Script Question

Does anyone know the length of a FG Script and whether they use single or Double spacing? Also, does anyone know where a FG shooting script may be obtained?

Union regulations, I believe... Screenwriters Guild? Anyway, the question comes up frequently in any sort of online discussion group about popular (or unpopular) television shows. Somewhere, deep in the recesses of my parents' attic, is a script I wrote for Quantum Leap when I was thirteen when I thought I was *way cool*. ;) (One of our English teachers had actually written a script for Remington Steele years and years ago, and it was turned into an episode. Let's hear it for teachers inspiring impressionable youth.)

Also, due to the potential of lawsuits (e.g., if they rejected your script but used some similar idea later, and you tried to sue), any submitted scripts are thrown away before they ever reach the writers. This happened with a guy I knew who had submitted a script for Star Trek: The Next Generation and swore up and down that they had stolen his entire script for a later episode. (Of course, he hadn't shown any of us the script, and claimed that he had sent them his only copy, so he couldn't prove it to us.)

Still interested in writing something? There's no reason why you can't write a fanscript for Family Guy and post it online for your own (and presumably others) enjoyment. Not sure if that's kosher for this group, but I'm sure you can find a home for it somewhere. There are a lot of fanscripts for the Simpsons; if you're interested in seeing how the format is put together, you can read many of them here:

your point is taken, yet based on an incorrect assumption:

It is true that I am a fan of Family Guy but my interest in the particulars of the script is that of professional writer producing a 'spec script'. A spec script is submitted to a writer's agent as a sample of material which may or may not be sent to the show in question. You are 100% correct in that shows will not accept unsolicited material except from an agent. In most cases, a freelance writer who submits a script to a show through an agent will not see his/her script produced. Rather, scripts are submitted as a way to gain employment on the writing staff of various programs.

BTW, in case anyone was wondering, a typical Family Guy ep. is 54-55 pages, double spaced.

OK then, if you have an agent MAYBE they'll give your script a thought or 2, it's just that every time I hear the standard "script" questions I imedialtly, I assume their a fan wanting to submit a script.

I've read that a spec script should not be for the show in question, because then if they don't employ you, it puts them in a bad legal position to have read your script. So, for instance, to apply for Family Guy you might submit a spec script for the Simpsons.
