Moments like this episode's discussion of Brian's despair, and Quagmire's extended verbal evisceration of Brian a few months back, make me wonder.)
Partially, yes, but this episode was an attempt to be serious and dramatic. It was his version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe and similar highly dramatic stage plays. Did you notice there was no music? It was all about the acting. Emotional highs and lows.
As for the horrible disgusting parts (Damn you MacFarlane...) I think that was just an attempt to go even further than they ever have before in that direction. Also, it might be a setup for some stuff that could show up in later episodes.
Also the dramatic parts speaks to many people in this "day and age", as they say. These are very depressing times. Just look at the number of commercials we see now for anti-depressants. Not to mention all the other drugs. I've been around less than 50 years still but even in my lifetime this world has totally gone to shit. Technology, and the amount we have to work to get it (and constantly update it!), is no replacement for freedom and a simple life. We're all feeling the stress these days and I think they wanted to address it a bit in this episode.
