Maybe it's because of the way this holiday is celebrated in certain corners, with chocolate eggs and sugar bunnies and not a thought as to what happened a long time ago and what it's meant since then. And I'm not even religious.

Maybe it's because I'm on my 8th straight week of work with no end in sight and haven't spent any time in the sun in a month of Sundays. If I become allergic to garlic also just shoot me.

Maybe it's because the mutant pigs are off from school all the coming week and the wife has declared that this is a great time to start the spring cleaning seeing as she will be working late all week and I can look forward to the sleep deprivation hallucinations kicking in about Thursday. Oh well, the mutant pigs put their fingerprints all over the walls, they can bloody well wash them off.

Maybe it's because I'm suffering from Daria withdrawl as the last new episode I saw was almost completely unwatchable due to a character that I can only dream of being taken outside and shot repeatedly until that fingernail-on-the-blackboard voice is finally out of my head. Happiness is a belt fed weapon.

Maybe it's because nary a mind-altering chemical has passed my mouth or lungs in such a long time that the edges of reality are becoming sharper and sharper and I'm out of brainband-aids. Maybe the Sihk(sp?) owned quick stop store will be open this a.m. and I'll treat myself to a shot or two or three of scotch. Most likely not.

But to tell the truth and you have to at least to yourself because if you don't you'll find yourself on the path to madness it's because I've spent part of the night ordering stuff I think I want over the net to make up for the fact that my wife and kids spaced that yesterday was my birthday and I got nothing and I'm feeling really sorry for myself and hating myself for feeling this way.

The only thing I know for sure is that it can't get any worse, it can only get better as the only direction I can dig in from here is up.

Asking for your forgiveness for this pathetic rant coming to you from the center of the earth.

Ah yes! I understand the feeling--from a somewhat different perspective. Beguiled by the warm Tennessee spring day, I don't feel like doing much of anything. Just sitting outside and luxuriating in the warmth of the bright sunshine, the sensation of balmy breezes caressing the skin, imparts a delicious languor. I decided to pull the Corvair out and see if it'll start. ("That's not a car, it's a time machine.") Put the top down, ("Bonus points for convertibles.") take it out on the road and revel in 164 cubic-inches of 35- year-old turbo-supercharged torque. A guy on the Interstate ("Wear scarf to prevent convertible hair" -- forget it, there are some things I just won't do.) in a Volvo, after maneuvering around to view all sides, gave me the "Thumbs-up" sign. One of the advantages of driving a "Corvair-sation" piece. The best such incident I remember, one I never tire of boring people with, some years ago, cruising through the streets of Boone, NC, passing through heading home from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Boone is, of course, a college town (Appalachian State University) and so there were college kids standing on the street, hanging out. On one corner a gaggle of girls, a flock of females, whatever, were standing. One of them noticed the car, nudged one of her friends and pointed. Her friend took one look, half-doubled over and SCREAMED! Made all the restoration work I'd done on it worth while. The only thing better than the self-satisfaction of a job well done is approbation from the distaff side.

I think I'll go outside and catch some rays now. Yeah, life is good. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

LOL.

Actually, my Easter wasn't all that bad. Got ready for church to "[address]". Found myself grinning at the scenes I like best. Mom came into room and actually got into a little of the ep. Sunday Mass was nice -- the sermon was especially interesting. Actually sang along to the hymns, which was fun considering that (a.) the songs were nice and cheery and (b.) I like to sing. Had a little breakfast at this one place that served up good flour tortillas but that also had some of the greasiest carne guisada I've ever tasted (the potato & egg was good though). Got a chance to change (was wearing an uncomfortably warm black jacket, a beige top, and some black dress pants) into jeans and a shirt. Went to my dad's mom's (am NOT going to call her "grandma" -- she didn't raise Dad) and saw a bunch of relatives. Not as much drinking going on as usual, but then again we came/went rather early. Found out one of my cousins is getting married. Saw a whole bunch of kids playing; made me feel very old. Quickly ate some barbecue, rice, beans, and cucumber slices, then reached for my "take with food" pain medication (stomach problems). Ate watermelon for the first time in a long time. Got home, quickly dressed into pajamas. Got VCR ready for the VH-1 "Duran Duran Behind the Music". Recorded and squealed incessantly. Flipped channels for about an hour. Came back for the replay of the DD "BTM" and squealed again. Took medication, laid down, took out Walkman and listened to music for an hour in the dark of my room, put Walkman down, and fell asleep.

Was VERY good, now that I think about it. Even though I had to fight the mosquitoes over at my dad's mom's, and even though it was sunnier than I'd have liked it to be (only like sunshine when I'm in the relative safety of indoor habitation).

That's one of the things I miss most about America - eating out. It's so cheap & convenient that eating out for breakfast is a viable option, we would all pile into a local cafe for a late breakfast, or else send someone out to the corner shop to bring back bagels and giant paper cups full of delicious coffee. Although it is possible to find good coffee in the UK these days, you have to choose your outlet with care. All the burger places sell diabolical coffee for instance, and the prices are always crippling and no cafe would dream of giving you a free refill.

I do that, music sounds much better when you're lying in bed in the dark. (though I wouldn't be listening to Duran Duran (have you seen the film "Barbarella" BTW?), I'm more likely to be listening to Buffalo Tom or Bjork.)(Actually I have the video of a track from Wedding Album somewhere, I liked that track, I forget what it was called, it had a girl in a silly long white hat).

Wow. I didn't know it was that bad. Although I should've suspected after I could but choke down the price of the Burger King breakfast I had one time, as well as the meal itself (only ended up eating less than 1/2 the thing before I gave up and threw it away -- greasy egg, interesting taste on the sausage (like it was cooked to medium rare or something), KETCHUP (eeew, am NOT going there), overly greasy hash browns -- only thing I really liked was the orange juice). I think if I stayed in England long enough and were relegated to eating just Burger King breakfasts, I'd be as thin as Alli...no, wait, no way that could happen....

But bagels are good. DAMN good. I missed them. They're so great to eat as a substitute for regular bread. And American coffee is good too. Although I did see some Starbucks in London...YAY! I feel so at home there. Hope the brews and treats are just as good there. Except -- I didn't notice if they had one of my favorites, blueberry muffins. Hm....

(a.) Yes, I've seen "Barbarella". Forced it down once. Only saw it because of the character Dr. Duran Duran. Would've never touched it otherwise. (b.) Bjork! How cuuuute. What was the name of the song she contributed to the "Tank Girl" soundtrack? That's my favorite from her, song-wise and video-wise. (c.) You're talking about "Ordinary World". I kinda liked the hat. The sleeves on the dress were kinda freaky though. The video as a whole is beautiful. Then again I'm biased. (d.) C'mon, it's OK to like DD these days...plenty of males are admitting to being Duranies...I'm even getting my darling into them...it's safe now! :)

What are Starbucks? They were mentioned on Caroline in the City today too.

I wonder why the band adopted his name?

I didn't know Bjork was considered cute. There seem to be many amongst the unwashed masses / tabloid press here who consider her to be insane or something, though I didn't realise this (not being a reader of the tabloid press, or mixer with normal people) until I read her biography, which has quotes like:

"She's an idiot. My whole family hates her. She plays rubbish songs.
    She can't sing. She can't dance." -- Dean (9)
"She's stupid. Not exactly stupid but the way she goes on, it's as if
    she's abnormal." -- Janine (10)

I like the Human Behaviour video best, it's really weird, like where she's sat holding a knife and fork and a giant moth falls onto her plate, and she looks at us with an expression that says "yum yum". In fact she's produced an astonishing number of amazing videos, all very different, like the one where she dances on the back of a truck, or dismembers teddy bears in a padded cell (or something like that), or becomes an anime character. However the tracks I like best as videos aren't my favourites as music.

Already answered. Chain of coffee houses started in Seattle some number of years ago (saw the original when I first went to Seattle!). It may be a little pricey, but I like the atmosphere and besides, over here they're located next to Barnes & Nobles so I get to go browse the computer books section, the "Biography" section, and the periodicals. Yay!

According to Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, it was because they were sitting at home one evening watching the movie broadcasted on the BBC, when they both took notice of the name of the Dr. Duran Duran character. John, who was sitting with his mom, turned and asked, "Hey, do you think Duran Duran is a good name?" and she said, "No, it's absolute rubbish," to which he thought, "Yeah, THIS is a good band name...."

Simon LeBon once commented that he originally thought it sounded like an "estate agents, but now it sounds like nothing at all" (1983).

While I do realize the way I expressed it was a little too embarrasingly Quinn, I do think she is cute. She's an elfin spirit, with sparkling eyes and an ethereal innocence. Plus she dances around happily without even caring how she looks, which is a sign of feeling truly free.

There seem to be many

Those the real ages of the commentators? 9? 10? Figures. I first got to know her when I was a bit more mature, around 13 or so (when MTV's "120 Minutes" showed a Sugarcubes video). Ever since then I've smiled whenever I hear the name "Bjork" being mentioned.

Oh, "Human Behaviour" was the first solo one I saw from her. It was so cool. I liked the end especially, where she's in the bear's belly and is singing from it. And...the one where she's singing from on back of a truck is "Big Time Sensuality", which is a funky track. With "Army of Me" I at least got a chance to hear it on the radio before seeing the video, which meant I liked the track already even though I'd not seen the video yet, but over here there are few chances to hear artists like Bjork on the radio (heck, they hardly even play Duran Duran on the radio and never really have, not even 15 years ago or so) that one has to rely on videos and MTV to get a chance to hear from such type of artist.

She doesn't *have* to care how she looks, she always looks alright. If she looked really bad she wouldn't do it. I like your description of her, btw, fits very well... FWIW, whilst I'm not a Bjork fan (it's not really the sort of music I like) I like her voice. I can't think of anyone else who sings like that. Isn't there two little dots over the "o" (which would be ""...), incidentally? Or am I going even more mad...? <g>

Thanks. It's been cultivated from really liking what I've heard from her since '92 or so. Never, though, thought that my late-night musings while watching the Lewis Largent-hosted "120 Minutes" would end up being expressed outside of the self.

She has got a really cool voice, which is a big reason why I like what I've heard from her. I hate the wispy voices of a lot of female singers (Susanna Hoffs and the lead singer from Sixpence None the Richer come to mind). Bjork has a STRONG voice.

No, you're right, the "o" does have an umulat (sp?) over it. I just don't happen to have it on my keyboard so I don't type it in. Same goes for accentuation in Spanish-languaged e-mails I send out. I don't do it, purely because it isn't on the keyboard. I'm lazy like that.

It's also quite strange, original...

But if you leave the accents off and all, the words sometimes mean different things, like "si" and "s", and... I've forgotten... My Spanish teacher always tries to drum this into our heads, but I guess it only matters if you're taking an exam, I mean, everyone knows which word you mean by the context.... Never mind...

The only word I know in Spanish is curveso (sp?) and I can't remember how to spell it or pronounce it. I remember it because it's the only language in which the word for beer isn't something which at least sounds like "beer".

Actually, tell a lie, I've just realised I do know another Spanish word... I even know a Portugese one: porto, which means "port" (the drink, that is). BTW whilst I'm on the subject, I tried our local 24 hour supermarket recently and guess what? They're not allowed to sell alcohol during those extra opening hours. I turned up at about 10pm and the booze section was cordoned off. Not selling alcohol in an evening seems a bit like that UK law (if it is still a law?) that you can't sell bibles on a Sunday.

Yeah, that helps a bit, but it's also *very* confusing at times... A lot of the time, I'll remember the Spanish in French lessons, and the French in Spanish lessons... And we have French and Spanish on the same days as well, which doesn't exactly help.

It's all the listening, listening again, writing the answer, waiting for everyone else to finish writing it down, listening, listening again... that gets boring. I can't ever even remember what's on the tape afterwards, I get so bored... I guess the tape must be pretty boring as well, then.... <g>

<LOL> IIRC the teacher just said "Jason es tu *hermana*?" or something and hoped I realised the mistake, which I did... That wasn't the only stupid mistake I made, but I can't remember any other ones, that kinda sticks out in my memory... <g> I think it was mostly nervousness that made me mess up so many times there, my Spanish teacher has one of those massive fake smiles and it's very unnerving, especially when you know she can't stand you.

We had to take French from year 7 up until the end of year 9; in year 8 we had to chose Spanish or German, to take up until before year 10 again (my dad wanted me to take German, but I figured Spanish would be more useful as it's spoken in more places). Then we had to either continue both or drop one for GCSE.

We've got the questions on the paper, and there's a that's played which has the answers to the questions on it, and we have to write it down... boring.

mas,

I ended up taking two years of Latin in high-school--and doing badly with it as usual. From that I concluded that I just don't do well with languages, with the possible exceptions of Fortran, Cobol and Assembler. (I probably ought to look into C and Java but I don't bother with this stuff much anymore.) I'd hate to have to even attempt learning another natural language. I've always assumed that I simply lacked the intelligence to learn languages, and you already know what I do to English. Or it could just be the instructors. I've always found I can learn more effectively from someone who knows the subject than from someone who's very nearly as confused as I am.

Of course I guess I'm all set if I ever visit Latin America. <G> Seriously though, Latin does offer some interesting insights into English. So many interesting English words come from Latin--especially if you find yourself talking to Doctors or Lawyers. Greek makes its contributions as well, but then it's all Greek to me. <G>

I think it's interesting how the study of various languages comes into and out of fashion. At one time it was thought that we should all study Russian, since it seemed inevitable that the Russians (Soviets) were going to take over everything. Then it was argued that you ought to study Japanese since the Japanese were going to take over everything. Now people are saying you should study Spanish since, at least in the U.S., some seem to think that Spanish- speaking people are taking over everything. Depending on local demographics and the nature of your own personal bigotry you might come up with any number of languages that are "taking over." I'd guess the safest course would be to study them all. Of course considering how many Latin words that Lawyers use, maybe the best thing is to study Latin, since it's obvious that the Lawyers are "taking over."

I did wonder what lifestyle they thought we were leading when one of the phrases we learned was, "Ble mae'r sebon, fenyw?"

My multipurpose Welsh phrase (I just love the sound of it) to be used only with people who don't speak Welsh: Mae'r cig moch yn llosgi. Whisper it gently, and it's as romantic as you could wish. Accented characters don't always get through on Usenet anyway, as older news servers strip out special characters. With my last ISP, accented stuff and pound signs simply disappeared from posts, so using the umlaut would result in some people seeing "Bjrk" or "Bj rk". (This is also why people on Usenet also tend to use the cumbersome "UKP" for "UK pounds", as the "" sign isn't a standard character either and sometimes goes AWOL.)

Whatever happened to Molly Ringwald? I love all of her movies. She did a great line in ones about being an outsider like Daria, most of them more realistic and downer than the sugary teen rebel movies Winona Ryder did. Eg. compare Winona Ryder in "Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael" (where the "happy ending" is that the ragamuffin rebellious independent girl gets her man by becoming a cute conformist girl with ribbons in her hair), to Molly Ringwald in "Surviving" (where she solves her relationship problems by entering into a suicide pact).

And have you seen her in "Spacehunter - The Forbidden Zone"? One of the great SF movie flops, if you like that sort of thing.

<LOL> I don't know, it's very strange.... They put the popular ones on there because that's what sells, I guess. Popular songs are rarely the best, though. I'm currently listening to the Manic Street Preachers' "The Holy Bible", which most who own it would argue is a "Best Of..." album in itself <g>, but wasn't the album that got them in the charts.* If the Manics were to make a "Best Of..." album now, it'd probably be mostly songs off the last two albums, because that's what'd sell best. Their best song is 4st 7lb IMO, but they'd never put that on a "Best Of..." because it'd scare off most of the new fans. <g>

*Not long after its release, their guitarist disappeared (read: jumped off a bridge). One reviewer later commented in a review of THB, "If I made an album like this, and the world heard it and didn't immediately unravel as a result, jumping off a bridge would be high on my list of appropriate responses," which I think sums it up pretty well. <g>

It wouldn't have been so bad, in that example I mentioned before, if they had actually wanted to know, rather than just been worried I would spoil "their" holiday.

It's just that the little bastards are all over the house. :/ That in itself is enough to give me some kind of neurological condition that makes me feel like ants are crawling on me.
