Please read below. Perry's people confirm the British tabloids are full of it..

HOLLYWOOD, May 25, 2000 -- What's been ailing "Friends star Matthew Perry? The flu? A diet? A "serious stomach ailment?" Or liver disease?

The most dire diagnosis comes via a British news tabloid which reports today that the 30-year-old actor has been told he needs a transplant. It is a report that Perry's camp has branded as "completely untrue."

"Contrary to what is being reported as fact in regards to Matthew Perry's health, it is completely untrue that he needs a liver transplant," a statement from Perry's publicist said today. "He has been out of the hospital for a number of days and is feeling much better."

Additionally, an official Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center -- the facility where the Sun claimed Perry had been readmitted -- told Hollywood.com that the star "was not there."

Still, something of a mystery remains surrounding Pery's health.

Stateside supermarket tabloids said Perry's stomach troubles stemmed from a crash diet. In an interview with People magazine on Monday, Perry himself chalked up his troubles to a "serious stomach ailment": "I went into the hospital to be treated for a serious stomach ailment, and fortunately, I'm feeling much better."

According to People, the rumor on the "Friends" set is that Perry has come down with pancreatitis -- an inflamation of the pancreas.

Perry and his five "Friends" co-stars recently inked a $240 million deal to remain with the hit NBC sitcom another two years. Perry also recently escaped unscathed from a weekend car crash in which he ran his Porsche into a Hollywood Hills home to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected in the accident.

Think about being an editor on a British tabloid where exclusive stories sells papers. It's getting on towards the time where the newspaper needs to be sent off to the printers when a story comes in about Mr. Perry's health. The story comes from a reputable source and judging by all the trouble Mr. Perry has had over the past few days may be true. Several phone calls later and some more sources are telling you thesame thing yet Mr. Perry's spokesman refuses to give a comment and so doesn't deny it. So do you run the story with what you've got? You've got no idea if any other newspaper, tabloid or otherwise has got the story, if they've got it and run it while you don't then they get the exclusive, which sells their newspaper. Can you take the risk?

Nope, don't buy it. Any reputable Newspaper would research the story first, rather that go by an "Unreliable" or "Unnamed" source.

No reputable newspaper would ever risk getting sued. I hope he does. I would. That report was a load of slanderous crap that should have the editor and report fired for allowing such a report to be printed.

Old news is no news. Besides, who's to say that the source is unreliable or not.

Thus alienating that newspaper which just happens to be part of a mutlibillion dollar media company that also owns the Fox network. Now wouldn't that be a bright thing to do? Like it or not the press must be kept sweet, they are what keeps you in the public eye after all. If you are popular you get more attention, more viewers, bigger wages and more offers for projects. Some stars even work the press to their advantage by releasing hoax stories themselves just to get into the papers.

No that isn't going to happen and it's going to be interesting to see if they even print a retraction. When you're involved with a newspaper you've got to check your personal feelings at the door.

Unfortunately, the worst he can do at the moment is file a complaint with the Press Complaints Commission - if they find Perry has good reason to be miffed, *then* he can sue if he wants to, but he can't sue before going through the PCC.

That is a load of balls. All reputable newspapers (and other media) print stories that are not completely confirmed, otherwise we'd all be reading and hearing last Friday's news, not today's. Unnamed sources are the most valuable, especially from Hollywood, as often the "unnamed" source is the star or star's agent themselves. In this case it would not be beyond the realms of credibility for Perry's agent to "leak" a story so that it doesn't appear to come from him directly. Medical stories often are reported that way.

And if the original story (which I haven't seen) was couched in terms such as "rumours state", "insiders say" or "allegedly" (HIGNFY!) then the PCC will judge that the story, as Jonathan said, was genuinely believed to be true at the time of printing, is not defamatory (it sounds unlikely that a libel case would have any grounds), and was not denied by the Perry camp if it was put to them, and there will be absolutely no grounds to sue. Tabloid journalists are not stupid, and phrase things in very legal-proof ways whenever possible.

Ah, but what about after the story *was* denied, and they carried on with it anyway? Plus, "no comment" could mean anything - I remember last week I was reading up on a story which was accompanied by the "no comment" normalities of a rumour and so dismissed it as such, but later on it turned out that the spokesperson had just been unavailable for comment at the time, and that it actually *was* true. Now, is it not possible that Perry's spokesperson could have been unavailable for comment at the time because she might have been attempting to contact him for the real story, and as such declined to comment *until* then?

In any case, all the legal technicalities in the world probably won't be able to get the paper out of the fact that they continued on stating the story as fact, long after it was publically denied.

Exactly my point. They ran with the story because "no comment" is not a denial. It might well have been that the story was going to turn out to be true, depending on where it came from. Agents do stall on things like this, and often a stalling is as good as an admission.

(If you knew someone close to you was taking drugs, and I asked you outright if they were, if you weren't expecting the question your answer would probably be "er, um, no, I don't think so." That's as good as an admission, because you weren't prepared enough to say "no, of course not.")

Again, that's different. If it were less sensational, my hunch would be that there is truth in it and they have a good reason to continue (cf Charles and Diana, etc). As it is, it sounds like they were fed duff information from somewhere. I'd be interested to know when Matthew Perry's next round of interviews or public "engagement" is...

I'm not a newspaper expert, that much is obvious, but I do know that some reports in the news stretch the truth a little but not to this magnitude where it involves a person's life at stake. Only the Enquirer would print a story like this.

Now.....based on your comments about unnamed sources and how far a reputable newspaper would go to telling a story, how do you know all of this? Are you a reporter?

Enquirer would probably make it out that he only had a few days to live.

Yes. One or two nitpicky things re the treatment of the eagles, the geography of Europe and so on, but otherwise very impressed at the detail and whole manner of the film. Much less "blokey" than we feared, too.

being a huge fan of Matthew Perry.. I was looking forward to see this.. now it wasn;t bad.. but I guess my expectations were too high I found Three to Tango a lot funnier... but I also have noticed how much they gang have been typecast Matthew is always playing the good guy who's life goes wrong often from events that aren't his own fault.. would you say any of the others have been typecast ?? Gale Weathers and Monica are very different.. IMO.. so maybe CCA isn't..... what about DS, LK, JA and MLB ? there was quite a "Joey" side to MLB's character in Lost in Space.. didn;t he try to make a pass on the guy's daughter.. *lol*

ugh don't see the Pall Bearer with DS it was horrible! The character was a lot like Ross same with Jennifer Aniston in Picture Perfect. But that was a decent movie. Also, Lisa Kudrow in Rommee and Michele's HS Renuion, very type casted. That movie was OK. The Whole Nine Yards was the best I've seen out of all the friends movies, excluding I guess scream.

Oh I have seen the Pallbearer, I agree with you..it was so long and boring to me. But I thought that Rome and Michele's High School Reunion was the best movie by one of the Friends actors. It was actually one of the movies that made me laugh. But I think Matt LeBlanc needs to start looking for better movie roles. His performance in ED was kinda weak considering the plot was also weak.

Two performances that spring to mind as totally different from their Friends Characters are DS in Breast Men (which was passable) and LK in The Opposite of Sex (which is highly recommended).

I've not seen Hanging Up. Really, the only time I've seen Lisa Kudrow *not* play some form of Phoebe was in The Opposite of Sex. She deserved some very positive attention for that film, but overall, I think she's overrated.

The Scream movies are my favorite, too. I loved all three of them...the second one might be my overall favorite though. I loved Jada Pinkett's part in the beginning, and I remember being so shocked when they found Randy. TWNY is definitely in a close second place to the Scream movies, though--I went to see it 3 times in the theater, and I *never* do that.

The other characters were more interesting - a really pompous woman who survived a plane crash and turned that into her whole identity; a doctor who tried to expose the facades people were putting on ... can't remember who else, I saw only part of it.

Thanks, Laurie (and Chris)! That sounds familiar. It's going on my rental list. The "I was in a *plane* crash!" chick was *so* pretentious ... she hadn't really done anything with her life, and decided to focus on that. I liked the way the doctor called her on it, and gently teased a couple for naming their son Tristan ("sounds like a girl's name").

Seems like ages ago that DS was on "The Wonder Years".

er... I don't think so. Analyze This is about a guy in the mob (Robert De Niro) who suffers from a nervous breakdown and starts to see a shrink (Billy Crystal). The shrink is about to marry his girlfriend, a reporter played by Lisa Kudrow. The movie is quite funny and was a rather unexpected success in the USA.

Everybody should like that movie, there's lessons to be learned from it.

There's no difference unless you're talking about the cut US TV version. In the German version the terrorists are European and thy change the names of the two lead bad guys which is stupid since BW writes the names down on his arm.
