More thoughts, observations, etc

Some random thoughts and observations and thinking out loud:

    "I Don't"-    the exact opposite of what my sister's wedding was,
and damned funny to me because of it.  This was the first time I had
seen it. If there are any Aunt Amys out there in real life, please get
in touch with me immediately.  Isn't it wild how much she resembled
Daria when she put the glasses on in the powder room?  If the series is
renewed, I hope we see more of her.  Ditto for Lerman (sp?).
    "Ill"-   I still can't get over how attractive Daria is when she's a
little rumpled in the morning.  Or maybe that's just the lecher in me,
thinking about younger girls again.  It's nice to know there's a role
model out there who doesn't have to load up with 90% of Revlon's daily
output in order to look nice.
    "Write Where It Hurts"-  This one really hit home for me.  In the
final segment, Daria looks EXACTLY like a friend of mine I've known for
years.  It's nice to know that however dysfunctional the Morgendorfers
are now,  Daria sees them turning out almost okay in the years to come.
Her cynicism hasn't terminally corroded her soul, and underneath that
cynicism is an eternal flame of optimism.  I like that.  Plus, Daria
actually laughs.  Will wonders never cease?
    Helen & Jake-  I know Helen's a lawyer, but what line of work is
Jake M supposed to be in?  Given his Type-A personality, I'd say
broadcast sales, but that's just my take on it, having known some sales-

people like him around here.
    This newsgroup-  Please, people, enough with the boooiiinngggs and
the useless offtopic flame wars and childish gibberish cluttering up the
place.  The last TV show I felt this strongly about was "Hill Street
Blues" years ago.  The "Daria" show strikes an emotional chord in some
of us which, as we get older, really means something.   It won't last
forever-  no TV show does-  so let's enjoy it while we can.
    MTV-  Hey guys, thanks for the ADVANCE NOTICE (one eye bugs out)
about the Daria marathon over the weekend.  My one chance to get all the
episodes on tape and I knew nothing about it until a friend called.
"Hey, this 'Daria' show you told me about is really cool, it's been on
for three hours now".  Me:  "WHAT?"  (Insert Jake-ian "Dammit!" here).
My newsgroup service has been squirrely of late, so my apologies if it
was posted here and I missed it.  Any word on the series renewal or next
batch of episodes?
    Anyway, that's my 7c worth (inflation) of opinion.  Please feel free
to respond or flame as you see fit.

He apparently is a *sales consultant* for whatever that's worth. "The Daria Diaries" has a series of notes Jake made about "telemarketing and how it can work for you" or some such. They are funny, and if you have ever had the misfortune to work in a phone room (no longer, thankfully) they will have you ROTFL.

and they run an airing schedule that's so good that I suspect the webkeeper there is getting her info straight from sources at MTV. Unfortunately that's your only way to get the advance notice. Unless you watch MTV obsessively (and I only do when Daria's on) there is NO WAY of finding out about these kind of things. I only found out about "Daria Day" when I accidentally stumbled upon it while channel surfing.

Again...the third season was ordered at the same time as the second season. It's coming...don't worry. Since "The Misery Chick" seemed to set up the second season, one need only look to "Write Where It Hurts" for a clue as to what direction they're going next season.

Thanks for your info in the newsgroup regarding Daria's 3rd season, among other things. One of these nights I'm gonna make it to the DALnet

chat sessions and maybe I can meet some of the folks who have
contributed to the various threads herein.  How often does that group
meet?
    The "Planet Daria" site appears to be down; I got a File 404 error
message when I attempted to bring it up.  A definite program schedule
source would be wonderful.  Sometimes I get the impression the
schedulers at MTV pick times by tossing darts at a dartboard.  Since I
work irregular hours, the VCR is for the most part my only contact with
the show.  Many times I have rewound the tape, expecting to visit
Lawndale, and found another program.  Is "Road Rules" really that
popular?
    You're not the first person to call me "Humbert", either <g>.  I
guess I just have a thing for brunettes with nice eyes and a killer
sense of humor regardless of age.  Anyway, thanks for your info and
perhaps we'll meet on DALnet.

While the artistic style used in Daria is quite simple, I still marvel at the attention to detail in some of these scenes, hair in particular. They ALWAYS show these women (Daria, Jane, Quinn) waking up with disheveled hair, just like in real life. In the rain scene in "Monster" I noticed that both Jane's and Daria's hair was wet and stringy as they sat in the back of Mr. O'Neil's car. And of course there's Quinn's "Let's just say mornings aren't her best time..." scene. For a show with major themes of atractiveness and popularity, it's interesting how they've managed to portray these characters in very a lifelike way without spending too much money on expensive rendering that doesn't really advance the story. In the spirit of giving credit where it's due, "Daria" lists a credit in the end scroll for "Mouth Direction" to Kent Holaday. I don't know if this is an industry-standard position, but it's nice to see a show that's paying attention to the details.

One thing that leapt out at me is when Trent and Jesse are playing their guitars. They actually move their hands. Not only is this not very common in other animations, this isn't very common in practically anything. Most people put their left hand on one chord and hold it there. Trent and Jesse don't.

They also show the drummer's foot moving on the high hat pedal, in time with the music. I'm impressed by the attention to all these details. So much so that I'll almost overlook the positioning of the drummer's high hat on the wrong side.

Another thing is the blushing. So far I think I've only seen Daria and her sister Quinn blush. This cartoon is rendered in simple outlines painted in in flat colors (no shading) but when one of these characters is embarrassed this little feather-edged red spot appears on the cheeks. Very simple, very effective, and it tells a great deal about what's going on without any dialog. Of course you have to be WATCHING to see that. You have to give your full attention to Daria.

You'll notice that in Daria's idealized future in "Write Where It Hurts" she wears different glasses...diamond shaped, I think. I guess this would mean that she hopes to learn to express herself more freely (which she would have to do as a newspaper columnist.)
