple laptop, most likely a G4 powerbook judging by the look. Since they run MacOS they're quite immune to all these viruses spread through email as they only affect Windows based systems (with Outlook/Outlook Express as the mail client). It's nonsense like this that makes people say "yeah, these computer viruses are dangerous, I recently went on this website and all of the sudden my monitor exploded. Must have been one of these viruses"..... Assuming the notebook was there as a product placement I also wonder why Apple didn't object to this.

They're really stressing this "Joey & Rachel couldn't care less about Ross and his speech while Charlie respects and is proud of him" thing, aren't they?

They *really* don't like me in Burbank

Wouldn't that be weird if she showed up again?

I believe you can count the final scene of 907 in as well, when they "danced" for Emma together

I think so. This was all doomed for me anyway, since I had read long ago that Paul Rudd was contracted for at least another five episodes - didn't even know Hank Azaria was going to be on back then. *damnit*....

For once I agree, Andr. Monica was not my favourite person in this episode, and coming from me that is something.

Did you like the way David went "ah-hah"?

Absolutely. How could the writers do that to him? :(

Well of course, the answer is that Hank Azaria is too much in demand to be a recurring character on the show, but at least they could have revealed his last name before they sent him out into the snow.

He should, but you can see why he did that.

She said that David would probably want to hear a few lectures.

Me too.

I love to dig holes on the beach, but sadly I'm doomed to failure, since when I was little my cousins dug holes 25ft deep, and I can't compete.

Unfortunately it will be hard to avoid the spoilers if she does, for some idiot will announce that Dina Meyer has been signed up by the studio.

What, when Ross betrayed her to their friends?

Oh dear, sulk.

Poor David was so downhearted, and the series is overdue for a death...

There, problem solved!

She didn't try very hard.

Yes, after I expended tons of energy explaining why it *wasn't* a betrayal, you told me that you liked my interpretation. I took that to mean that I'd convinced you. But now you've carried on calling it a betrayal, as if I'd never "spoken" at all.

Maybe you could make me feel better by reconsidering. . . .

No, because while I think Joey betrayed Ross, I don't think that Ross betrayed Rachel.

In the latter situation, it was quite obvious that both were doing the "inappropriate" song, so there was no way the friends would have taken Ross's feigned protest seriously.

In the former, they've no way to know it was actually Joey who had so strongly advocated their co-napping. For all they knew, Ross might have done this against Joey's will.

That's horrible! You'd actually want him *killed* to learn his stupid last name? Your last-name obsession is more extreme than I realized.

Not really. An actor appearing on "Friends" voiced a two syllable word sounding different from the way an actress on "The Simpsons" pronounces it. Nobody would pay any attention to this if the actor wasn't on both shows. I'm sometimes accused of being obsessed by trivia, but this is not so - however, if you want to believe in the connection Belphoebe, then that's just fine by me, as long as it makes you happy. Okay?

I feel like I'm in Physics again.....

dunno, post has surely gone off my local version of ATF by now. There was a thread about this though

Hmm, surely there's virii that delete the contents of the "My Documents" folder. Another point though, didn't Chandler say something about the attachment being pictures of Anna Kournikova? AFAIK the only *.jpg virii around are "proof of concepts" ones that don't really do any harm, they just show you could potentially cause damage that way. But I'm so not uptodate on Techie stuff, so I dunno. In my little world *.jpg virii don't exist ;)

What do you mean?

Do I seem like someone who has too much money?

He "signed" my MCP certificate, so he's alright by me

Charlie for one. :P

They had other troubles. Monica was hung up on Richard, Rachel was suddenly confronted with Ross' err... stronger side and Chandler and Joey had to settle a matter of principle (not sure if this works in English, I'm thinking of the German saying "Es geht hier um's Prinzip"), hehe...

So much for them reading your reviews...

Don't ask me, viruses die as soon as they enter my computer. But for the sake of the story, we can assume any possible virus did exist.

Maybe still so, since they've read what I'd like even more. :)

I don't think she'd get on with her sister-in-law.

Good. Or maybe it was "hah-hah".

Well, for starters Mike easily survived the critical 6-episode point...

10 Emily Waltham (414-501) 10 Mike Hanigan (903-923)

7 Janice Littman (224-308)

6 Julie ? (124-208) 6 Richard Burke (215-224) 6 Mark Robinson (311-319) 6 Pete Becker (318-324) 6 Kathy ? (405-413) 6 Tag Jones (704-714) 6 Mona ? (805-817)

5 Joshua Bergin (413-420) 5 Janine LeCroix (607-611) 5 Elizabeth Stevens (618-624)

4 Charlie Wheeler (920-923)

..as for going missing, Mike now holds the record at 5, having not been seen in 918-922. In second place is Mona at 3 (812-814). It's quite common to go missing for two episodes, Mike himself has done that twice (910-911 and 914-915).

Really? On what basis?

That's Phoebe for you. She's a nicer person in private.

Nice to see Ross as the popular one for once. :) Finally he can speak to someone who appreciates science. (Yeah, I know, apart from Phoebe. <g>)

This was so unrealistic. Why on earth didn't he have an extra copy? And don't get me started on him building a pyramid of bath products while Charlie helped him out. But we're already discussing this in another thread, so...

As for Charlie, she becomes nicer every day. I just hope she's a "Mona" and not a "Gary" when the writers decide to say goodbye to her.

410 TOW the Girl From Poughkeepsie all over again, even though the mere fact that it was Rachel this time around makes it different.

How thoughtful of him... :)

Talk about meant for each other. Even though Ross's obsession with raiding hotels for free stuff got old pretty fast after 919 TOW Rachel's Dream, it was actually quite funny here. And from the moment they started sharing experiences about gay partners, you knew something was going to happen. (Speaking of which, I thought Ross's suggestion for him, Carol and Susan only happened in 615/616, but oh well..)

I heard many fans complain about the fact that Ross and Charlie were *too* perfect for each other, and that it was contrived, but in many ways she really is a great match for him. She's a smart, lovely and funny woman, so yeah, poor Ross if he ends up with Charlie instead of Rachel.

And that was pretty much it when it comes to interaction between the two so-called star-crossed lovers.

That has been pretty obvious ever since her tough break-up in 916. And why shouldn't it be? Mike was a great guy. :)

I immediately thought of this line when I saw this scene: (817 TOW the Tea Leaves) Chandler: Im not great at the advice, can I interest you in a sarcastic comment? Some cheese?

Yeah, it's like you say, they should listen more to Monica.

Strange how something so stupid can be so funny. Speaking of which, it would have been funny to see Mr. Kotter and Roseanne Rosannadanna in a scene together..

I bet Chandler was reminded of his friends' meddling when he was going to propose. Fortunately, it usually turns out alright in the end.

Was this a 624 flashback or what? Thankfully, the woman chose the right guy here as well. And I'm still convinced that Phoebe will be driving Mike Jr and Sophie to soccer-practice in a boxy Volvo in a couple of years.

Agreed. David would have felt terrible if she had married him and called him Mike in her wedding vows... ;)

Yay! :)

I had expected much more from a season finale.

Monica was painfully loud once she got to Barbados, and I didn't like that part of her story, but her hair was funny.

I like Charlie. She fits well in the cast, and Aisha is oddly believable as a professor for some reason. I do feel bad for David, but I see what Chandler was saying, and in the end I was just as annoyed with David as Chandler was. He became a pushover in the restaurant, and this obviously became the character flaw that eliminated him from the show.

They were okay, but I just find this entire plot so incredibly boring. I want more papertowel fights, nap-partners and miracle-chairs. Those were the days...

They have used both a robot and a real baby this season. A couple of weeks ago Entertainment Tonight talked to the mothers of the two sets of twins who have played Emma so far. In fact, Emma at 7 months and older was played by twin girls of Greek descent, and apparently Jennifer started giving them Greek nicknames because she thought they were so adorable. The mother of the first set of twins said that they had been lucky enough to get 907 TOW Ross's Inappropriate Song, and she had had to dance around in front of her daughters together with Jennifer Aniston in order to make them smile.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I have no idea what happened to her, though.

Yeah, we can see the pattern. She has no respect whatsoever for what he does for a living. It would have been different if he had cared as much about his job as Chandler did with his former job, but Ross loves his job, and therefore, it's a big part of what he is.

That didn't occur to me, but who knows.

Hehe, depends on whether she's as crazy as Mon.

I have no idea. I've never watched the show.

But DOOL was involved some way in the scenes in question, right?

Chandler wore Monica's underwear to work as well. (704) Monica didn't say whether it was a thong or not, though.

I certainly hope not! He can help someone out in a different way instead.

I noticed that too. It was really bizarre.

Hehe. Maybe she married Barry the orthodontist who thought it would be great to go to a pharmaceutical conference dressed as a pharmacist?

You mean the Monica/Joey/Chandler outtake from 410, right?

Probably both. Plus, he could always steal some from the maid's cart in the hallway.

Perhaps she didn't talk about all of her partners in 920.

No, they've been fairly okay when they've dealt with Emma.

Yep. 5-year anniversary and everything.

Because Chandler spends the time observing David in order to do a good impression of him afterwards?

Oh, that's right! Very true, by the way.

They must really like him..

I dunno, but I heard Aisha say that she was terrified of bumping into people and falling flat on her face in the Central Perk scenes. (Not this episode, but another one.) So maybe they have increased the number of extras.

Yep. Who knows how many she has by now.

No. It wasn't too bad in the beginning, but it only got worse and worse. And she was terribly loud.

SNL-character. It's too bad they don't show SNL in Europe.

Perhaps Joey took her to the local Pizza Hut instead.

Chandler had a real and visible diamond, though. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend," remember? ;)

Monica thought Richard was the man she was supposed to spend the rest of her life with, and two years later that all changed.

I'm not sure. Paul Rudd is pretty well-known in the States. He has a critically acclaimed movie out at the moment ("The Shape of Things"), and he's constantly showing up in different plays and movies. Azaria has The Simpsons, so I don't know if one of them is busier than the other. I'm just going to be happy that Mike is back.

Well yes, apart from Ph-

Ah, you're ahead of me. :)

It makes no sense. Even someone who is no expert will have lost stuff before, so will have learnt by experience. It's like the way that adults check they have their key before slamming the front door shut - oh.

Well, this was *partly* in character. It was silly that he should mess about while Charlie helped him out; but given that he did, a pyramid of bath products was like him. They fit in his suitcase easier like that.

Quite so, but allow me to acquaint you with the *new* version of that paragraph, which I've carefully made as neutral as possible. This gives you another week before the final version of my 924 review goes up...

}Charlie is entranced to hear Ross practicing his keynote speech; but }due to Chandler borrowing his computer to look at pornographic emails, }a virus wipes the hard disc, deleting the speech: and sadly Ross has }neither back-ups nor a printout. However, Charlie claims that she can }recreate it, so she gives up her time with Joey to help Ross.

Yeah, I'm warming to her too.

I know what you mean, but I quite liked Gary's departure, since I hated the guy, so I was glad to see him painted black. On the other hand, poor Mona was really nice, and it was such a shame the way that Ross treated her so badly. You will recall that some episodes before she left, I had the idea that Joey/Rachel/Ross/Mona should share a large flat together, then the baby would have both parents without anyone spitting up.

But you're right, Charlie is nice; so we don't want to suddenly discover that she hasalready married, or doesn't want any children, or is boring when drunk, or hates Monica, or loves Chandler, or is too zesty, or has sex with her brother, or feels ensnared, or is immature, or decides to became a wrestler, or shaves her head, or makes a pass at Phoebe...

That's right! The poor JnP fans must now be feeling left out.

We reckon that from when goofy smile sneaks onto her face, it wasn't Joey patting Rachel's breast, it was Matt patting Jennifer's breast.

Here's the new carefully neutral version...

}Ross makes a pyramid out of bath products while Charlie does all the }hard work on the speech. He is really impressed; but then as he thanks }her, their faces come close, and they have a moment. Ross is even more }impressed when she teaches him how to fiddle the mini-bar; then after }Charlie gets Ross talking about his first marriage, she reveals that }her ex-fianc was gay, and soon the two of them are connecting.

It was the surprise shot of that little pyramid. Could the young Ross have fancied himself as an archaeologist instead of a palaeontologist?

Yes, this was a first for Ross, I think.

Ross said that he floated the idea, he didn't say that it happened.

Well, except for the way she dumped Alby for being insecure.

They are certainly better suited, and Charlie is no bitch.

Yep. Not a spark. For a moment, I thought perhaps they would comfort each other, but there was less affection than Chandler & Joey would have shown to each other. They just went to their separate rooms.

He might be a great guy in terms of what would be good for her, but he's become so *boring*! David is always fun, Azaria knocks spots off Rudd.

Lol yes, good call.

That was neat continuity, and in this episode Chandler also combined advice & cheese, when he mentioned pizza toppings.

Thanks, though of course Phoebe still had her back-up back-up... ;)

Absolutely! Though to be scientific, you can make your own humidity meter with a long strand of your hair (carefully degreased) tied onto a long pointer made of plastic or balsa-wood, near to the pivot.

Ah, that's what Joey calls teenaged Ross in 214 "TOW the Prom Video" when the gang sees his 80s haircut, (though the transcript spells the name as "Cotter"). So, who is this guy, then? Was he on SNL?

Maybe, but the pig sex thing was very nearly disastrous.

In a way, but the guy with the ring is supposed to get the girl!

We might have to disagree on this, except that since I reckon David would be so much better for Phoebe, I'm glad that he's out of the way, leaving second-rate Mike to be disposed of by Ross.

Nah, you're forgetting what the tea leaves said. ;)

LOL, it's a shame this wasn't a running joke in the series, with Monica saying "I take thee Joey" at her wedding to Chandler.

Ooh, you heartless woman! The poor guy was *devastated*!

Exactly.

That's what I meant, the hair was the good bit.

Yeah. I like the way it seems as though she can't quite believe what the gang gets up to.

Yes, I too was annoyed by David's lack of backbone here.

Well, I wouldn't say it was boring, it was just kinda nice.

Well quite, that kind of thing is what was lacking here. Maybe we'll see more of The Cobras in S10, if the other four should turn against them.

Awww...

I'm not surprised, but that's what was going wrong here, with the baby looking at its mother instead of Miss Aniston.

How soon did you notice it? In the above passage, I cited the first moment the bandage is visible, and when it is the most obvious, but in fact for me recognition came at some point in between.

It's a mystery...

Quite so.

OTOH, we've also seen that Ross has no respect for her career either, he's never been supportive; while as recently as the previous episode Joey lauded Rachel to his squeeze as a fashion expert.

A friend tells me there's been quite a few on Buffy TVS.

Oh, I though it was just the whole showbiz thing.

Would you let Matthew Perry sign your bra? ;)

Me neither.

Well, yes.

Oh yes, good call.

Grin.

Yeah. I think it's significant, possibly on a level with the casual references to the girl from the Xerox place in 301 and 303.

Gosh! Well, Barry was available, the last time we heard. (615 teaser)

Yeah, unfortunately I confused it with the out-take from 625.

In my defence, both of them consist of Chandler bursting into her work kitchen to find Monica up to her tricks with another man.

Ooh, he could have built an ancient Mayan city.

Maybe, but it seemed as though she did, and omitting a fianc is a bad omission to make.

I know, but that's to be expected. I'm thinking of "jinx" moments.

Ah, the 5-year anniversary comes in 924, (due to S6 having 25 episodes).

Really? What makes you say that, sweetie?

Thanks!

Yeah, the bastard. I wanna see Phoebe back there.

Could be.

But then, Aisha is not exactly an experienced actress, is she?

Oh, I didn't think of it like that! Maybe she has.

I wonder how far down the list she's placed Roger (709/811).

Awww...

I suspect that some of her charm is lost on you. ;)

Is that where Mr Kotter/Cotter comes from?

RPGOL!

However, a friend has told me that earlier in the episode, Charlie asked Joey if they could have a romantic dinner on the balcony, and he agreed.

So, we all missed that one!

Hmmmm... the best bulge in a guy's trousers is where his wallet is...

Yeah, good point.

And she was upset for far longer than Phoebe was.

I think that the better measure of fame is that Azaria is by far the better-known outside of their homeland.

Okay sweetie, I'm happy that you're happy. :)

Funny--I always thought it was more of a slap in the face to the actor, as if it's not certain that s/he will be smart enough to answer to a different name. I suppose not, though I'd make a distinction based on whether the character is built around a well-established persona, such as Jerry Seinfeld. But when Tony Danza was cast as Tony Banta in _Taxi_, he was unknown (so in that case there'd be no special motive to prevent confusion for an audience with no existing associations regarding the actor).

Of course, by the time he was Tony DiMeo in _The Tony Danza Show_ (1997), things were different.

BTW, I agree with Marita that having Ross fail to have a hard copy of his speech is ridiculous. I'm so neurotic about such things that I would have had two hard copies (one in the carry-on and another in the checked luggage), one burned to CD, and a copy e-mailed to myself, in addition to the file saved on the hard drive. (Okay, now you think I'm a Monica! ;) )

Oh, yours might be, but my sisters were born 10 and 12 years before me; and the younger one was given the privilege of choosing both boy & girl names, to help prevent jealousy etc, which apparently did the trick.

Awww... I think it's a lot easier being the baby of the family.

Sure, but if the Bings adopt, their child could well be intermediate in age. (In the FtNG discussion below, I shall assume they get pregnant).

Oh yes, they'd be Ben, Frank, Lesley, Chandler, Emma, and Daniel.

If they ended up as couples, then to avoid consanguinity it would have to be FnE, so the FtNG fans would divide between the BnL/DnC shippers and the BnC/DnL shippers. I think I'd be in the first group, since it would be much more fun if Chandler's father-in-law was Chandler.

Hehe, I knew you were going to say that, so I thought I might as well include that last part.

Yeah. If you haven't learned it before, it's the first thing you learn at college. Seeing that Ross not only has a PhD, but also works at a university, it was a very unbelievable scenario.

You'd think that he'd be more focused on his speech (and his career) than free bath products.

Sounds good. :)

Four's Company?

Boring when sober.. (Fun Barry, 210) Or are you thinking about someone else?

Yeah, we don't want any of those.

Yes, that pairing seems very unlikely now.

Sounds very reasonable.

Yes, that's much better, and it should please Belphoebe as well.

Well, yes, he went to Egypt with his dad, and he likes to think of himself as Indiana Jones, so that's a possibility.

Yes, I think so too. Even though he has shared his past with others in the past (e.g. 405, 512 and 909), I can't remember him bonding about gay partners.

Maybe Charlie will be the woman who finally helps him with his insecurity.

Exactly. Ross would respect her work, and vice versa.

Yes, it's weird how this has changed. They used to have amazing chemistry, and somehow you knew they would end up together in the end. However, the last time I can remember thoroughly enjoying Ross and Rachel together is 716, and that wasn't even a romantic storyline.

I disagree, but Azaria is still a great actor. (He was great in the play.) I used to think that Phoebe should end up with David, but I don't anymore. Mike is just a better match for Phoebe IMO.

Yes, David really should go to Joey if he wants to know about pizza toppings.

Not if she cancelled her back-up.. (516)

Oh, I didn't know that.

Belphoebe beat me to it.. :)

Yes, but fortunately, Monica stopped in time, and Joey intervened.

Not if the ring is a terrible gumball-looking ring.

Ah, I see. What is it that you dislike so much about him anyway?

I've never believed in tea leaves.

I wouldn't want to see that, but in a way Chandler deserved it given his breakdown right before the wedding.

Yeah, I'm really cold and heartless, plus I just wanted David to stop stuttering. ;)

However, it's ridiculous that CC is stuck doing a story about her hair, while the love rectangle takes center stage once again.

Yes, and she shows the others that paleontologists are not necessarily old geeks like Professor Sherman.

He didn't use to be this bad. After all, he stood up against Max in 110 TOW the Monkey, and the fact that he stayed in Minsk for eight years shows an unwillingness to give up. In this scene, however, he gave up the minute Mike entered the restaurant. If Chandler had done that in 624, who knows what might have happened.

I'm so tired of it all...

That would provide them with lots of storyline-possibilities, and the gang could finally reunite in the end of season 10.

Or maybe Emma was looking for Gunther...

I can't really remember the moment I noticed it for the first time, but when I look at it now, it seems as if they thought that Emma would take the focus away from her mother's arm.

Yes, that has been obvious ever since 208. Strangely enough, Ross's total lack of respect became even more apparent when she got a great job doing what she really loves. He even seemed relieved that he wouldn't have to worry about her taste in fashion in 321.

No way! I have some self-respect. :) I was probably one of the calmest people there.

It will show some real planning from the producers if she shows up in season 10.

Yep, and it would be fun to find out what happened to him.

Ah, I see. :)

Yes, and they both ended with Monica and the other guy smiling/laughing at his actions.

Or some pyramids in Egypt.

613 TOW Rachel's Sister: Jill: Oh, Mr. Scientist has to get all technical!

No reason, only Chandler made a good impression of him later, and he hasn't spent that much time together with David. He hardly talked to him in 110, which was more than eight years ago, and he never even met him in 711. Obviously, he had met him and talked to him between 922 and 923, but how well can you know a person after a few days?

Maybe she entertains the customers at Lavender Day Spa nowadays. After all, she sang when Rachel was there.

No, she's more used to TV-work on other shows. She's going to be on NBC all summer as a judge on a new talent-show.

Hopefully, he comes before the other Roger (113).

Ah, the glory of take-out or room-service.

Lol. Yep. At least for materialistic girls like Rachel and Madonna.

Exactly. She was so desperate that only Joey could keep her away from the sperm bank. How ironic that seven years later she came dangerously close to going back to that place.

I'm not entirely convinced about that, but maybe it's different in England.

I'm glad you agree, for the final version of this review went up 6 days ago.

Why not?

Nope. I had to reverse it, since Professor Wheeler is not a drunkard.

Well, making a pass at Phoebe might be fun, for us guys. :)

Indeed. Some JnP fans point to Joey kissing Phoebe in 714, forgetting that this was set in S4 - as you said, Monica wore a dress from 401.

Right. Thanks.

Okay, thanks, but that still leaves me wondering what to do with 924.

It goes up tomorrow, and you haven't given me a definite pointer.

Lol, yes. :)

Absolutely, while in 405, Rachel taunted him about marrying only lesbians.

You reckon? I rather doubt that.

And she genuinely shares his appreciation of art & theatre, unlike Mona.

Quite. And I reckon that Kauffman & Crane watch this sort of thing going on (or its lack) which influences their future plotting. Chandler & Monica were supposed to last a few episodes, but their chemistry was amazing.

Quite so, though Rachel was also very good with Ben in that episode.

The purely RnR stories since then have been the following...

722 "TOW the Speeding Ticket"

803 "TOW Rachel Tells..." 813 "TOW All the Baby Names" 818 "TOW the Fake Proposal" 821 "TOW the Temptress" 822 "TOW Rachel is Late" 823 "TOW Rachel Has a Baby (1)"

903 "TOW the Pediatrician" 905 "TOW Judy and Emma" 907 "TOW Ross's Inappropriate Song" 911 "TOW Rachel Goes Back to Work" 913 "TOW Rachel & Emma Move Out"

..they were quite good in 803/823/913, but not so as to compare with 716.

Well of course, I think that Phoebe should end up with Ross.

Grin.

What? <checks> RPGOL!

Now you do. :)

Yep.

That's right, and Joey was so great in the hallway. Very scary.

Yes, but it wasn't like that, it was small but sincere.

I don't dislike him, I'd be quite happy if he married my sister.

I'm just not entertained by him as a sitcom character.

You don't have to.

Exactly.

LOL

ROSS: I don't know what she sees in... innn that goober. And it takes
him, what? Like... like... I don't know, uhh... uhhh, hello...
a... week, to get out a sentence.

CHANDLER: Yeah, it's annoying, isn't it?

ROSS: ... Yeah. (210)

Yew, you're right, but what counts is not what you get, but what you do with it (he said philosophically). CC made her part the centre stage.

Lol, before I got to the end of your sentence I was expecting "Geller".

David was pretty cowed by Phoebe in 110, and he might have stayed in Minsk for eight years because he was afraid of her.

No prizes for guessing who IMHO is least afraid of Phoebe.

Yeah, I totally agree.

Just sit back, put your feet up, and relax, (even if you don't have Cher).

Absolutely.

Gasp, not the real father?

Maybe, but what they should have done is written it into the script with a throwaway line, based on what really happened to the actress.

It's all bound up with item #4 on her con list, "just a waitress".

In high school, Rachel was the prom queen, and the homecoming queen, and the class president; but then she became just a waitress, and Ross could handle that. It was Joey who helped her to follow her dream.

Interestingly, of the first three items, Joey seemed to agree that Rachel is a little spoiled sometimes; but maybe like Chandler in 612 that's okay, because he likes spoiling her - is that right?

It's certainly true that being a little ditzy makes her more suited to Joey than to Ross; while Joey must like her being too into her looks.

On the other hand, #5 "chubby ankles" was Joey's contribution, and one that Rachel took great exception to, blaming it on Ross. Did she ever ever find out that line was Joey's, and if so would it matter?

Of course...

Oh, so the others were letting Matthew Perry sign their bras? ;)

Yep.

All his plugs have fallen out?

Yep.

Exactly.

Maybe, but take another look at Ross's model.

Heh-he!!!

That reminds of when Ross bested Joey in a dating contest in 717 "TOW the Cheap Wedding Dress", by bending the rules with a technicality.

Before that moment, Ross said "technically" six times, Joey said it once.

After that moment, Ross said "technically" once, Joey said it five times.

Good point, but when did Chandler do an impression of David?

Lol, maybe she'll be discovered on one of those CCTV reality shows.

Really? So is that what she's being groomed for?

Oh, she hates that guy!

Yep.

And it goes to show that when I ask these kind of questions, there really is a real answer out there, somewhere. :)

Right.

Quite, but she & Chandler could do worse than rely on their friend.

It's not that he's better known in England, it's that a better measure of fame is how far it has travelled.

That's true, but I still disagree with your theory about Joey & Rachel's future.

I *hated* them in 803. It was one of the worst stories I've ever seen on the show. However, they were enjoyable in 822, 823, 905 and 907, but none of them could hold a candle to 716.

Yeah, that's you in a nutshell, isn't it? ;)

I would have believed him if I hadn't read the spoilers.

It doesn't make any sense that it was so small. First of all, you're supposed to spend a lot of money on an engagement ring in the USA. David obviously had money enough to go to Barbados on a week's notice, so why couldn't he afford a real ring? They sell cheap engagement rings with real diamonds in special engagement ring shops all over the States, so I don't see the problem here.

Weird. I think he's great.

Yes, it is!

But she didn't get the cliffhanger. As usual.

I like Ross. He's not an old geek. :)

Then why did he run to Central Perk the minute he landed in 711 and 922?

Hmmm... That was a tough one.... ;)

Usually I can't wait to see the new episodes in September, but nowadays I couldn't care less. It's so sad that this pathetic finale should be the way to end a mediocre season.

No more beaus for Rachel, please.

Kind of like Joey in 303/304?

Yes.

And Chandler.

He's also critical of her now. He knew she wouldn't be able to baby-proof the apartment in 916, and he knows how crazy she gets around big stars.

That's not too bad.

Who knows. Then again, Rachel has lost a lot of weight since then, so she doesn't have "chubby" ankles right now.

Lol, no. But some girls grabbed him and kissed him.

Yes, and he has finally moved to Aruba and the big lizards.

Maybe it was a pharaoh.

*rolls eyes*

In this episode. The stuttering in the restaurant, remember?

Pardon? What does CCTV have to do with it?

I doubt it. She's on "Last Comic Standing," which has more to do with stand-up comedians.

And yet she still considered to ask him out in the next episode. But she was right. That guy was awful.

Joey? Chandler doesn't want that.

I just find it very odd that it's like that in Britain. When I talked about the two actors with my friends in the UK and Norway, they knew who Rudd was right away, but they had no idea who Azaria was.

I agree... he's a successful scientist and to portray him as an idiot sometimes just doesn't seem to go hand in hand with his profession.

Although I'm a big Mike fan, blondes *do* have more fun.... you never know what she might do when given an opportunity ;)

He would have to fall for Charlie pretty hard to hold her opinion high enough to get over all his insecurities... wouldn't that be sort of rough on Joey to see them so serious... he seemed to be upset when they were just kissing.

They do pair up together quite well....

Phoebe already has 2 men that want to marry her, 3 is just too much to handle! ;)

Americans normally spend about 10% of one year's salary on a woman's engagement ring.. considering Mike is a musician, (and not a well known one I'm assuming since he doesn't seem to have fans who recognize him in public) he probably does not make a huge paycheck. So that 10% doesn't really leave much money for a ring, but a flight to Barbados may have come out of his savings.... any price is right when you are on the verge of losing the person you love.

Haha, I thought that part was hilarious!

Some professional automatically mark you as a geek.... palenatology is definitely one of those professions... although Ross does have his high points also.

I don't think he was afraid of her... science was his life.. he couldn't just give up everything he worked his entire life for. And he considered staying here until his partner and Phoebe convinced him that he had to go.

I agree, I was a bit disappointed with the finale also.

I think Ross just liked knowing that he would have been the money maker for the two of them if things worked out... It made him feel like the man in the relationship, like he could take care of her. Maybe he just didn't want to admit that Rachael may become more successful.

but she *did* get the apartment baby-proofed... it was Joey who couldn't figure out how to *unbaby-proof* it.

I don't think that she is too into her looks... she just wants to present herself nicely to other people when she needs to.... there have ben pleanty of times in the show when she was just laying around and not all glammed up. Nothing wrong with a girl who loves to shop! ;)

She would have still blamed Ross for agreeing with Joey... I don't think she really cared about Joey's opinion so much at the time... she was too upset already.

Yes okay, we're all sorted out now. :)

Ooh, good point, while Rachel leans a little that way herself (though not as much as Monica & Phoebe do).

True, and I'm not denying that Charlie will do the same; what I rather doubt is that she would help Ross with his insecurity.

Right.

Well, according to David Schwimmer on "TeenHollywood", he wants his & JA's characters to get back together - while admitting "I don't think even the writers know how it will end yet. But the thing that would make the most sense to give Friends closure would be for Rachel and Ross to somehow end up back together. But only if it's earned."

Of course, the RnR fans see that as a positive endorsement, but what Schwimmer is saying is that it can easily go the other way, and in fact should do so, if that's what's right. Nothing is inevitable.

Really? I just thought that JA was terrific, and the condoms so funny.

Well, I thought they had no chemistry in 822, though JA was funny; 905 was crap on stilts; and in 907 they were boring boring boring.

RPGOL

Oh, come on Marita, it wasn't that bad.

Okay, so the episode was poor for a finale, but the finale was quite good for an episode. I think maybe your expectations were too high.

Better her than Phoebe!

Exactly so.

Right.

Chandler helped a lot, but OTOH he almost let the side down, since he did not have the courage to quit his own boring job for another six years.

It was Joey who brought the subject up, it was Joey who reminded her that waitressing was supposed to be a temporary job, it was Joey who pointed out that she wanted to work in fashion, it was Joey who came up with the wonderful slogan that she needed "The Fear", and most of all it was Joey who found her a first job in fashion then secured her an interview.

True, but in 916 she buckled in to him, and hired a handyman; while in 920 he buckled in to her, and let her come to the soap opera party.

What didn't happen was a blazing row with Joey shut outside in the rain.

Right. She's a beautiful woman, in fact non-ugly enough to be on TV.

While hiding under a couch in 622, Ross recognised her by those ankles.

And you didn't?

PLEASE note that this is about the *first* part of the finale.

The second part of the finale will not be shown in Britain until next week, so NO SPOILERS PLEASE about what happens in the end!

Charlie is entranced to hear Ross practicing his keynote speech; but due to Chandler borrowing his computer to look at pornographic emails, a virus wipes the hard disc, deleting the speech: and sadly Ross has neither back-ups nor a printout. However, Charlie claims that she can recreate it, so she gives up her time with Joey to help Ross.

Left to his own devices, Joey is joined by Rachel, who has arrived for the second day of Ross's conference. Wandering around to a pharmacists convention, they filch some name tags to get in, and Rachel's tag says "Kate Miller". Joey promptly sticks the tag onto her left breast.

Rachel remarks that was the most sex she will get, so Joey obligingly pats her tag down several times, gives her breast a good swirl around, then pats it some more. While a goofy smile steals onto her face, Joey finishes her breast off properly; then she droops as they go inside.

Ross makes a pyramid out of bath products while Charlie does all the hard work on the speech. He is really impressed; but then as he thanks her, their faces come close, and they have a moment.

However, this new baby they have portraying Emma has very different colouring than the previous one. She used to have dark hair & brown eyes, but now she has light brown hair & blue eyes.

In the past, Joey has said "Days of Our Lives" correctly 22 times, and never wrong once; while the phrase "the days of our lives" has come up three times as part of a normal sentence.

Does this mean that Chandler will end up peeing on someone again?

Kate Miller? This cannot be a coincidence. Was this an in-joke, in which case does anyone have any ideas? Or was it foreshadowing, to label Rachel with the name of Joey's long-lost love from Season 3?

Or did Kate marry a millionaire pharmacist for his money, and she will turn up in a new episode, to wreak havoc for Joey & Rachel?

Was the pat-a-cake scene inspired by the famous out-take from 410 "TOW the Girl From Poughkeepsie", where Joey was patting Monica's left breast, then Chandler burst in to handle her right breast?

In fact, from when that goofy smile sneaks onto her face, was Joey patting Rachel's breast, or was Matt patting Jennifer's breast?

When Ross made his pyramid, did he get his building blocks from the bathroom, or did he have to take them from his suitcase?

If Charlie's fianc was gay, did she lie at the soap opera party?

When Ross & Rachel sighed together, was that the first time that they've been on the same wavelength - while sober - in 7 years?

Chandler & Monica have now been happily together for 120 episodes, and by the second part of the finale, that will be 5 seasons.

How come Chandler & Monica can quite easily talk about science topics to David, yet feign sleep or death when Ross tries to talk to them?

Both David & Monica were right about how a plane flies, though.

Whilst Phoebe first refers to David as "Mike", did you notice that his mug of coffee is *exactly* the same colour as his shirt? It even seems to have the same patterning on it! Well, either that, or David was actually holding an invisible mug of coffee...

Did you notice that the blackboard outside Central Perk still announces "Neighbour Tim", the way it did back in 802?

When Chandler says that he's not very good at advice, and starts going on about pizza toppings; did that remind you of 817 "TOW the Tea Leaves", when he said that he was not great at the advice, and started talking about cheese?

With all those extras at Central Perk & two conferences, was this the episode with the greatest number?

Okay, when Monica leans forward to talk about Mike to Chandler, all the CCA fans are going to blow a gasket! But wasn't it great to see that she cared more for Phoebe's well-being than bitchy Rachel did?

Yet doesn't Phoebe have back-ups to ensure she won't end up alone?

When Monica's hair gets some extra body, isn't she just adorable?

If you're wondering about Roseanne Rosannadanna, she was a character with extremely bushy hair, played by Gilda Radner on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s. Click on http://tinyurl.com/bvw3 for a picture.

PLEASE note that this is about the *first* part of the finale.

The second part of the finale will not be shown in Britain until next week, so NO SPOILERS PLEASE about what happens in the end!

I thought so too, and so of course did Joey: "Everything is upside down here! It rains all day long, nobody watches TV, and Ross is famous!"

But Belphoebe has been at pains to point out (and she's right) that we have only seen Professor Geller through the eyes of his friends & bored first-year students. If you look carefully enough, there is evidence to indicate that he is quite the raconteur of the palaeontology world.

It's a close call, but Ross.

Chandler should not have opened that email, in case something went wrong.

But Ross should at least have printed out his very important speech, and that was whether anything was going to go wrong or not.

It was lower than that, you need to look again.

I didn't say that it was over her nipple, but it was still an intimate area. If you still don't believe me, *you* try doing that...

I guess you would say that; but I reckon that Rachel was enjoying it.

I know!!! Did he not listen to Chandler? For all that he's not known for his good advice, he simply told David to let Phoebe know that he'd be open to marriage - nothing about proposing to her.

I knowww!

For me too. I've explained it later.

Yeah, I agree, I much preferred David. AFAIR, all we guys think this way, while most female fans prefer Mike. Oh well, as an RnP fan I'm quite happy that she chose the suitor who can't substitute for Ross.

According to you, tapping Rachel's shoulder.

At first Emma was played by a human baby, then they switched to using the robot, and now they've gone back to using a human baby again.

And when I say "a human baby", it's actually twins, of course.

I'm afraid that doesn't make me wrong, it makes you unobservant.

What I've been trying to tell you is backed up by reports on various websites, off-screen remarks by the cast, and articles in magazines.

No, for I'm merely speculating. It was Rachel who picked up the Kate Miller badge, and not Charlie. I might have wondered if Charlie's gay fianc heralds trouble for Ross & Phoebe, or Monica's new Latin look means she will ditch Chandler for Joey, or the mirror & heart-shaped bed in Phoebe's room foreshadows David falling in love with Ursula.

What's that got to do with it?

Maybe. I don't come from that sort of family, but it does happen.

Well, it was in a way, since it was all the people for whom he was famous congregating in Barbados that created the event.

He might have networked to a facility at the hotel.

Sure. On our side of the 4th wall it was a story poorly constructed by people who presumably never do this; while on Ross's side of the 4th wall he acted most foolishly, which would not be for the first time.

Don't be silly.

Look at FR923L.JPG - Joey's fingers are about 4 inches across, so the tag extends from about 8 inches, down to about 12 inches below her shoulder.

The tag is only just above her nipple, and when Joey makes a circular motion, you can see the whole breast swirling around under his hand, then big ripples passing through it as he pats her.

Well, there you are then, it was a sexual act.

Does Rachel worry about things like that?

Poor you.

Yep.

He's a tall dark slim hesitant geeky scientist with a very kind heart.

Yeah, Brad wouldn't get upset if you tapped her shoulder.

He was played by Charles & John Allen up to S5, but then from S6 he's only been played by Cole Sprouse. Cole is a twin, but his brother Dylan has never been credited as Ben, probably because he hasn't played him.

Not at all, I put all sorts of stuff in, some of which people take more seriously than in fact it's intended to be.

Well, I asked my question first, did Charlie lie at the party?

The female lead in Harry Potter. Just turned 13 (so beware), very pretty girl, and her untamed hair makes Brooke Shields look like a skinhead.

Sigh. Okay, I'll spoon-feed it to you.

With three guest-stars, this episode had a cast of 9 characters, that is Chandler/Charlie/David/Joey/Mike/Monica/Phoebe/Rachel/Ross, and so I wanted to emphasise that. But also I was struck by how badly David was treated in the end, after all that he'd gone through while apart from Phoebe, as symbolised by the toe he lost to frostbite.

Yet, another of the nine had lost a toe to unrequited love - Chandler had his toe chopped off by Monica in accidental revenge for his shabby treatment of her the year before. So these nine people, whom you would expect to have 90 toes between them, in fact had only 88. Or as one might have extrapolated from the nursery song, 88 little piggies.

If you think about the rhyme, there is actually even more symbolism than that, as related to the plot, but perhaps you've had enough.

Reposted for Sue Jones. Enjoy...

Charlie is entranced to hear Ross practicing his keynote speech; but due to Chandler borrowing his computer to look at pornographic emails, a virus wipes the hard disc, deleting the speech: and sadly Ross has neither back-ups nor a printout. However, Charlie claims that she can recreate it, so she gives up her free time with Joey to help Ross.

But just as she's about to tell him the truth, they're interrupted by Ross, with a hungry Charlie; as she goes with Joey to dinner, Rachel & Ross watch them depart, and sigh in unison.

However, this new baby they have portraying Emma has very different colouring than the previous one. She used to have dark hair & brown eyes, but now she has light brown hair & blue eyes.
