Hi there, I'm deena lissa and you're not. *giggle* Anyways, I'm a huge fan of "Daria" who's just stumbled onto this newsgroup; have read over 300 of the past messages and am still going to have to read ~2700 more but hey, that's fine by me. :)
I'm a 19-year-old college sophomore from Texas who's been watching "Daria" from the beginning. Rarely have I missed an episode (of course, that must make me a little bit of a sad sack, huh?). I consider my high school self to be a lot like Daria, observationalist to the nth level. Which was rather interesting considering I'm a survivor of all girls' Catholic high school (heck, a survivor of LIFETIME CATHOLIC SCHOOLING period). There wasn't much to complain about fashion-wise or male-wise, but we did have our "makeup girls" (think: larger grouping of "fashion club"-like females).
I look forward to participating in discussions here. Everyone here seems to be so nice and friendly and I am so excited about the prospect of discussing with like-minded individuals.
Oh...and did I mention I normally find it hard to get into cartoons? "Daria" and "Dr. Katz" are usually the cartoons I will watch, although I do also like "South Park" and "Dilbert". I'm a weirdo like that....

Hey, thanks to this newsgroup I now know what a "sophomore" is! It's, ... no wait, it's gone again. Isn't it a second year student? It's Latin for "wise fool" or something. I suppose I'm going to have to look it up again now.
So which is your favourite episode? I just rediscovered my Arts & Crass tape yesterday, I like the scenes in the pizza place. I've noticed that most soaps on UK tv have a lot of scenes in cafes, and they always strike me as stupid as people wouldn't spend all their time hanging out in cafes, yet on our soaps even the kids do this, I mean where do they get all their money from? IRL they'd be stood around on street corners like they do in My So-Called Life. But in Daria the eatery scenes somehow work, as you get the feeling they don't spend all their time in there, but just go when they need to hatch a plot or recover at the end of an adventure. Also of course Daria is set in America, where it's actually possible to while away the hours in a cafe without taking out a bank loan.

For me, it's a toss-up between "Esteemsters," because I moved around quite a bit when I was growing up, and I can really relate to taking all of those moronic placement tests, and I can especially relate to being ambushed by teachers on the first day as well-- especially when I got stuck in an Agribusiness class in 7th grade. Meat cutting diagrams still bring back baaad memories, and "Write Where It Hurts," because it's just such a damn good episode. (All in one sentence, too.... ;-)

We can do that here? News to me. I thought you could hang out in pubs and such all day and slowly drink your beer in the UK, but you can't get away with that over here in the US ... everyone wants quick table turnover (except, of course, the one time you're actually *in* a hurry.) About the only place I know where you can hang out indefinitely here (besides a bar) is the local Turkish Teahouse, and they don't have chairs-- just those itchy wool cushions on the floor-- uncofortable at best, and I *hate* tea, anyway. But I digress.
You obviously need to read the other 2700 posts, then. ;-) We're oftentimes a grouchy, misanthropic bunch, but usually only in regards to those not on the newsgroup. (I.e., all of the stupid people we have to deal with every day.)

Well they do refill your coffee cup for free though, which would never happen in the UK. Also the food in the cafes is cheaper in the US. As for UK pubs they vary. I guess pubs are generally ok for hanging out in during the day when they're quiet. If they're busy though some will hassle you if you're not drinking much. Also the First World War licencing rules haven't been fully repealed yet so there are still times of day (particularly on Sundays, or late evening) when you'll find the pubs are closed.
Ooops, please, forgive me, I'm but a lowly newbie who's yet to completely map out the lay of the land. I'm so used to frequent giggles, although not all of them are sweet or innocent. p.s.: My parents are both diabetic so the chances of my "rustling a sweet wrapper" are pretty much nil.
Thank you for the welcome. A "sophomore" is a "second year student", indeed. Or...wow, I thought only those of us who worked for Sr. Rose Marie in the alumni building in high school referred to sophomores as "wise fools". Amazing. (btw -- noticed you're a Brit by your ISP name so I'm impressed by your knowledge of Americanisms)
My favorite HAS to be the one where Daria first shows her feelings toward Trent and she's all sneaking around trying to not let Jane know how she feels. Or...wait...any episode with Trent and Daria in some situation because you just KNOW there's something beyond what's on the surface going on. And I love the episode where Jane becomes a huge track star, the episode where the Morgendorffers go camping while Jane and Trent attend that banal family reunion, and the episode where the high school is trying to open that coffeehouse. Those are my favorites. OK, so I have a hard time trying to make up my mind....
LOL...I kinda know what you mean, actually. My boyfriend is from England and it's a culture shock to him when he looks around and sees how inexpensive things are in the U.S. versus in the U.K. He was all abuzz when he first discovered that a Whopper over here costs 99 cents, whereas it would cost about three - four times as much in the U.K. He says he wants to stay over here permanently because of that (hee hee). Although he doesn't like Oreos, which I adore, and he's still new to eating peanut butter, which I grew up with....
Ah well...I'll be in all probability going to England in March (childhood dream come true) so I'll have to find out firsthand.
Ha ha...you're funny. I'm sorry, sometimes I can't help being sunny. Emphasis on the word "sometimes". (oooh...have "Charlotte Sometimes" by the Cure in my head...yummy *g*) I'll try to bring out the part of me that used to dominate me back in the day, my less positive self.

I haven't seen that one, I missed most of the first season. I just got the Daria video though and I notice in the second episode, "Invitation", there seems to be an allusion to Daria fancying Trent, in that Jane comments on Daria's lack of conversation in the car after Trent drove them to the party. Was she tongue-tied by a crush on him from the first moment she laid eyes on him? It looks that way.
What are Oreos?
I notice a lot of UK people seem to consider peanut butter to be a disgusting thing, rather like US people react to our Marmite (yeast extract) with horror and disbelief. However, people's reaction to peanut butter is more understandable when you consider that until a couple of years ago, most peanut butter in the UK was yucky stuff made from sugar, oil, and peanuts. Only wholefood shops sold the real stuff that's just made from peanuts and salt. It wasn't until I discovered the real thing that I developed a taste for it. I noticed in America that some shops will actually make peanut butter whilst you wait, pressing the peanuts through some sort of extrusion device.
