Ok, I haven't seen Baby Bob and probably won't bother watching an episode--it just looks really bad.
But why is it that two shows can have a baby talking in adult thoughts and ideas and one of them is really funny (Stewie) and the other is just plain bad?

You just need to observe that the previews will show what the producers think are the best jokes of the show and then downgrade your opinion from there.
Case in point, recall the previews for "Bob Patterson"? Or "Inside Schwartz". Or "Cursed".

This is sometimes the case, but other times they show the lowest common denominator jokes they can find, like somebody farting or falling down the stairs etc, and for all we know the rest of the show might be really intelligent and witty except for a couple of these token crude moments. But then again I don't plan on watching Baby Bob...I will check out Andy Richter tomorrow though.

A good example is Undeclared, which I consider to be a pretty decent show. The previews before it aired its premiere sucked.

Actually, I didn't. When FG first started, FOX had just expanded their line of cartoons. Futurama was fine, but I felt blindsided by King of the Hill. It was terrible.
When I saw advertisements for another cartoon, this one with the word "Family" right in the title, I just wrote it off as another KotH.
It wasn't until I accidently caught an episode at the tail end of its first run that I recognized that the show was great.
But, it's very rare for me that a preview of a show makes the program look bad when it actually turns out to be good.
BTW, I did watch Baby Bob last night anyway. It was not as awful as I expected, but it wasn't particularly good. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 10--slightly below par for sitcom writers. I stick by my prediction of six episodes.

That's really a stretch. Never in it's three season history has Family Guy said "Oh look I'm using a portable phone!" or made stupid Wang Chung references.
