Well, I became exasperated quite some while ago.

813 "TOW Chandler Takes a Bath"

On their first date together, Rachel & Joey had a wonderful time, but what was a romantic game for her, developed into emotional torture for him. As they cuddled up to watch a scary movie, Rachel felt safe in his friendly arms; but Joey feared his desires would destroy that friendship forever.

Next morning, Joey is eating cereal, while listening to his thoughts, who reassure him that everything is normal, she's just his friend Rachel. But as soon as she emerges from her bedroom to warmly greet him, Joey fears that she has become his girlfriend Rachel...

Racked with guilt, and off his food, Joey seeks advice from Chandler, but as he hesitantly tries to explain about breaking the rules of friendship, Chandler fails to understand, and Joey gives up too quickly.

Joey attempts an equally guilt-ridden conversation about these rules with Monica, but before he can explain himself they're interrupted by Phoebe's arrival. Thus when Monica later compares notes with Chandler she cleverly deduces what has happened to Joey, but makes the quite natural mistake of assuming that he's fallen for Phoebe.

Defying Chandler, she warns Phoebe, who's pleased by the news even though she also likes the idea of having Chandler. However, not wanting to risk her friendship with Joey by hurting him, she goes to let him down gently.

But when Phoebe declares she knows everything, Joey starts talking about loving Rachel, who is not just his friend, but his pregnant friend - and she's Ross's ex-wife. Rocked back on her heels, Phoebe informs Joey that he's simply suffering from a crush, which Joey seizes with relief.

Ross & Rachel are discussing baby names, but double their difficulty by not wanting to know which sex it is. They come up with such ridiculous ideas that Phoebe suggests they each get five vetoes. However, they veto so many names that Phoebe thinks "Vito" would sound good!

Ross is trying to convince Rachel that "Ruth" is not an old woman's name when they visit the OB/GYN, whose tests show that everything is fine, and also determine the sex of the baby. Ross insists they don't want to know, then catches Rachel sneaking a peek in the doctor's folder, although she swears she didn't see anything.

Rapidly becoming exasperated with the father of her child, Rachel gives in to his demands, and so agrees to the name "Ruth". Unfortunately Ross becomes ever more paranoid, assuming she knows that the baby is a boy and she's trying to trick him - or maybe the baby's a girl and Rachel really does like "Ruth", so in that case he rejects the name!

After phoning the doctor, Ross tells Rachel they are having a girl, and from her obvious surprise, he realises she never lied to him. Yet though Rachel is delighted by the news, she fervently wishes that the father of her child was somebody other than Ross.

But at least they agree on the name, until Rachel realises their daughter would be "Baby Ruth"! Ross asks for permission to veto, and she agrees.

Monica really enjoys a sensuous bath, but unless Chandler can get in with her, he would rather have a shower; so she draws him a special bath using bath salts & bubble bath, plus candles & music, then sweetly gives him a little plastic Navy ship to make it into a boy bath.

Chandler is pleased to give it a go (even though he'd rather have sex on the balcony), and her idea is a great success. But when Chandler tries drawing his own bath the next day, it is nowhere as good as Monica's.

Monica draws her own bath, but Chandler steals it; and as Monica objects, Phoebe enters the bathroom to complain that she has been misled, for Joey doesn't like her; then Joey arrives to tell the women & Bubbles that it was just a crush; and then Rachel & Ross come to announce it's a girl: so everybody hugs, except for the poor guy with a toy boat over his penis.

In the end, Chandler discovers something better than a sensuous bath, or a bath with Monica; a sensuous bath with Monica - and at least one couple at Bedford & Grove are happy & contented just to be with each other.

Once again, Joey is eating cereal, while listening to his thoughts, who reassure him that everything is normal, it was just a crush. But as soon as Rachel emerges from her bedroom to warmly greet him, Joey knows that he is truly in love with her, and he is in *big* trouble...

This was a cute little piece, with three charming stories, although two of them were part of a larger serial. The odd one out was about the Bings, and though one ought to complain about them being together again, Monica was so delightful, and Chandler so in love with her, that I didn't mind.

Meanwhile, the other two charming stories hid a darker side. The Ross & Rachel story showed signs of a late rewrite: as what should have been an equally frivolous plot, suddenly cast Ross in a bad light, when Rachel's regrets & discontentment began to show through.

But for me Matt LeBlanc, on soaring form this season, stole the show as his crystal clear thoughts contrasted with a fumbling male inability to express his musings out loud; which we guys can identify with. Yet mixed with his growing desperation was a sadness for Phoebe, who equally needs to set her thoughts in order, as this lengthy arc continues on its way.

What is Joey doing up in the mornings? He's not an early riser, is he?

Ah, but neither is Rachel, something else they have in common.

Isn't it cute, the way Rachel calls Joey "Sweetie" these days? The scores so far are Joey 4, Phoebe & Ross 3 each, and Monica & Paolo 1 each.

Did you realise that we have passed the halfway point of the season, and yet the opening title sequence has not been changed? Are there going to be more than 24 episodes this year?

Why didn't we *see* the scene where Joey talked to Monica? Does anyone have a filming report for this episode? Will we see it on the DVD?

When Phoebe was so vague while talking to Joey, did you fear she was going to say that sadly his love was not returned, without mentioning she meant herself, and Joey would think that Rachel had rejected him?

How sweet is Joey? He tries to compile Rachel's faults, but the only item on the list was making him switch to a diet mayonnaise, which he liked.

In 208 "TOW the List", Ross had no difficulty coming up with a damning document - she was kind of ditzy, too into her looks, spoiled, just a waitress, and had chubby ankles. To be fair to Ross, some of those came from his friends; but "just a waitress" didn't, and curiously it was Rachel ceasing to be a waitress that eventually broke them up...

Was Joey telling the truth when he denied that he ever had a crush on Monica? There has been something there, but was that merely lust?

If you are one of the ever-hopeful Joey & Phoebe fans, was this episode a bit of a slap in the face for you? Or do you remain optimistic that he will suddenly fall out of love with Rachel, and turn to Phoebe?

Phoebe is improving. Her suggestions "Phoebe & Phoebo" might sound weird, but aren't they at least an improvement on "Flame Boy" and "Cougar"?

Ross not wanting to know the sex of his baby nicely upheld continuity with 112 "TOW the Dozen Lasagnes", but shouldn't he have learnt his lesson from being the last one to find out?

Phoebe's plan to have 10 vetoes shows she's not just a pretty face, yes?

When Phoebe recalls knowing someone named "Rain", what did she say next? It's missing from the transcript. And was Ross's next idea "Thatcher"?

Did you notice that Rachel cleverly made Ross drop some ideas without using up a veto? By the end, Ross had used up all five of his vetoes (plus a sixth veto with her permission); while Rachel employed only two vetoes, so she finished with the upper hand.

Now Ross is showing himself to be a poor prospect as a father, will this be the cue for Rachel to look upon her roomie in a new light?

In case anyone doesn't know, the problem with "Baby Ruth" is that it resembles "Babe Ruth", the celebrated baseball player for the New York Yankees in the 1920s and 1930s.

If you are one of the ever-hopeful Ross & Rachel fans, was this episode a bit of a slap in the face for you? Or do you remain optimistic that parenthood will conquer all? And what about Mona?

Again, Chandler is not at work - one scene is at 2pm on a Wednesday. What is he up to? Is he on holiday, but Monica cannot leave the restaurant?

What sort of naval vessel is depicted by Chandler's toy?

Why won't Monica let Chandler have sex on the balcony? After all, they wouldn't be as visible as they were in 514 "TOW Everyone Finds Out".

Or is it because she fears that Chandler just wants to beat Fun Bobby's record, and fling her underwear further than the telephone pole?

While "Only Time" by Enya was playing (as Chandler bathed) did you keep thinking you were watching yet another "All New Friends" promo?

There were a *lot* of bubbles in that bath. Had Chandler been playing Sink The Ship With The Undersea Volcano? Boys will know what I mean...

When Chandler quips he's gonna need a bigger boat, did you realise that was a famous quote from "Jaws" after Roy Scheider first gets a look at the shark, and often used to mean "Okay, now we really are in trouble"?

Wasn't Chandler's bath with Monica in 502 "TOW All the Kissing" equally sensuous, with all the bubbles & candles? Or did Monica omit the salt?

What name do you think would suit the baby girl?

I quite like the idea of "Rachel" myself, since it would cause so much confusion. And after all, that would only be fair, for there have been two Chandlers, two Joeys, two Monicas, two Phoebes, and Ross & Russ.

But Ross's original choice, "Emily" in 220 "TOW Old Yeller Dies", does not look very likely these days, does it?

On the other hand, to reject "Ruth" because it's an old-fashioned name seems unwise to me. In ten years' time, that could be just the sort of name to sound fresh, when the other girls have (no-longer) fashionable names. In Britain not so long ago, every other little girl seemed to be named Emma or Sophie, but these days you can't move for Chloes.

And what kind of name is "Stuart" for a boy? That's a last name!

Did you notice that one of Ross's suggestions was "Helen", a name he hated in 102 "TOW the Sonogram at the End". But that was because he assumed the full name would be "Helen Geller", which has unfortunate connotations. So do we assume from this that Ross knows the full name of the baby would be "Helen Green"?

And as for "Vito", that would suggest Vito Corleone, as portrayed by Marlon Brando in "The Godfather"!

Since by the end of the episode they still didn't have a name for the baby, is Phoebe going to have to lock the parents in a closet again; and if so, does that mean the baby will be named "Heckles Green"?

The line "I can't believe it's with you" can realistically either be the kind of throwaway insult used so often when these two are bickering about minutae, or indications of a problem. Some of them appear to be smacked in the face from articles I've read. I dunno; I thought Phoebe's confusion and frustration at not being the crushee was interesting.

Somehow, I suspect that the number of vetos is one of those unimportant details which will later be dropped and considered no issue in actually determining the gender of the baby. What really happened is that the witty script found a way to give Ross the name he wanted and discover the fatal flaw as a an effective tie-up to the story. I'm not sure everybody applies the exacting finality to these little things that you do.

I think you have overstated this. Ross has, once again, annoyed Rachel by being a little anal. Well, she wasn't dating him *before* the baby name argument. I don't see that this shows him to be a bad *father*. Joey will be a whole different issue, which I incidentally think could go either way.

Nope. Delve deeper than that. Babe had a candy bar named after him - "Baby Ruth". It's still very common in the states. It would be like naming her Tootsie Roll.

I think it's very much up in the air. The actress playing Mona is not contracted to continue into another season, so I think she's gone soon.

Actually, that's not right either (although a common misperception...) The Baby Ruth was developed in 1921 and named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter (who later died at the age of twelve).

Curtis's Candy of Chicago [1921-1964] sold Baby Ruth to Standard Brands when they dissolved, then bought by Nabisco, and in 1990, the candy bar was acquired by the Nestle Food Corp.

I agree, although it seems to me that the way Miss Aniston inflects the line shows that her character is regretful. I'm speculating that this sentence was added in a late rewrite, such that when originally written Rachel was delighted to hear it was a girl and nothing else.

I didn't mind the bath story, but I'm afraid it's another to add to the growing number to C&M stories. If they are to have stories together, at least can they be something of real substance.

Yeah, it was a little patchy at points, and I think they dragged the name joke on a bit too long.

I also enjoyed (finally), a bit of C&J interation, which sadly seems to have been missing for a long time.

Assuming he had gone with the booze story, it would appear that everytime he drinks he still might have a tendency to sleep with someone should the opportunity arise. I was thinking of "TOW the flashback" (306?) Where Ross talks about Carol meeting Susan and really hitting it off, although did he say they were having difficulties? That has nothing to do with being a great father. Some fathers are very organized, always have money and are great navigators but are not close with their kids and can't communicate with them. Ross is a great father. I wonder how terrific Ben's life would be if his mother and father lived together. Ben's life will be affected forever because of the divorce. Even if everything is okay between the parents its still nice to have both parents together. Thats why i hope Ross and Rachel get together even though i'd like to see Ross with Phoebe.
