OT: AVI / no sound

I have discs with AVI files of the upright citizens brigade (on CD-R) that I got from someone. The video is playing fine but there is no audio? Does anyone know why this might be happening and is there any way to fix this or is it the discs themselves? I've already downloaded and installed several different multimedia/DivX players (including Windows Media Player 7.1), AVI codecs, etc... and nothing is working. Still no sound. I need help. Thanks

Open Windows Explorer and right-click on one of those AVI files. Choose "Properties", then click on the "Details" tab. Where it says "Audio format" and Video format", it should tell you what codecs were used to make that file, and you can make sure you have the right ones. (These instructions are for Windows 98, I'm assuming other versions aren't too different.)

If you have the codecs, go to Goldwave.com and download the trial version of that program, which is an audio editor. Open one of your AVI files with Goldwave; it will extract the audio portion. Then you can see if you actually have any audio in those AVI files. It's possible the files themselves are faulty.

The person who sent the UCB discs was me. I've spent a couple days troubleshooting and have figured out that the files are fine. However, they cannot be played with the current DivX4 codec available at divx.com, especially if you select "Play DivX3 content with this codec" (or something like that) when you install the DivX4 codec. However, if you install the DivX3 alpha release codec I have, they play just fine.

I will email Fred the DivX 3.1 alpha release codec right now. Fred, keep in mind that you have to follow these steps. (You might not have to do some or any of the reboots, but they can't hurt.)

1) Uninstall the DivX4 codec I sent you. This might be tricky; search through your entire list of installed programs in the Control Panel for anything related to DivX. Also uninstall an item that is just called "(setup) Remove only" if it exist.

• Reboot

• Install the DivX3 alpha release codec I'm about to send you.

• Reboot

• Try to play one of those UCB files; they should work.

6) Now, if you want, install the DivX4 codec I sent you initially. It's a rather good one, so you'll find it useful for other video files, probably. However, elect to *not* play older DivX3 content with it when prompted during its installation. Hopefully, this will leave the DivX3 alpha release codec I sent you intact for the UCB files.

A pain, I know, but there are a bunch of codecs calling themselves DivX, and it's a constantly evolving standard as well.
