I've been downloading the MPEGs from Craig's server (Thanks Craig!), and have tried a few times to create VCDs using the demo version of Nero. Thusfar, I haven't had any luck. They seem to work, but the discs aren't readable using any of my players (including Inspiron 4100's CD-RW/DVD)
Any suggestions?
I've checked out VCDhelp.com, but didn't see anything I was doing differently.
Craig, have you created VCDs from your files?
There's a 95% chance your player just can't read VCDs if you do everything right. On vcdhelp.com there is a link on the right that says DVD Players; click that and find your player to see people's experience with using it with VCDs (if it ain't on the list, it probably don't work).

Heh.. You need to convert the .avi to mpg. There are a number of ways to do this. TMPGEnc is a good mpg encoder and would be able to convert for you. Conversions usually result in a degrading of picture quality, but if you practice enough you can maintain a good source if you have one.

Are you sure you are not just simulating? Simulation will run the CD-R drive, but with the laser off, hence zero data. Yeah...it is writing. When I check the properties, it says there are 0 bytes on the disk and 0 bytes available. Neither CD-R or CD-RW will work on the laptop (that I burned them with), or the DVD hooked up to my TV. On my standalone DVD player, CD-R's will result in 'no disc', but CD-RW's will show the time, but will not play.
I guess I'll just keep on trying.

This is typical of an improperly closed disk. Do you have the software set to close the disk and not just the session?

Yeah, with Nero, I'm choosing the 'disc at once' option, and closing the disc.
This is really my first time using Nero, but it's pretty similar to others I've used (and had success with) such as EZ CD Creator, Sony CD Extreme, and HP's burning software.
Tried Track At Once? Doesn't Disk At Once require construction of the disk image (track open and close points) by Nero, while track at once lets the drive handle laying down tracks and TOC itself? VCD is at least 2 tracks and should show up as such.
I've had problems with CDRWIN and DAO on Win2k. I get a valid TOC, but the data is crap. Audio CD's sound like static, like what happens when you get the low byte/high bytes reversed. Seems like an ASPI problem.
Nero doesn't work with my burner (Sony CDU920S) despite what it says in the compatibility list (can't determine buffer size) so I haven't had much experience with it.

I haven't tried anything other than VCDs with Nero. Roxio's EZCD came with the laptop, and between that and XP, I've pretty much got all the functionality that (I thought) I needed. It was either upgrade to (a crappy) EZCD Platinum or try out the Nero Demo version.
As previously stated, the CD-RW I tried did show the time on my (set top) DVD player, so it looks like it did write some data.
But to answer your question, no, I haven't tried data CDs with Nero. I'll make sure to give that a shot.
To play a VCD in windows, go into the mpegav folder on the disk. There should be a .dat (200mb or so) file there. Double click it and open it up in Windows Media Player (player2.exe). Each section is sequentially named. To play the disk in a VCD compliant DVD player, stick the disk in and hit play. :)

That's the problem...I can't see any folders on the disk. The properties says that it is both empty and full at the same time, yet no files/folders/etc. And yes, I do have it showing hidden files and folders.
Okay..Paul...you've tried it in a DVD player and it doesn't work...which means, either the burn is fucked, or your player doesn't play VCD's.
To play VCD's with your DVD ROM, go to www.download.com and search for a good VCD player, that'll let you play VCD's... WinDVD is one of the best...
If it still doesn't work...then you must've burnt it wrong.
You can also play VCD's without a DVDROM, just on a CD rom.
