Doesn't have to be the person they're with at the moment. Plenty of gay people have been with normal people. But if you've gayed it up in the past, chances are you're still gay now. And yes, Katie Holmes is insane.

I'd say it could possibly have been a slight through inconsideration. Everyone is normal in some way, and everyone is abnormal in some way. For example, most people on the planet do not live in America, therefore living in America is not the norm for human beings, which means that everyone who does live in America is abnormal in that respect.

In the same way, geniuses are abnormal because they do not have IQs in the normal range. We can see by these examples that the word "normal" need not be a social value judgment.

Homosexuality is not "normal", because a deviation from the norm. That does not mean that homosexuality is bad or wrong or that homosexual people have anything wrong with them, it just means that most people are not homosexual. It is also true that most people are not geniuses, but that doesn't mean that having a high IQ is something to be ashamed of.

However, the popular connotation of "normal" vs. "abnormal" is that normal is good and abnormal is bad, wrong or sub-par. The word "exceptional" or "extraordinary" could often be substituted and have the same objective meaning as "abnormal," but the connotation would usually be the opposite.

Therefore, to insinuate that someone is not normal can be misleading unless you intend to insult them.

It would be advisable to *ask* DR if he meant his comment as a put-down of gay people before you accuse him of showing hatred... unless DR has a history of anti-gay comments.
