Season 3 Spoiler -- random thoughts on The Musical

I was shocked by how much I liked "Daria!" The Musical. Some things I liked: the opening theme with orchestral backup rather than the usual rock...Jane's reply to Brittany's comment about the jiggling jello: "Worried about the competition?"...I think no one acted out of character (except for the singing and dancing, of course)...the Helen/Quinn duet was rather touching. They're more alike than one would think, although their obsessions are pointing in different directions...And did you notice at the beginning of Jake's "Gah, Gah, Dammit" (which was how the closed-captioning spelled it, and how he sang it, if you listen closely) the homage to the Speed Racer cartoon?...for those who care about this stuff, Trent was seen in nothing but boxers, and later (fully dressed) hugged Daria...Kevin's X-Files "theory" as to why Ms. Li * really * canceled the game...

A couple of things I didn't like: "The Big Wet Rainstorm's Over"...and the fact that that's all it really was. For such a scary hurricane there was surprisingly little damage.

Finally, I mentioned this when I posted (very painstakingly, I might add, thank you very MUCH) a description of the "[address]" commercial, and no one commented on it. So now that the episode has aired, I'll mention it again. Perhaps you missed it in the finale, as no one has mentioned it here. This is shocking, considering that there are some MAJOR fans of this character who have posted in this newsgroup:

I think this would've worked better as an hour-long episode, myself. The storm was such a dud-- it all turned out sort of anti-climactic. This episode felt like it was in too much of a hurry. If they had had an extra thirty minutes (Well, twenty...) maybe they could've fleshed things out a bit, had a better storm, explore everyone's reactions to Daria's possible fate, etc. But the episode on the whole was enjoyable, as long as you were really willing to suspend your disbelief, and had a certain tolerance for some high-octave tones. Quite. You must remember that, besides the singing, this episode features Trent's clothes suddenly turning into a dress, Quinn's reflection talking to her, and several pictures/faxes performing duets with the characters. If anyone tries to hammer this into some kind of continutity, they've going to need a one-way ticket to the funny farm.

I disagree. I thought "The Big Wet Rainstorm" was really funny. I was upset that it was over so soon though.

Yep. Lawndale didn't suffer any more than a glancing blow. (By the way, since the writers didn't name the storm, I propose we do. Hmm... Hurricane Alli? Hurrincane Kyle? Any other nominations?) But the panic was still realistic. Earlier this year, when Hurricane Georges threatened Florida, they closed schools as far away as 350 miles from where it finally hit. And if Lawndale's farther north than Fla. (which absolutely no-one can dispute), they'd be panicked by the sheer rarity of a hurricane.

I double checked you on that one, and it's true. Could be an animation mistake, could be a little "Are you really watching?" test. Here's some other stuff you might not have noticed:

During Quinn/Helen's haunting "I Can't Leave Yet," as Helen faxes and the screen rotates to show the fax, the painting above the fax machine comes to life to play background music.

After the equally haunting "They Must Be Worried," a bit of debris flies across the screen with a Milk ad on it. Homage to the fan-created "Got Milk" parody ads found at Outpost Daria?

A couple of other thoughts:

1) Notice how Sandi jumps in front of Quinn in the finale (just before the final long-distance group shot)?

2) The other Lawndale football players looked awfully old for high school students...does that mean Kevin's going to be there for awhile? And another thing...in "The Invitation" Kevin tells the three J's about Brittany's party and says they're all invited because they're on the team (and Mack says something like "It's on page 3 of the playbook")--so why weren't they in uniform at the pep rally as well?

The cow scene was directly stolen from the Bruce Sterling opus "Heavy Weather." In fact, the entire plot was stolen directly from that book.

I am surprised no one has mentioned this already, but the cow sign that blows by is an obvious parody of the movie "Twister" which achieved some notoriety due to a scene where a cow is seen being blown through the air, as I recall, from right to left, just like in "Daria!" "We've got cows!" was probably the best line from the whole rather silly picture. It's an appropriate spoof since "Daria!" is, after all, our first "disaster episode" (not counting fanfics).

I was thinking (or maybe just hoping) that they were just in the eye of the hurricane, but that turned out not to be the case. My guess is that the situation was typical of storm warnings: that warning goes out over a large area and gets a bunch of people worried, but most of them just get rained on.
