Knock yourself out. The sooner huge binaries start showing up in a non-binaries newsgroup, the sooner the group gets shut down.

If you're smart, you'll post the eps to a binaries group, then post that group's name in here. But you do what you think is best.

Ok then, there is this group on my news server alt.binaries.tv.us-sitcoms and there's only 2 posts in it within the last week or so, its a binary group, who wants to start posting what there?? =]

Hey, I just figured that I'd better explain that better. Your IP address is like your name in digits. It doesn't matter if you have a dynamic or static ip, the ISP still knows who owned it at what time. So, If you post to a newsgroup whoever is looking for you (FBI, Mounties, CIA... HA!) just gets your ip address off of your message header, then traces it to see which ISP hosted it. They can then indite... dont know if I spelt that right... your personal information and then go make the arrest.

For an FTP it is the same only a lot easier once someone posts an ip address that the ftp will be using. they get the ip then is the same process as if you posted to a news group.

Come to think of it, why aren't they arresting the Divx, SmR, and Warez posters?

Why would you be indicted? FTPing isn't illegal. Anyway, if you are worried about your IP address showing up, you can go through an anonymizer site and do the FTP from there. Of course, all the anonymizing sites are owned by the government and they just make you think they are free radicals running it. Big brother is watching. Don't forget that message in your alphabits : "OOOOOOoooooo".

By being "indicated" ppl on newsgroups say "goto this site: ip" and then they got you. Your Right FTPing isn't illegal, but If you transfer illegal material on it that is an offence. "Distribution of Stolen Property" in this case. Even if you go through an "anyonymous" site you still have to u/l the files to it from your computer and in doing that they still get your ip. Will they bother to bust you? Probably not. They are more after the ppl who do the origional encode and distribution. Even if they catch those ppl they usually get off easily.

Most ISPs certainly don't want you hosting an FTP server, or a web server, but I believe spectre was referring to going to a site to download from an FTP server and was worried about someone grabbing his IP address. It certainly is not generally illegal to download something from an FTP site, nor should it be against any TOS agreement. In fact, I don't think it is even illegal to FTP copyrighted material. It is just illegal to have it on your computer. (why you would download it but not keep it on your computer is a good question indeed)

oh yah... but still the FTP thing holds true. It is not so much the fact u are running an FTP it is the distribution of copyright material.
