Why Only Three Fingers?

I have always wondered why the characters in Family Guy (as well as The Simpsons and Futurama) have only three fingers.

This affliction does not seem to effect the King of The Hill crowd.

The simpsons have four fingers not three.

Well, three fingers and a thumb, for a total of four digits. Mickey Mouse only had four digits as well, and I once saw a figure from Disney on how much money had been saved in ink over the past century by those missing fingers. Can't recall what it was right now...

As for The Simpsons and Family Guy, it's quicker and easier to draw only four digits and also helps with making them actual cartoon characters, caricatures of humanity as opposed to accurate descriptions. Four digits doesn't look unusual, though any fewer does (with the exception of South Park, in which hands are almost always covered by mittens, and if not, are just mitten-shaped hands with no discernable fingers--except for the occasional raised middle finger from Craig). Three digits would definitely attract attention, and two digits would give a clawlike appearance (Zoidberg, anyone?).

King of the Hill is a completely different style of animation, and uses fairly realistic characters, buildings, vehicles, etc. In fact, it's almost a regular TV show that has been animated. Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but the particulars of the plot and the direction don't take advantage of the freedom allowed by animation, like the giant bug in a recent Family Guy episode, or Peter turning into the Hulk, or Homer having a giant donut head, etc.

Actually there was a Simpsons episode which goofed on this fact: Where Bart was reading a 'Popular Science' type magazine in which the article stated that by 200 years from then Humans might develop a fifth digit which after reading that Bart says something to the effect of: wow that's freaky man! Its weird how you dont really notice it until something is in reference to it. Like in the "Cape Fear" Simpsons episode, when it shows Sideshow Bob's finger tattoos ("LUV" and "HAT", with a line over the A).
