I couldn't agree more on the perfect synergy of your tied pair. Hell, I've made no secret that Brian is the greatest character in cartoon (if not all of TV) history. Stewie is just a hair behind him, as the first few episodes were weak in their use of him. C'mon, he was the HELPER in getting Peter off in the first episode! SO out-of-character. Meanwhile, with the exception of the "Guess What Word I'm Thinking" bit from ep # 213 ("Road To Rhode Island") I want to empty a service revolver into both Chris & Seth Green anytime he appears. His episodes all blew ("He's Too Sexy For His Fat", "A Picture's Worth $1,000", "The Son Also Draws", etc.) Damn Chris.

Although I think that Family Guy is one of the funniest programs (I have all eps on DVD now), I have never been a Stewie fan. For me, the exclusion of this character would not harm the show too much. Peter is the character that I almost vomit from laughing at. But that is only my opinion.

I agree that Brian should be WAY up there. However, Chris at # 3? BLASPHEMY! Chris had ONE good episode (# 305-"And The Weiner Is") and that was more due to Peter with great lines from Lois, Stewie and especially the Brian line I noted above.

No Stewie?! Are you insane? Stewie is half the show! Stewie is one of the main reasons why the show lasted three years on Fox instead of two (Seth MacFarlane earned an Emmy for Stewie's voice).

I just don't find him funny. Too dramatic for me. I watch it for a laugh, and all of Stewie's sci fi geek stuff (it's the best way I can explain it) bores me. But once again, that is only my opinion. Most people really like the character, and that is cool.

How is this not funny? :-) You don't have to see it my way, but his sci-fi geek stuff isn't what makes him funny. It's his intellect, his hatred for his mother (and the irony of the reasons behind this hatred), and the silly things he says... Everything is so irrational because he has the imagination of a baby and the intellect of an evil Einstein.

Of course you can. He was only in one episode (that I know of) and it was only useful for a few good things:

-The Pope licking Lois' floor and commenting, "Mmm. Lemony."

-Peter:"Chris, what you do in the bathroom is between you and God."

-Seen on the back of their car at Lois & Peter's wedding: "Just Married--To A Protestant Whore"

-And, as mentioned, Stewie's quickly-developed and just as quickly forgotten about turn to religion

Francis is still a Griffin. You asked about your favorite Griffins. And Francis Griffin in one episode was still more exciting than Chris... although after watching a few more episodes, I'm beginning to like Chris more and Meg less.

No need for me to buy...I got 47 of the 49 aired eps on tape from their original Fox airings, and quicky added the 2 I missed (Ready, Willing, and Disabled and To Love and Die in Dixie) from CN, as well as replacing some of my Fox copies w/CN ones just to get the original end credits.

And JPM III: of course you are entitled to believe whatever you want about DVD vs. tape, but I obviously do not agree; I always will prefer the version that has no cut scenes even if it is lower in quality and degrades with time. The original poster is talking about McLuhan's statement that the medium is the message. He is implying that you are putting too much emphasis on the medium over the content.

His argument is that a complete episode on an inferior medium (video tape) is better than your incomplete episodes on a better medium (dvd). However, I side with you in saying that the DVD copies are better.

1. most of the episodes on the DVDs are intact. There is just two or three bits that have been cut out. Furthermore, these bits are downloadable off the Internet and can be burned to digital media (CD or DVDs).

2. Video tapes degrade over time and multiple viewings. After a few years, his complete episodes will look like crap, and eventually be altogether unwatchable. At this point, we will still have our incomplete DVDs, and he will have nothing at all to watch.

3. The decision to bring Family Guy back (in whatever form) will be based on DVD sales. If we all buy DVDs, we make it that much more likely that we will see the further adventures of the Griffins. Episodes taped off the TV will do nothing towards letting Fox or anyone else know that we want more Family Guy.

4. Taping the shows is an illegal infringement of copyright. Buying DVDs is morally and legally better to do than taping episodes.

5. There is at least one case so far of the DVDs adding stuff that wasn't in some of the airings of episodes. The Mister Rogers vs. Stewie bit was aired once, then cut in subsequent airings. The DVDs restored this. Also, there are deleted scenes and the original pilot on the second set. You won't get these on any videotaped episodes.

Right, the copying isn't the crime. It's showing it publicly, trying to profit from it, or otherwise redistributing the taped copy that is violation of copyright. A small gathering of friends is acceptible; a few dozen is not.

The same reason why they legally manufacture guns, automobiles, and anything else that provides an easy way to break the law. In America, we are given every opportunity to break the law. Those who actually do it are, if caught, pursued and (hopefully) punished.

Owning a device that makes a criminal act easier is not a crime, nor is it a foregone conclusion that its only use is to make committing that crime easier.

In some cases and locales, certain devices have been deemed illegal that actually do have other uses simply because they may be used a lot for illegal activities. For example, pipes and bongs can be used for smoking a variety of things that are legal, but they are illegal to sell and possess in many areas. Same with radar detectors. Assault rifles can technically be used for shooting at a range at targets, but they are illegal in many areas. etc.

It's not illegal to tape TV shows, but to answer your question, a VCR can be used to play tapes as well as record and duplicate uncopyrighted material. You can also use it as a really big RF converter. Or a tape rewinder. etc. But again, it's not illegal to record TV shows. This was decided in the 1970s by U.S. courts. They specifically mentioned time-shifting as a legal application, but they really didn't address the issue of people building permanent personal archives of copyrighted material.

But it isn't illegal to tape TV shows. It is only illegal to distribute or display the taped copies or any unapproved derivative works to the public. I'm very familiar with copyright law... :-P

Taping isn't the crime, because the show is made publicly available on public channels. The courts have upheld the right to tape television programs.

Taping the shows for personal use only is not be a copyright violation. Without releasing the fixed creative work to something resembling the public, copyright is not violated. However, the end user license agreement may be violated... This depends on what that agreement actually is, and how accessible it is to the user.

Good post. Now all I want to see is a fourth season of Family Guy. And all the episodes of the first three seasons that I haven't seen yet.

No, you are absolutely correct. Title 17 of the US Code. Copyright law. See the Copyright Act of 1976, also known as the Langham Act (assuming I spelled that right).
