Cancelled UK order for season 2, looks like this one might have commentary and include season 1 + 2.

Yes, we've already established that. Family Guy Box 1 Season 1 and part of season 2......and Box 2 will have the rest of season 2 and season 3. Some eps have commentary.

Why don't they all have commentaries, a la The Simpsons sets? Actually, when the Simpsons sets eventually make it up to season ten or so on DVD, will they even keep doing commentaries on each episode?

Um.......the only thing Fox ever cut was the JFK Pez gag (which was put back in when re-run), the Mr Rogers teaser (which was put back in in re-run), the fag joke from "One if by Clam", and the George W. Bush card from "Brian Wallows"

There may be other examples, such as the Osama bit mentioned, but I know FOX cut off the Stewie-David Banner spoof at the end of an episode once...

that was one of the funniest things the ending one was funnier how they superimposed Stewie into the actual footage from the show

Yes, that part. Networks don't usually say why they chop a show, but my guess is that they wanted to run promos for other shows instead. You see this happening fairly often across all major networks, the practice of cutting the last sequence.

Here's a question: Will the new R1 DVDs be better quality than the R2?

I've been attempting to encode my R2 DVDs into DivX 5.02 with HORRIBLE results. There is tons of noise and visual artifacts all over each episode. I guess it's a result of the NTSC to PAL conversion/mastering process.

Anyone know (and I know this is early) if the R1 set will be better quality than that released in the UK? Here's hoping.

There's nothing wrong with the quality of the R2 set. They play like any other DVD for me.

DivX is a quality-reducing factor itself. It is a lossy compression scheme, even if it is not as bad as others that are popular.

Are you playing this on a PAL TV? If so, you may get better results. However, I can assure you that the quality of this DVD on my system (using PowerDVD) is terrible. I think it probably has to do with the NTSC to PAL mastering process. There is noise and visual artifacts everywhere.

Check out the forums over at Doom9.net. Use "Family Guy" as a search term and see what you find.

Since it plays nice and clear for me, I figure it can't be in the mastering. But there is a huge variation in how various pieces of equipment can handle the conversions. That's a funny site. They have their frames screwed up on their front page. (Now there's a mastering problem.)

I found that people there don't seem to care about lip synch, so why should they even notice whether there are video artifacts or not?

Seems like it's a lot easier to just get a system that plays the discs properly. Last time I hung out at alt.video.dvd they were talking about a player that did beautiful PAL-to-NTSC conversions for $70 or so.

Thanks for the advice. It would sure save me time encoding all of these movies. Although on a side note, I did get the Futurama Seasons 1 & 2 box set to actually look better than the original source (encoding with Nic's WimEnc WM9 Encoder and some post-processing filters).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will say that the Family Guy DVD doesn't look the _greatest_ using this DVD Player (i.e., you can tell it's a NTSC to PAL conversion), but it is acceptable. It's nice to be able to watch it on my TV rather than my computer.

Thanks for the tip, Kimba -- I really appreciate it. I had no idea that you could watch PAL DVDs on an NTCS TV. You just saved me about 60 hours of conversion work.
