This was very different from most episodes of Daria. It wasn't really a wry look at reality, or illuminating a problem with the typical twist. It was a straight out study of the events that shaped Jake and Helen's daughter into the girl she is today. There was a lot about her sister Daria, also.

Quinn taking the box back to the curb the second time was the first time I can remember with Quinn in a prolonged moment by herself and not putting on her front for possible observers. Mouth like a longshoreman on that girl (assuming that the cartoon euphemism equals the comic book euphemism).

The scene in the car, when they're coming back from the psychologist. 'look at me!, please, look at me!, I'm being everything you wanted out of Daria, please notice me!' Daria hasn't really thought through how much her bahavior growing up, and the concomitant focus by her parents on her, shaped Quinn.

And, of course, the box and the note at the end.

Oh, how we all miss a REALLY Quinn-centric episode...just following her around all day, hearing her inner thoughts...now THAT'D be 22 minutes I'd like to see.

Turns out she can get just as angry as her sister...and isn't afraid to express it.

I haven't heard "concomitant" since 300-level sociology classes...and you spelled it right. Bravo! :-)

Of course, the other episode we need to see is the two of them meeting for lunch somewhere in Manhattan or San Fransisco in about 20 years...hee hee hee.

I wouldn't mind seeing a series focusing on the Fashion Club.

Seriously -- I don't know if I could take 5 seasons of it, but I could enjoy a season or so of them.

They'd need a straight man, though.

I wouldn't mind it! I especially wouldn't mind it if the amount of time spent on each subject was roughly broken up as follows:

15% Fashion Club 10% Quinn & dating (like maybe her tutor) 10% Quinn & school 10% Daria & college

5% Jane's art career 5% Jane's love life 5% Trent 5% Stacy dating (Chuck?) 5% Sandy slowly maturing. 5% Daria & Quinn 5% Daria & Tom 5% Quinn's mom

3% Quinn's dad 2% The high school art teacher 2% Mr. O'Neill 2% Mr. DeMartino 2% Chuck at college 2% Tom's sister 2% That kid Daria talked to in IIFY

Now there would be a "Fashion Club" series I could sink my teeth into!

Great Idea! It could be called, "Tiffany and Friends". or maybe "Tiffany Tales". : D

Actually, I should set up a shrine to Tiffany. I just don't know when I'd have the time. Busy, busy.

A Fashion Club show would tell us more about Tiffany and Stacy, but Daria would be less prominent. She would appear only because she's Quinn's sister, and Daria's own circle of friends (like Tom and Jane) would appear very seldom and be mentioned only occasionally on the rest of the shows.

We'd find out if Tiffany was really adopted, for one thing, and whether her parents are really Jewish, which the name Blum-Denker seems to imply to me.

Some of you already know my theory about Tiffany: that her sluggish, stupid behavior is the result of diet pill addiction or some sort of chemical imbalance. If she got cured of that, she might be a more interesting character. Without a change like that, a show built around Tiffany wouldn't be particularly interesting. It would revolve around feeling superior to Tiffany. That can only last so long.

Just a few thoughts about Tiffany. I don't find Tiffany loathsome in the way I do Sandi or Mr. O'Neill.

About a show that revolves around Tiffany? No. That's why I had the "laughing face" at the end. I realize that a show about la Tiff wouldn't be very interesting in the long run, but I'd watch it. Am I serious about setting up a Tiffany shrine? Well, it's an idea I've been playing around with. I'm a moderately decent cartoonist, and if I could get the "Daria style" of art right, it might be fun.

I don't think "Ewwww" is expressive enough, frankly. There's an image more frightening than Mr. DeMartino as Mena Suvari. I doubt if the Fashion Club would *ever* recover from something like that. (Remember that Stacy was grossed out just by seeing Ms. Li's legs in "Mart of Darkness.")

Never understood it myself. Seems too difficult to carry off since many folk I see tend to look awful like that. It's a bit like that business where tight tops or "bodies" were at their height. Unless you are the exact right shape, such things are very unforgiving. The FC usually end up looking like freaks anyhooo...

But according to professional dancers, it is very "slenderising"... :)

Right. It would occasionally have a "Daria episode," in which characters like Tom and Jane and Trent got some development for exactly the same reason that Sandi and Stacy and Tiffany have gotten some development on the "Quinn episodes."

Well yeah ... but she's _really_ dull by herself. She's amusing mostly as part of the chorus of vapidity that is the FC :)

But with Daria, Tom and Jane off to college and no longer at LHS, wouldn't their roles be far less than the FC on "Daria"? It seems they'd be very occassional characters, like Amy or Rita on "Daria"

And, of course, a new series would also have new characters, and would be devoting time to developing *them*.

... when she's amusing at all :-)

I can only remember two scenes of Tiffany outside the FC: 'counseling' Daria in "It Happened One Nut" and irritating David in "Is It Fall Yet?" I thought both scenes were pretty funny. Tiffany blithely switching to the toaster after David grabbed her compact was classic.

My favorite Tiffany scene is the "tank top" discussion in "Fat Like Me":

JEFFY: You want the enemy to spot your tanks?

TIFFANY: Well, yeah, that's kind of the whole idea.

JAMIE: But what about the element of surprise?

TIFFANY: You surprise them by looking really hot.

JOEY: He's talking about war.

TIFFANY: So am I.

It also gives some insight into her personality, after a fashion. ^_^

Yes, but for that you need a straight man. Like David.

Even if we could get his voice, I like David too much to condemn him to eternal FC tutoring. :)

Well yes -- I think that Tiffany sees her aim in life as getting a man, preferably a rich, good looking man, and marrying him. So to her, sex appeal _is_ vital. And her eternal questions "Do ... I ... look ... good" and "Do ... I ... look ... fat" are thus highly relevant ones, to her.

I don't think Tiffany's actually very sexually motivated, herself. We don't see her going on and on about guys, only questioning her own beauty. Which, ironically, makes it _easier_ for her to find a rich husband -- she'd be less tempted to "put out" early thus enhancing her own desirability for a serious relationship (something that many women apparently don't grasp).

Of course, in her case, it's most definitely scheming, rather than scruples.

Eh, I doubt it. Most of the girls I've known who've been simultaionously hot and worried about whether or not they look fat are also sexually active, usually promiscuous. The instinct is to try to make the insecurity go away by being involved with a guy, and because of that insecurity, she'll do what she thinks she has to in order to keep him, usually sexual activity. Of corse, they've also been highly manipulative, as well, so perhaps Tiffany doesn't fall into this catagory.

Actually, I would like to know more about Sandi, Stacy, and Tiffany - we've never even seen Stacy or Tiffany's parents. Stacy gave a poignant clue about her home life in her scene with David in IIFY, but Tiffany's a complete mystery. (If her backstory isn't cleared up in "Is it College Yet?", I'll finish the fanfic about it that I've sketched out.) 'Daria' reminds me a little bit of the Sherlock Holmes series, in that they both drop clues about never-seen incidents - Doyle often referred to never- written cases like "The Giant Rat of Sumatra," which have been the starting point for countless neo-Holmes stories. (Hmm...Sherlock Holmes was really the first fanfic character, wasn't he?) I'd still like to know the whole story about Brittany and the lonely French exchange student. (Or about Brittany and her birth mother...)

I nominate Mr. DeMartino, since he won't have Kevin and Brittany to kick around any more. It would be a good way to expand on the last Fashion Club scene in IIFY; he *knows* Quinn's smarter than she acts.
