The movie wasn't that good

It had some good gags, but a lot of them fell flat or just went on too long.

I've been on the net and Usenet since 95... Not since the dawn of the technology I know, but 10 years is quite a long time... This whole top post thing was NEVER an issue 'till about 3 or so years ago. I don't know where it came from but it's bunk. Especially if the reply is only a few lines.

I've been on Usenet since '89 (HA!) and it's always been an issue, but it got particularly bad in the mid 90's when Outlook Express started shipping with Windows and apparently defaulted to top-posting. AOL starting to offer "real" internet access didn't help matters either.

I'm an edit-and-bottom-post person, because top posting doesn't do a very good job of isolating the points you are responding to. To me, the most annoying thing about top-posters is that they rarely trim off old material in long threads, so you end up with a 287 line post with one new line of text all because several top-posters were too freaking lazy to take 5 seconds to highlight the whole block and tap Backspace. Either that or they are just too ignorant to realize that 261 lines of text have piled up offscreen below what they just inserted.

If that one or two line post is the last reply to the message, fine. But if it's an outgoing thread, it's better to bottom post. Given that, there's no real sure fire way to predict if your one or two line post will be the last post in the thread.

I had never really thought about that and used to top post; but I guess I'm gonna change that from now on. ;)

One big clue that bottom posting the "way it's supposed to be" is that most of the respected *dedicated* newsreader program are designed to bottom post. The programs that were written to READ NEWSGROUPS are designed to bottom post. Why? Because that's the best way to follow threads.

Common sense should dictate how someone posts. If you aren't responding to particular points, snip the quoted text - if you can navigate the threads in your newsreader, quoted text in a reply is irrelevent unless you're replying to particular points. All the whining about top posting is kind of ridiculous because if you're one who actually *knows* you aren't supposed to top post, I'll wager you know enough to be able to follow a thread regardless of where replies are entered.

To me, top-posting isn't a big deal except that it invites obnoxious flames from the "I'm a hard-core net dork and I take my Usenet protocol very seriously" set - as much fun as the occasional flame war can be, I'd just as soon be on OT most of the time. Oblivious top-posting or having a WebTV address is like showing up at a metal show in pressed khakis and a bowtie. I never see NG regulars get bothered for the occasional top post if it's in a reasonable context.

In other words, drop into a newsgroup acting and talking like a newb, you'll get treated like one by the keyboard hardasses.
