I actually wrote some notes down when I watched this again today. But first, this friendly reminder to newbies: Please don't forget the spoiler space! . . I . h a t e . h a v i n g . t o . d o . t h i s . b u t . i t . m u st be done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I laughed a lot. Daria continues the process of growing up. The one thing I didn't really like was Daria's nightmare. Her previous dreams were better.

My highlights:

* Daria's concern about her near-accident ("I killed a dog!") and her quick return to normal ("Would you mind telling Quinn I killed it?") * The SSW promo "The Severed Pianist!" * Daria asking for Quinn's opinion: "You're asking my advice, aren't you?...I always knew this day would come and wondered how it would be. Yet, now that it has I feel strangely...serene." * the reactions of everyone to Daria's contact lenses, though I was worried they'd run the "They're for driving"/"So why are you wearing them now?" lines into the ground * Daria's showing a bit of vanity, and feeling like a hypocrite for it, but gaining comfort from Brittany! * Jane's reprise from "Pierce Me"--"Daria?...Daria?...Talking toilet?" * Brittany calling to the lensless glasses-wearing Kevin: "Oh, Mr. Ein-STEEN!" * And last but certainly not least...Aunt Amy!

Joe Helen: "Quinn! What is that thing on your arm?" Quinn: "Don't worry, Mom--it's fake." Daria: "Aww...you got a tattoo to match your personality."

I really liked this episode, although I'm partially biased because I went through the whole contacts experience in 10th and 11th grade. Although I think they did improve my looks, and they DID help with that peripheral vision, I gave them up after about a year and a half and went back to the glasses. Some days, the contacts showed no mercy and left me with festering red eyes and a runny nose...other days, they'd slip up under my eyelid (God, I hated that!), and overall, they were just more trouble than they were worth. It took 15 minutes (well, it FELT like 15) to put them in every morning...time which I could use to continue sleeping. The glasses?...well, I never timed my glasses application time, but it was worth it.

My highlights.... (Yes, folks, I'm too lazy to make my OWN spoiler space...I'll just scavenge the spoiler space of others.)

First, those eyebrows! Jane wasn't completely right about Daria's face being unexpressive in "The Invitation"...the glasses just seem to align perfectly with her eyebrows. With contacts, she's a lot more visually expressive than you could tell when she wore the specs. And of course, the theme of the episode, which was Daria learning she was a little more human than she would like to believe. I loved her practiced-sounding spiel for Jane when she first went to school in her contacts...Daria was being a "twisted little crawler", and a little more vulnerable than usual. This and "Pierce Me" make a good pair of episodes; maybe we'll see them matched up on the next "Daria Day". I would include a gratuitous Trent alert for this episode, though...if Daria had seemed any more affected by Trent's one line than usual, this wouldn't have struck me as Trent for Trent's sake. But then, maybe I'm just jealous.

Choice Lines:

Jane: "I don't blame you, why settle for vanity when you can have pure egotism?" Jane is turning out to be, perhaps, a little more down-to-earth and sure of herself than Daria, whereas originally, I thought Jane was going to be the weaker of the two. Which one's the sidekick, folks?

"Do you think contacts reveal the you-ness inside?" "I dunno. Who's Eunice?" I don't know how old Glenn Eichler is, but I'll always wonder if he had trouble not making a Carol Burnett refernce here. Probably not...but that's what came to mind when I first heard this line, and the thought will haunt me every time I watch.

O'Neill: "Kevin, I must say I'm mystified by your total inability to absorb anything from this class." Has O'Neill been palling around with DiMartino? This is pretty harsh for him...and just a couple twitches away from one of our favorite history teacher's lines.

Aunt Amy: "Well, my favorite niece!....Who is this?" I loved the line, but was especially surprised that it got past Daria completely...but then she was worried, and the episode was about Daria not being infallible, anyway.

At the doctor's:

Daria: So if anything does go wrong, it's my fault. Doctor (cheerfully): That'll be our position!

There were probably more, but I can't remember them all at the moment.

I have to admit, I enjoyed this much more than "Daria! The Musical". I wouldn't rank it in my top 5 episodes, but it's a contender for the top 10 (but I don't think there are enough episodes yet to merit a top 10).

(God,

Sounds like a good justification to me.<g> I never got contacts, or really even wanted them. That's partly because I can't stand to put stuff in my eye (even eyedrops bother me). Also I've been wearing my glasses since I was about 7, and every other member of my family wears glasses, too. I'd feel more out of place if I didn't wear them.

I was talking about females who take charge, who are leaders and aren't afraid of giving orders instead of cowering in some little corner. Sure, there are some annoyance factors to those who just bark orders all the time, but there are also annoyance factors to those who don't do a damn thing to take control of their own lives. And if they can take command of a situation, fine by me.

I didn't know there was any other kind of female. :-) They get bossy at about age 5 and they never outgrow it. Fortunately little boys learn to be oblivious at about age 5 and they never outgrow that either. All part of the balance of nature.

What's needed are people (not just female) who can take charge because they know what they're doing instead of because they just have a big mouth. There's a difference between being assertive and being just plain snotty. When you've EARNED the respect of subordinates then you don't need a big mouth. Of course if you're barking orders to people who aren't subordinates then you deserve what you get. There are plenty of less civilized individuals who have unique ways of expressing disapproval for irritating people who are continually barking orders when they have no real authority to do so. Also part of the balance of nature.

That's because Hollywood has a law:

                   Thickness of glasses
Intelligence  =  ------------------------

At least this is the correlation I have observed.

 Perceived Intelligence = K * ------------------------

K must be a constant with units of Perceived Intellegence (henceforth, P.I.). At present, I see no need to define and standardize a unit of P.I., so K has no meaningful numeric value, and is thus shown only to indicate that the relationship between P.I. and the thickness ratio is linear.

It doesn't matter what unit you choose for the thicknesses, since it cancels out. And IQ points is not a linear measure, unfortunately, so it can't be used for P.I.

Actually, I do agree with the perceived intelligence = K * (thickness of glasses/thickness of neck) formula. I mean, when I was younger (oh, about four or so) I was a bit chubby and wore these horrendous coke-bottle glasses, so naturally people perceived me to be a child genius. It was frightening, too, made even more so by the observation that I was the _only_ below-six-year-old on campus who knew how to read (and it didn't help that I was reading at 5th grade level either). Even cooler was when it was either cold and sunny or cool and rainy. Even today when I hear train tracks and it's nice and cool outside (breeze flowing through, sun lightly kissing everything), I feel a little tingle, like I'm being transported back to when I was little. *sigh*

BalgameshChris Seamans

The most common by far is David Wechsler's Adult Intelligence Scale Revised IQ test, for adults. There is also a childrens version. The Wechsler test is in two parts, verbal (vocab, etc..) and non-verbal (puzzles) scored separately. The two scores are then combined (but not simply added up) to give the overal IQ score using a lookup table. The final full-scale IQ is the most significant result of the test, but the ratio of verbal to non-verbal performance scores is also significant.

The Stanford-Binet test is an earlier IQ test, still given in some cases. The results cannot be compared to those of the Wechsler tests.

Anyhow, to press the issue, "putting in contacts is no big deal," is an awfully obnoxious comment to make. To some people it's a very big deal, both psychologically and physically. Some people have extremely sensitive eyes and contacts will never feel natural or comfortable. To make them sound like whiners is pretty rude. There are also folks with irregularities in their eyes that will simply never be able to wear contacts. It's a very big deal to them.

I'm normally not this defensive, but personally contacts are a huge problem for me, and due to a birth defect they will never be a viable option. As a result I am relegated to a lifetime of severely reduced options.

It doesn't get easier with each generation of contacts for some folks.

I'm quite happy for you that your own sight correction experiences were relatively painless. They're not that way for everyone. Keep this in mind next time that you decide to trivialize the problems that other people might have for whatever reason.

Don't worry, it's not going to happen. The Fashion Club is having an emergency meeting and they'll put a stop to it. A flame war would ruin their outfits.

Nevertheless I'm getting my Nomex underwear out of storage.

How does his use of the word "whatever" imply that Joe likes Alicia Silverstone? And what are you doing here anyway? This isn't on topic, it's not intelligent, and it's not even funny, which I surprises me because - below a certain level - stupidity can be quite amusing to observe, IMO.
