So here I am, rewinding the tape I had set last night to tape Daria. Or so I thought. I rewound a bit, then hit play, started rewinding more, and discovered part of an episode of Jerry Springer. I sat there, babbling, wondering what the hell happened, when my mom mentioned that she remembered that episode, from yesterday _morning_! I then realized that I had set the VCR for 9:55 AM, instead of PM. Doh!

I get Daria on DirecTV and the dish receiver can control the VCR quite nicely. The only problem arises if I forget to turn the VCR off first (so the dish can turn it on). Most of the time though I just watch and tape at the same time. That way I can hit the pause button and zap most of the commercials on the fly.

We don't have digital cable (yet, but they're upgrading the cable system to get ready for it), but the way the cable system is set up here has always been nuts. Even though I have a cable ready TV and VCR, I STILL have to have a damn converter box because I get all the movie channels.
You'd think that they'd provide a descrambler for those (they used to, back when the converter had a slider to select the channel), and only require a converter on a non-cable-ready TV or VCR (as if any of THOSE still exist outside museums), so I either 1)have to be home when something is on, or 2)can set the timer, but have to set the channel on the converter, which means I can only timeshift one channel at a time. Which sucks because I have several channels I watch/record from and the shows are all on the same days.... *sigh*

I've tried this with Daria, but MTV's commercial breaks are so long the VCR stops before the show comes back on (usually RIGHT before it comes back on; by the time I can get it restarted I've lost a little bit of the show, so I just let it run and edit 'em out later.

Well, this was mainly during the afternoon runs when I was catching the season 1 and 2 eps and there was no consistency to the commercial breaks (other than the length).
It's irrelevant now, though, since I'm not taping any more afternoon reruns due to the damn talking over the credits. At least they're not doing it on the first-run eps (yet) so I'll continue to tape those.

BTW, if you don't like the talking over the credits thing, I highly recommend sending MTV a letter via snailmail expressing your opinion politely. Well the Wed broadcasts are the ones I was referring to, but I know what you mean. My VCR decided to eat my first run recording so I ended up having to rerecord it.... At least the SUNDAY rerun didn't have the damn announcer over the credits (although the 10 spot logo was still there; didn't especially like it, but at least I can live with that)

Only marginally. Editing commercials from 'Daria' is about 1 part science, 1 part art, 1 part random luck. During the daytime commercials, usually the last thing ot play is an ad for MTV, VH1, or some other cable channel. But sometimes it's for a movie; sometimes it's something completely random. I usually end up with snips of two or three commericals that I thought might be the last one...
Incidentally, I can almost picture Daria flipping channels during an MTV commercial break:
TV: 1 - 800 - COLLECT presents, Sergeant Savings!! DARIA: And in doing so, loses another viewer. <*click*>

Digital UHF (via the aerial [antenna]) is available here, but as yet only one or two digital TVs are on the market, and AFAIK no VCRs with inbuilt digital tuners.
In my cynical way (here, on atd - gasp!), I expect that there's a cunning plan.
Stage 1. Sell early adopters a convertor box. Stage 2. Get other customers to subscribe to paid channels for a year to get a free (read, "rented") convertor box. Stage 3. Now sell digital TVs, so those with a convertor box can junk it, and those without needn't get one. Stage 4. And then sell VCRs with digital tuners, so remaining customers can access digital TV with one box using their existing TV, and the rest can record without hassle.
We seem presently to be in stage 2.
My cunning plan is to wait for stage four, then simply connect the PAL output from the digital VCR to an existing TV's SCART socket. If I can wait that long.
If I find my new posting has no analogue channel five, then I'll just have to jump on the bandwagon if I'm to continue to watch Daria.

I guess that is one advantage that the endless reruns channels have over UK terrestrial TV. Apart from last week's intrigues which saw C5 reverting to the start of season 1, each Daria episode has only been aired twice in total here, and season three episodes once. Hence missing an episode can be a major tragedy. When My So-Called Life first aired I only caught on to the series at the very end, and had to wait three years before Channel 4 showed it again, only to miss the first 5 1/2 episodes through C4 failing to advertise it! In the end a kind soul in Sweden mailed me the first six episodes, as in all likelihood MSCL will never be shown again here (certainly not by C4 anyhow). In the case of Daria my salvation has been the Daria Warehouse which allowed me to see the episodes I'd missed from the first season.
