Reading through the messages on this board, it is clear that a lot of people like Daria because she's smart and has interesting things to say (and snappy comebacks). It is also clear that a lot of guys like smart women.

But not all guys do. A few years ago, I had the chance to talk with a mental-health counselor who told me, in all seriousness, to avoid smart women. They were trouble, he said--underdeveloped emotionally and too prone to intellectualize everything. Instead, he said, I should look for a woman who was not smart at all, or certainly less intelligent than I was. Then I (like any man) would be happy.

I thought he was a dork. Any other comments?

I suspect the counselor has trouble finding women (or men) less intelligent than himself.

Maybe Quinn was on to something when she matched Daria up with Robert ...

I think smart women are very sexy. For a while, Mary-Chapin Carpenter was one of my favorite singers..because she came across as smart and confident. Actually, there was a woman I once worked with that I developed a tremendous crush on, who was very bright. She's the only woman I ever had the hots for but never wondered what she looked like naked. Guess I was so won over by her personality that the other stuff didn't concern me. (Sadly we were of different social classes, so nothing happened. :( )

To give an idea about my personality, I'm like the non-animated version of Daria (except a bit more emotive). We share everything--biting sarcasm, intimidating intellect, even long brown hair and glasses. I also am a late bloomer in the romance department, so when I watched the Daria-Tom relationship unfold, it made me think, "Maybe I'm not so hopeless after all. If Daria did it, so can I." I also have seen a therapist for a while dealing with such issues, and he told me the truth: In high school, guys are intimidated by smart girls. When it comes to dating, bright girls usually blossom in college. Who knows--if the show continued into college, we may very well have seen Daria dating as much as Quinn (similar in frequency, not in superficiality). Considering Kevin and Brittany, it's probably for the best that Daria started dating late.

smart girls.

Some guys are. Some, who know the Holy Grail when they see it, are not.

Smart women rock. They turn the galaxy. They make life good.

This, I believe, is why "Daria" is popular. Thank God it's finally into reruns.

My wife is smarter than I am, and I can't imagine who I'd be happier with.

Let me qualify that. I probably know more stuff than my wife does - I can pull information out of thin air about a lot of different things (she can do the same, but I'm a little better at it). But it's always seemed to me that she's just plain smarter than I am, in the sense that she screws up a lot less and is generally better at keeping her life together.

I think it boils down to a few things -

1: Which would you rather have raising your kids with you, a smart woman or a stupid one?

2: Which would you rather retire with (bear in mind you'll probably be impotent by then, so you'd better have something to talk about!)

3: Wouldn't a dumb woman just plain get on your nerves after a while (these questions, incidently, apply equally to men!)

So, in the end, who's a more desirable woman, Daria or Brittany?

I think that, unless you have a complex that makes you need to feel really superior, you should marry someone who meets you on a level. Otherwise, it's going to be a very lopsided relationship, and those have a lot less staying power.
