In one of the first season eps, Brian is talking to Peter and he suddenly says "oh, hold on a second" and then chases a little horse and cart into the kitchen, and it vanishes into the cupboard, to which Brian says "uhh.... some day." What's this in reference to? I actually manage to 'get' about 60% of the gags that are aimed at the home audience (American shows, commercials etc) but this one escapes me.
What's the tiny horse and coach gag about?

For the original poster, it was the Chuck Wagon dog food ads of the '70s and '80s that this is based on. Saw one once though where the chuck wagon ran into the TV (seen a while back on TV Land as a "Retromercial"), but it must've been a one-shot stint anyway.
My personal odd reference was when they lampooned the Crest toothpaste ads featuring the Crest Cavity Patrol team with Peter having to be one of the cavities!

If you're in the same demographics as Seth Mcfarlane, you'd probably get more. I'm totally a child of a 80's so it's easier to get the jokes. Notice all the 80's pop culture references: Star Wars (Boba Fett), Kool-Aid Man, Diff'rent Strokes, etc.. He also loves musicals I guess, The King & I, My Fair Lady, Cats & so on.

There was an old dog food commercial in the 70's or something, chuckwagon. The waggon with the horse went into the cupboard with the dog running after.
Not sure how old the show's maker is, but I get every joke in the show usually so I'd guess he is in my age group.

Heh, I think I can get that "Surf Side Six" show on some digital channel in my area (Goodlife TV), along with 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye.
