In fact I may have heard Cappy do an inadvertant joke circa mid 20th century on a blooper record (c,d. years ago)
"....and down the stretch..." ...uh...no, that was LETTERMAN & Dave the horse caller last year and the year before and the year before....
Here is supposedly an actual blooper <not stolen from a card carrying union writer>
Racetrack Announcer: "We have just received word from the steward that HERATH has been scratched, so be sure and scratch HERATH" <just say "scratch herath" quickly five or 10 times quickly to appreciate the alleged (spoonerism?) pun>
Also: The term "pinch-hit" is rarely utilized now, tho in the mid 20th century fox, especially by the Falstaffian Dizzy Dean it sounded:
"Now pinch-shitting for Early Wynn is Vic Wertz"
