Phew! It's back on.

Yup. They showed The Lab Rat last week, and I'm currently watching Pinch Sitter... :)

I wish they'd run some season 1 and 2 episodes here in the US. I still haven't got to see them all. In the US we're seven episodes into season 5 and I think every season 5 episode has been run 10 times already, but nothing older since the weekend marathon just before season 5 started.

I have taped all of Season 5 up to this point. I have probably watched each episode ten times for every one aired on MTV.

I do have to agree that it's nice having new episodes..

Unfortunately we in the US are now in the long drought.

The infamous 'mid-season break'.

No more new episodes until early or mid summer.

I just thought of something...

When Season 5 ends, and the second Daria movie has finally been shown in the US, all of the US fans will be out in the cold.

MTV will casually drop Daria from the schedule and that will be that.

No more Daria for the US fans unless we taped it.

It seems that overseas, Daria will always run forever.

Hell! If it comes to that I might have to move!

Has anyone heard anything about possible syndication of Daria episodes? Surely, with all the cable channels here in the US showing reruns of old shows there's a place for Daria somewhere.

Anyone with inside information?

Haven't heard anything concrete, but it does seem like a possibility, given their success in syndicating "The Real World". However, the syndication of "Celebrity Deathmatch" to UPN was a dismal failure -- IIRC, it lasted only 2 or 3 episodes before UPN yanked it.

DVD's are great long term storage, but how do you let the rest of the world know what a great show Daria is?

Especially after the shows final season and movie has run on MTV.

MTV will cease running the show, like Beavis and Butthead, and the only way you'll see Daria is on DVD, or on the tapes you created.

The hardcore Daria fans will have the DVD but it won't bring in any new fans, unless the show runs in syndication.

That's what saved movies like 'The Wizard Of Oz' and 'It's A Wonderful Life' from the 20th century cultural scrap heap.

You can't tell everyone to buy the DVD if they have never seen the show before.

I guess I could invite people over and try to evangelize 'Our Lady of Dryer Wit' , but I can't invite the entire world into my house.

The point I was trying to make is that the Daria fans overseas still get to see the show in constant rotation.

The US fans do not have this option.

And it would be reeeeeeeall nice if that happens.

The more people like and watch the show, the more reason MTV/VIACOM will release the DVD in the first place.

It's all about the bottom line, unfortunately.

Judging from the infamous errors in the other direction, such as in the "Zero Wing" game, much of Daria's irony would be incomprehensible in Japanese.

Well they like shows which star girls with attitude, though I can't think of any cynical type ones offhand.

I'm afraid the opacity of your comment has defeated me (or, "eh?"). I suppose I ought to work on an Urashima Keitaru impression, he seems like he'd make a good role model now that Channel 4 have stopped showing Futurama. Having read 1600 pages of Love Hina manga over the last month I think I know him pretty well by now. Sorry this probably means nothing at all to most people, heh heh....

I'm no expert on B&B. I've probably watched less than an hour of it in my life, and never a full episode.

But I do remember how controversial the vulgarity on the show was.

Maybe MTV won't show B&B because they can't get advertisers for it?

I don't think that would apply to Daria.

I don't know that this is the case - but does anyone know WHY MTV won't show B&B any more?

My guess is, they showed it over and over and ran it into the ground. They have lots of newer programming that hasn't been run into the ground yet. If B&B still got large enough ratings they might have kept showing it.

That's what I'm afraid of. It doesn't seem like MTV is enjoying success in syndicating it's other programs. Hey, I wish they would syndicate Daria. I personally think this is less likely than a VHS/DVD release...let's face it: MTV is already a cult. Daria is a cult fetish within a cult. In terms of mainstream interest...I don't see it happening. This is not a program that would appeal to the "Survivor" fans of the world.

Like most really good stuff, the rest of the world, in the main, would be unmoved if they knew, IMHO.

So we'd better get on making sure it's preserved.

Quite by accident, in the case of the latter. Maybe, if it exists in DVD, it'll become hip in a generation or so. I'm also figuring that the old syndication/broadcasting models will evaporate by the time my kid is ready to buy a car, and that we'll all be niche market inhabitants for whatever digitized stuff comes down the big pipline...like DVD Daria episodes (on pay-per-view, natch).

I don't want to tell everyone to buy it -- I want to ask MTV to make it available for Daria fans. How many of us are there, anyway? Look, cable is at 85 percent market penetration. Everyone who wanted to get to know Daria has had four seasons to do it.

I'd be fun to try, though.

The VHS release of Daria eps seems to be happening in other markets however. If you have been following this ng over the past couple of days you've noticed that there are already 3 new Daria tapes being released in the UK and one is now available in Australia.

I do think the reason why we are seeing it happen overseas and not in the US is BECAUSE Daria is in constant rotation and has therefore garnered enough of an audience that the powers-that-be have decided to release some episodes on VHS.

It's really a moot point. I do agree that DVDaria might be the only thing we'll ever get out MTV in regards to keeping our favorite show alive for posterity

HA! I used to watch Daria.up to about Season 3 or so. Then MTV started to play the 'shell game' in regards to when Daria would air

After awhile, life and work, stopped me from watching or caring about the series.

Cut to about a year and a half later.

Last summer, I happened to be flipping through the stations and 'Dye, Dye My Darling' had just begun. Since it was during those special times when you literally have nothing to do, I sat down and watched the show.

Can you say hooked...

In conclusion, all I'm saying is that MTV did a lousy job in promoting show. If they did like they were supposed to maybe Daria would have had a much larger audience than it does now.

And we wouldn't have to be begging MTV to do something that would have taken care of itself. I mean if the show were aired on a more consistent basis, the audience would have been there and DVDaria would've been released without a petition

I'm sure in a parallel universe 'Daria' is the one of the most popular shows on televison, Steve Jobs is standing before the DOJ on monopoly charges, and our alternates are saying that Daria should be put out of it's misery because the show 'jumped the shark' about three years ago.

Maybe not. Remember that it wasn't too many decades ago that (in the US) there were only three major networks, no cable, no VCRs, no DVDs, and only the merest handful of shows were rerun (at weird hours) after being cancelled.

I think we'll see more choices as technology marches on. Full episodes (legally) available on the Internet, for example. Or advanced DVD technology may make entire old series routinely available at a cheap price. Or even more cable channels showing "classic" TV. Or maybe something I can't even imagine.

I don't think the old Daria seasons will disappear for all time.
