Because...lets face it...AOL sucks..
AOL people often cause problems -- no offense to you. Typically AOL users can be pretty young or inexperienced and in some channels they get tired of dealing with people like that over and over. It's the same reason some clubs have bouncers and dress codes. You might feel offended, but it's part of the culture so you just have to get used to it.

Yeah well maybe someone should inform you Americans that ISP's in this country suck big time & AOL is probably one of the better ones in this country (that's England BTW)!
Let me explain:
Over here until fairly recently the ONLY ISP's offering FREE net phone calls were either fly by nights or it was first come first served limited to first 1000 people to sign up!
After running up HUGE phone bills coz it cost me 1p per min i was on the net, i signed up with a couple of fly by nights, then Freeserve wouldn't let me get their 24/7 free net phone calls offer, so i had to try AOL coz they were affordable to me, �15 per month for 24/7 FREE net phone calls!
So, no more losing my money on fly by nights & no more running up HUGE phone bills!
Sure i miss using a proper newsagent thingy but i can now AFFORD to go on the net for more than an hour a day! :o)
AOL gets me online without costing me an arm & a leg & that's all i care about, i am not as snobbish as you Americans to look down my nose at the name of the ISP, i don't care about the name of the ISP i use, all i care about is that i can afford it & that i CAN get online!

AOL DOES offer a cheap service...but what you must remember is that so does most of the other ISP's in the UK, which came up with the �15 a month thingy first. AOL is meant for people with families, small children, kids and newbies...not for hardcore or normal net users. It's designed for people who haven't got a clue about computers or the internet, not people who know what they're doing, and a lot of people who apply to newsgroups.
They also do make great coasters. If you're like this in real life and on IRC...no wonder they banned you.

No it ain't, there plenty of unmetered ISPs in the uk, theres also unmetered local calls now as well. Least 100% of uk exchanges are digital and most people can get at least 40k from the phoneline.

I pay $20 a month for the line & local free calls, including taxes. The local calling area is about a 20 mile radius. Roughly another 20 miles outside that is the "extended" local area where it's a flat $0.25 per call. Outside that it's in-state long distance, and then national long distance, the per-minute charges varying depending on what long distance company you choose (there are about 5 big ones in the US). I'm on Qwest, which is $0.11/min in-state, $.05-.07/min out of state depending on time of week. There are no account maintenance fees for my LD plan. Monthly cost is based solely on usage. There are various federal and state taxes that get applied when making LD calls.
I pay on average about $27 a month for phone service, total, but what you pay varies widely with locale in the US, except with state-to-state long distance. AFAIK, that is national pricing.
What do you guys typically pay in the UK? If you pay by the minute for local calls, I'd expect a much lower monthly maintenance fee.
