I have eps on VCD but was looking to convert all mpegs to SVCD with TMPGE. Besides the increase in discs needed (2 ep per disc rather than 3) I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and noticed a dramitc increase in the quality with SVCD vs VCD to see if it is worth my time.

Um... it doesn't work that way. You can't pull video quality out of thin air. The extra detail is gone. That's why the file is smaller.

Sorry, I misspoke, the files I was going to convert from were .avi not the vcd mpegs, that wouldn't make sense.

is that AVI as in Divx or as in full quality uncompressed AVI? if it's divx, i would think you wouldn't get any better quality still.
Depends on the resolution and compression format of the AVI. If it's a Divx or MJPEG, or uncompressed, and at a resolution equal to or above 480x480, you should get pretty good results. Other motion-based compression schemes could end up looking worse after the translation. One algorithm may decide that quality is not needed in area X while another may decide that it is not needed in area Y and when you put them both together you've lost quality in both X and Y.
