KaZaA/Weinstein episode

<rant> Okay folks, if you've got the Weinstein episode, why not use KaZaA to share it? It's not as if people downloading from you will cut into *your* *downloading* speed, right? If you have a problem with spyware (as I do), then get KaZaA Lite. It takes all of 10 minutes max to set up. As for being paranoid, I've got a software firewall to handle unauthorized outgoing traffic and my router with NAT handles the unauthorized inbound stuff. I take security seriously, and I still would share it. (If I had it.) All KaZaA needs is port 1214...and it's a measly 1MB or so file to download.

I can't believe that of all the hundreds of people who supposedly just got the genuine file, none can use KaZaA...you got it for free from someone who took the time to share it, don't you think you have a slight responsibility to do the same? And why is it that I can never find anyone who's sharing it on KaZaA when they claim to be? Shouldn't it at least appear in my search even if they are maxed out with people downloading it? </rant>

I can't believe that someone that takes security so seriously doesn't know how to use IRC, connect to #FAMILYGUY on EFNET and request the episode from one of the bots. All you need to do is connect to the group, and type "/msg panicDCC1 xdcc send #8" and it will download away. I got mine at almost 100 k/s. Great episode! - n8

Well, taking security seriously doesn't automatically mean anything about IRC, does it? fwiw, IRC isn't that safe is what I've heard. I'll give it a shot...never used it because I never got around to needing it for anything. Hell, I just started using KaZaA because of this Weinstein episode. What port(s) do I need to open? (I have all ports closed by default and only open the ones I know I need, such as 80 for web browsing, 25 for sending email, etc.) Also, I've had problems with getting things to work with NAT in the past, such as MSN Messenger's file transfer, which is documented by MS as not being compatible with NAT...

Assuming you just have a standard NAT setup, you don't need to open any. Just connect to an EFNet IRC server on port 6667 (the default) - this should just work through the NAT.

For DCC file transfer, the sender needs to have a port open - since you will be the receiver, you don't need to do anything so it should just work.

Well, it looks like at least port 6667 needs to be opened...

I'm not saying you're wrong, just showing you what I found. I can't implement the instructions given by this site because my router does not have the required options. Anyway, I did manage to find someone (fingereleven) on KaZaA that has the big Weinstein file finally and am currently getting the file. 210MB down and about 30MB to go. My shared file should be ready for download by others soon, assuming they can connect to the same KaZaA Supernode.

Thanks a bunch! I just finished burning to VCD using Nero Express. Man, that Express thing makes things so easy. I heard I should burn Track-at-Once, so that's the only thing I did that wasn't obvious. Nero complained about having to re-encode it, but it did in a few minutes and all is fine.

As for those people who gave up, maybe they didn't. There is a chance they were simultaneously downloading it from other users and didn't need to get it all from you. This is noted on the KaZaA site. I had to get it all from you because I couldn't find anyone else. I still have no one downloading it from me...maybe I have to do something with my firewall and router... :-(

Exactly. It's really not that easy unless you've already been using it. And if you have a router and are using NAT, configuration can get complicated...

Actually it does - if your upstream is saturated, the ACK packets for your downloads get queued up and it can reduce your downloading speed by as much as 50%. Of course this can be fixed by setting a cap on your upload speed to about 5 KB/sec below the speed of your connection, but not all p2p software lets you do this.

I think kazaa is split up into mini "segments", so when you connect you get connected to a certain segment with say 1000 users on it, and any searches will only return results from that segment.

I believe it's a lot more than 50%. When I'm updating my website with CuteFTP, and it sucks all my upload bandwidth, I can barely even surf the web with my DSL (768/128), because of the reason you said.

Just to be clear (from KaZaA.com):

What is a Supernode? Any computer using KaZaA Media Desktop can become a Supernode if they have a modern computer and are accessing the Internet with a broadband connection. Being a Supernode does not affect your performance noticeably. Other KaZaA users in your neighbourhood, will automatically upload to your machine a small list of files they are sharing whenever possible using the same Internet service provider or located in the same region as you. When they search they send the search request to you as a Supernode. The actual download will be directly from the computer who is sharing the file, not from you. The download goes from them to the person who wants it, peer-to-peer.

Is it harmful for my computer to be a Supernode? No. Being a Supernode helps other users. Other computers connect to you, and your computer does the searching for them. Your Supernode communicates with other Supernodes worldwide to help other members search KaZaA. The amount of CPU resources that can be used by a Supernode is limited to 10% of the total CPU power available - you will in general not even notice if your computer is functioning as a Supernode.

I'll put my money where my mouth is. Thanks to others, I got the episode (large 230MB+ version) and burned to VCD. So no, I don't have a copy of the original tape, so there will be some artifacting since it's a VCD.

I will gladly make copies onto VHS or VCD for anyone who asks for these low fees (yes, this *includes* shipping in the USA, though maybe more for Alaska & Hawaii):

Yeah actually it does, that's why I don't share music on Kazaa (which takes me a half hour to get just one song even without someone downloading). If I were on cable, I'd be a sharing fool!
